I'm so grateful for Cardinal Health's investment in me and my colleagues through Mental Health First Aid and QPR (Question, Persuade, Respond) training. So when I saw this Harvard Business Review article, I knew I needed to read through it. Christina and Jeffrey start the article by asking if you would address a colleague when you noticed they were stressed. As they share, "dealing thoughtfully with employees' negative emotions is a critical yet difficult leadership skill." In order for employees to feel comfortable and even safe enough to bring 100% of themselves to work, they are naturally going to have days when they are at their best and others when they are struggling. The article first shared three common misconceptions: 1. Discussing emotions at work is unprofessional. 2. Getting involved in personal matters is too perilous. 3. People who share their emotions want you to solve their problems. It shares a great framework to help a leader determine how best to respond to an employee's emotion. Using empathic wording to acknowledge is such a powerful first step which then allows for a next-step response that best fits the situation. It comes to end by sharing ways we can best build our skills and how critical it is to be self aware: ** Identify our default behavior. ** Pay attention to others' and our own reactions. ** Expand your repertoire. I'm still a work of progress in this area, and have to work so hard to keep my questions simple, to avoid over-inserting myself into a situation, and to minimize the amount of times I share my own stories to relate to someone's emotion. The team leads by example, creating a safe environment, fostering diverse networks, providing training, setting inclusive goals, empowering diverse voices, promoting cross-cultural competence, actively listening,and seeking feedback. We know when we celebrate our diversity, it helps us to live out our purpose to care for people to be their best. Diversity enhances creativity. It encourages the search for novel information and perspectives, leading to better decision-making and problem-solving. Striving to increase workplace diversity is not an empty slogan — it is a good business decision. A 2015 McKinsey report on 366 public companies found that those in the top quartile for ethnic and racial diversity in management were 35% more likely to have financial returns above their industry mean, and those in the top quartile for gender diversity were 15% more likely to have returns above the industry mean. In a global analysis of 2,400 companies conducted by Credit Suisse, organizations with at least one female board member yielded higher return on equity and higher net income growth than those that did not have any women on the board. In recent years a body of research has revealed another, more nuanced benefit of workplace diversity: nonhomogenous teams are simply smarter.
