America’s increasingly diverse audiences prefer diverse content in streaming film releases. The Hollywood Diversity Report 2024, Part 2: Streaming is out now. Some highlights (and lowlights) from UCLA's research • Women made up the majority of viewers for nine of the top 10 streaming films of 2023, while households of color were also overrepresented as viewers for nine of the top 10. • Among creators, women and people of color still find more opportunities in streaming than in theatrical productions but continue to face limited resources as white male directors helm the few high-budget projects. • Women reached proportionate representation as leads in films but were most likely to star in films with smaller budgets and continue to lag in terms of overall cast. • People of color remain underrepresented behind the camera, though they reached proportionate representation in terms of total cast on screen and their largest share of film leads for the first time in the report series https://lnkd.in/eyXNcznv

The world now has an abundance of tools to help us cut corners. What previously required mindful discussion, skill, time, and attention can now be created instantly with the click of a button for a fraction of the cost. When corners are cut and these "easy-button" works are published for public consumption with little human oversight, we put society, public knowledge, and potentially our history at risk. We stand at a dangerous precipice. We need regulations on a system-wide basis and a clear understanding of disclosure requirements. There need to be rules and penalties when AI use is not disclosed properly. In the same way the food industry is regulated to tell you exactly what is in what you are buying, there should be consistent labels and language across all products. Our knowledge should be treated with the same amount of care as our health. Our 6th piece of research on Business and Racial Justice in the U.S was released this week. I and our teams have been committed to this critical research for the last five years. Despite the current ongoing debate, discourse and division, the work of racial justice and DEI must continue. Regardless of the rhetoric and the attacks, the data shows that there is increasing desire for the work across communities, and the benefit from it to employees and consumers. 🏔 Paramount Global is officially merging with the production company Skydance. On its first investor call following news of the merger, the company unveiled a new logo as part of a presentation to investors. It reads more like the launch of a private equity firm than an entertainment company. The new logo uses Paramount’s legacy mountain motif and circle of stars, but replaces the media company’s script wordmark with a new serif version that gently arcs with a curved line underneath. It’s set in what appears to be the same font and arrangement as the Skydance logo. The traditional all-caps serif and thin strokes, when paired with its royal blue background, creates a wordmark resembling those in corporate consulting and investing, like McKinsey or Citadel, rather than other entertainment companies and streaming services, which largely use script or sans serif type. This coming week, after six years of building an incredible Brand + Creative team, growing the agency and the ATL office, supporting hundreds of nonprofit clients, winning 80+ awards, and making some dear lifelong friends, I'll be saying "until next time" to my Media Cause crew, and heading on to a new adventure as the Managing Director of the Health Action Alliance (HAA). I'm carrying a lot of mixed emotions with all of this – gratitude, excitement, confidence, nervousness, sadness, nostalgia, inspiration, curiosity, anticipation – because well, transitions are hard and complicated, no matter how right you know they are. The last six years have been a wonderful and challenging journey, and I've grown in so many ways. Like one of the lyrics from The Tortured Poets Dept album says: "there wouldn't be this, if there hadn't been you." When I join HAA in a few weeks (yes, I'm taking some time off to decompress in-between, and for anyone who is able, I would advocate for you to make that a requirement for yourself, too), it'll be my first time not having "creative" attached to my title. And, it'll be the first time I'm not leading teams in an agency environment. But, change can be beautiful. I'm following my passion for workplace mental health, organizational leadership, team building, and in a way, entrepreneurship, as HAA is still young, and I'll be diving-in to help shape its vision and scale the incredible work they're already doing. So while it feels like a big shift in some respects, I think it's actually more of an organic evolution. Everything I've learned and experienced throughout my 20+ year career so far has led me here. And while this week may mark the end of one chapter, I wouldn't be able to write the next one without it. Cheers to more amazing things to come. 🥂

