Ed Jones, Ph.D.
Behavior is comparable to disease in driving distress, illness, and dysfunction in primary care patients. Behavioral clinicians have solutions, but few are employed in the setting. We need to rectify this and prioritize behavior change in primary care. Countless patients need behavioral interventions, and clinicians today are making an impact in brief (20-minute) visits. Dysfunctional behavior exacerbates chronic diseases like diabetes and depression. For example, patients often fail to take helpful medications for many reasons. Dysfunctional behavior ranges in complexity and magnitude, impacting physical and emotional health. Behavior merits attention as a unique clinical domain, not just for contributing to many disease processes. Traditional solutions are inadequate. More behavioral training will not help PCPs succeed, and models like Collaborative Care cannot scale to meet the need. If behavior is as fundamental as disease in determining health and illness, we must reconfigure primary care and make behavior specialists routinely available. Over time, behavioral clinicians will be viewed as co-leaders of primary care teams, not simply adjunctive staff. Their accountability for the ubiquitous domain of behavior makes them essential clinical partners to PCPs. Each domain’s importance is undiminished by the other. EDRD Pro
We look forward to welcoming Annie Goldsmith, RD, LDN (she/her) on Tuesday, May 21st, from 10 am to 11 am PDT to present Working with Clients Who Have Dissociative Identity Disorder: What EDRDs Need to Know! Although the prevalence of eating disorders and disordered eating is high amongst patients with a diagnosis of Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID), training for working with these clients is not provided within standard ED education. Compounding this issue is that DID is a covert disorder, often taking a client 7 to 10 years within mental health treatment systems before the condition is identified and diagnosed. This means it is likely that many ED clinicians are working with DID clients without knowing it and aren’t sure what to do when a diagnosed DID client comes to us for ED care. All of this has huge implications for treatment outcomes. In this presentation, Annie Goldsmith will share considerations for dietitians working with complex trauma survivors, including those with a diagnosis of DID. Today, less than 20% of mental health providers practice measurement-based care. Yet it has the potential to foster a treatment experience that is highly intentional, collaborative, and transparent, and serves providers, patients and insurers equitably. I had the honor of penning a blog post on how we can unlock the potential of measurement-based care in mental health. 📈🧠 Dive in to learn about the importance of measuring outcomes and how it can transform mental health care for the better. Read the full blog post here ➡️ https://lnkd.in/gJHzBU3V #MentalHealth #MeasurementBasedCare #DataDriven #HealthcareInnovation #Mindfulness #Headspace UPDATE: Updating this post to share the original JAMA Psychiatry source link for the stat on MBC utilization, which I realize was omitted. https://lnkd.in/g8J2BCeM). I also want to acknowledge the importance of utilizing both idiographic as well as nomothetic assessments to ensure our approach to measurement based care is collaborative, culturally responsive, and personalized. I’m grateful for the discussion around how we can use assessments to consistently and intentionally ensure our treatment plans are effective – and so we can demonstrate the value of the care that is being delivered.

Adverse childhood experience, or “ACEs,” are potentially traumatic events that occur during childhood (from 0 to 17 years old). These experiences can have long-lasting impacts on health, well-being, and life opportunities. Although ACEs are common (1 in 6 adults have reported four or more types), there are ways you can help balance out their effects. Check out the image below to learn how you can support the children in your life. #allinswva #MentalHealthAwarenessMonth #mentalhealth

Evaluating the Cost-Effectiveness of Medication Therapy Management Across Racial Lines A study examined Medication Therapy Management (MTM) services among older adults, specifically Medicare beneficiaries, to assess its cost-effectiveness and performance across racial and ethnic groups. The study found that MTM had a net benefit for all racial and ethnic groups, but did not reduce racial disparities in medication utilization. Additional strategies are needed to target and reduce these disparities. Long-term studies are necessary to understand MTM's impact on healthcare disparities. MTM is valuable for managing medication but further research is needed on its effectiveness in addressing racial and ethnic disparities. Exploring Therapy: A Journey through Different Approaches Therapy isn't one-size-fits-all. Just as each individual is unique, so too are the approaches to healing and growth. Let's take a brief journey through some different therapy modalities, each offering its own perspective and tools for navigating life's challenges. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): This approach focuses on identifying and challenging negative thought patterns and behaviors. By changing the way we think and behave, CBT helps individuals develop healthier coping strategies and achieve positive outcomes. Psychodynamic Therapy: Rooted in the idea that past experiences shape present behavior, psychodynamic therapy delves into unconscious thoughts and emotions. Through exploration and insight, clients gain a deeper understanding of themselves and their relationships. Mindfulness-Based Therapy: Mindfulness-based approaches, such as Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) or Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), incorporate mindfulness practices to cultivate present-moment awareness and acceptance. These techniques can be particularly effective for managing stress, anxiety, and depression. Family Systems Therapy: Family systems therapy views individuals within the context of their family dynamics and relationships. By exploring patterns of interaction and communication, this approach seeks to promote understanding and harmony within the family unit. Art Therapy: Incorporating creative expression into the therapeutic process, art therapy allows individuals to explore and communicate thoughts and emotions that may be difficult to express verbally. Through art-making, clients can gain insight, process trauma, and foster self-discovery. These are just a few examples of the diverse range of therapy approaches available. Whether you're seeking support for anxiety, depression, trauma, or relationship issues, there's a therapy modality that can meet your unique needs and preferences. The key is finding the approach that resonates with you and empowers you on your journey toward healing and growth. Learn more at: www.thepresentc.com Call us at: (630) 625-8454

Beyond Clinical Walls: New Approaches in Mental Health Care Mental health services often fail marginalized communities, highlighting the need for inclusive care models. Peer support and community health worker programs are effective but underutilized in clinical settings. Combining community wisdom and evidence-based practices can enhance mental health support and preventive care. Reflecting on her journey, a child psychiatrist shared her personal and professional experiences, emphasizing the importance of community in mental health care. She recognized early signs of anxiety and depression in herself, which were managed through therapy and medication. However, the traditional medical model, with its long-term therapy requirements and medication focus, often falls short. To bridge these gaps, she advocates for integrating community-based programs into mental health services. Peer-to-peer support, credible messengers, and community health workers have proven effective but need wider implementation. By leveraging community strengths and clinical expertise, we can create more accessible and supportive mental health systems, particularly for those traditionally excluded from care. https://lnkd.in/gMMy3zrJ #MentalHealth #CommunityCare #InclusiveHealth #PeerSupport #HealthEquity #PreventiveCare #MentalWellness #MentalHealthAwareness #SupportSystems #Psychiatry #CommunityHealth

Honestly as a LCSW (clinical) I love the fact that this NASW board has created a license geared toward those social workers who are non clinical nor want to do therapy. Many of us do a multiple of things on macro and mezzo levels and have no desire to do micro practice. Here are my concerns: 1. A potential issue I see down the road is social workers in this state seeking federal employment is not going to get the same advantages because they don’t have a clinical license even though it’s LISW. Since the clinical license in this state is an LICSW. 2. Second the SWkers who take the non clinical route probably won’t be able to apply for endorsement in different states because they again do not have a clinical license. 3. Another issue is we as employers and hiring managers are going to have to be very deligent in knowing the difference between licenses and what they entail to ensure individuals are not inappropriately indentifying themselves especially across states. 4. I’m also curious for the SWkers in this state who chose the non clinical route will they have to redo their supervision hours if down the road they want to start seeing clients and bill insurances. Just my thoughts what do you think!
