What are the most effective ways to follow up on a proposal and get feedback for business development?
Of course, open-ended questions are ideal. How you frame the open-ended question is everything. Making open-ended questions about the customer/prospect is critical. i.e. "What happens if you don't make any changes and leave things the way they are today?" Labeling is important too. i.e. "Seems like there's no need to make changes" or "Sounds like you have it covered" or "Sounds like you're at risk of losing $X millions in revenue. How are you going to make sure that doesn't happen?" If you jump the gun and ask, "How does our solution help you?" they'll smell your commission breath and run for the hills. It's not about you.

Multiple channels are important if you send proposals and quotes without an initial review meeting with the customer. The review meeting is when you lock in a follow-up date and time to learn more about their decision. If you leave the review meeting without a follow-up meeting scheduled, you're chasing a decision you may never get, no matter how many channels you're working. If anything, you should always connect with the customer/prospect on social media (for me, it's LinkedIn), and you should be sharing educational insights that relate to your value prop with the hope that your customer/prospect sees it. Do it consistently enough, and they will. Do it well enough, and they'll come back to buy without you chasing them.

For enterprise-level deals, it's crucial to conduct a quote/proposal review meeting with the customer before sending the proposal. This meeting provides an opportunity to jointly review the details and pricing, allowing for immediate feedback. Such collaboration not only ensures clarity and confidence for the customer but also enables agreement on any required revisions upfront. Additionally, this approach facilitates a clearer understanding of the customer's next steps and helps set a concrete follow-up date to discuss their decision. If a customer declines a proposal review meeting and says, "Just send me the proposal," it may indicate a lack of serious interest in the project.