News podcasting may be doing relatively well but this report is a chilling summation of the state of the news industry around the world. First, although Meta claims news is not important to them it is the the #1 platform for news worldwide. How’s that going to work out for everybody? “Active news avoiders” are on the rise worldwide. Tik Tok is a major source of news everywhere, especially among younger people, and it is growing astronomically. So - to be clear. X is run by Elon. Tik Tok by the Chinese. And Meta by a group of managers who say they don’t care about news content. That’s the global public square. News “influencers” are on the rise, as are groups that know the algorithms reward controversy and rage. #news #society #platforms

Like most FAST services, such as Paramount’s Pluto TV, The Roku Channel, Xumo and smart TV OEM platforms Samsung TV Plus, Vizio WatchFree+ and others, Tubi offers a mix of live linear-style streaming channels as well as on-demand content. Murdoch on Wednesday’s earnings call said that across content available on the platform, 90% of viewing happens in the on-demand environment. “This is very important because when the viewing comes on-demand and it’s proactively on-demand, as opposed to passively sort of sitting back and watching a FAST channel, that’s much more valuable to advertisers,” Other FASTs are leaning into on-demand as well. Samsung TV Plus, for example, initially focused more on linear FAST channels but during this year’s NewFronts presentation said it plans to double the amount of VOD content available, after having already done so last year. “money will continue to flow from linear entertain television, particularly cable entertainment networks, into streaming” including AVOD, SVOD, and ad-supported SVODs, Murdoch said. “That trend… will not slow" #FAST #AVOD #streaming #on-demand #content #TV

Life in the FAST lane at Future Ops / AdMonsters #OpsNY with Addy Atienza and Rashaun Hall. TMB (Trusted Media Brands) is part of Fuse Media's Culture Collective, which features Black, Latino, LGBTQ, and other focused FAST channels. TMB brings everything from Fail Army programs to Family Handyman. There’s no Nielsen for FAST! No single source of truth for what is successful… But you can definitely tell from the platform (OEMs) what is NOT working. Samsung, LG, and Vizio are the big three, but you can make good revenue off of smaller players like Fubo. The platforms have a lot of power/control—you have to keep them as informed as possible. Good chance they will start acquiring many content channels. They’re also building their own content—FAST channels are running into “Hey, we’re not going to market your stuff cuz we have something just like it." They also want exclusive content, like Samsung with Conan O’Brien. Cross-channel PMPs is the next big frontier—blending audiences across the Culture Collective. But interesting—60% of the inventory right now is sold direct.

In the last couple weeks, we’ve been hearing directly from journalists about what makes them tick – first from a Meet the Media event by State House News Service, then from 1:1’s with professionals like talented senior CNN producer Ashley Davis, then from new research by Muck Rack on the 2024 State of Journalism, and much more. Some of these points may not align with what you already have in mind about how PR – or more importantly, how journalism – works. But if you’re thinking about PR for your brand, or even your career, here’s six things YOU NEED TO KNOW, direct from the people doing the writing: 🪓 More than 30% of journalists have reported layoffs or buyouts at their organizations in the last year, leading to smaller newsrooms with fewer writers. ⏰ Almost 25% of journalists publish 11 stories or more each week, and 34% are working after hours most days of that week. They are BUSY. Give them TIME. Speaking of time: embargoed pitches are intriguing, and exclusives extra so – but they have to arrive 1-2 weeks before the news is actually live to be considered. 📊 Journalists need sources that can think and speak beyond the scope of their own news. That means data, studies and connections to bigger issues. And customers are often more interesting or helpful than a spokesperson. 🗣 No customer? Subject matter experts first, researchers second, and CEOs as a distant third are journalists’ most preferred sources for stories and commentary. 📳 Pitches need to be kept short (less than 200 words), simple and personalized. Think about what they can read on their phone screen WITHOUT scrolling. And if it doesn’t tie to their beat, or demonstrate a real knowledge of the broader industry, or only contains promotional information, it ain’t getting read. 🤝 Relationship building is what convinces journalists that you're a resource, not a one-off. For every interaction that produces a story, there should be many more than simply reinforce your interest in their work and relevance to their beat. In brief: treat them like people. Busy, busy people. Address them as individuals, don’t make them fight for the information they need to write their stories, and build a PR strategy that works in months or years – not days.
