Rakuten Symphony is so appreciative to AT&T for being included in its network simplification transformation program. Thank you to all the AT&T executives who have given us this chance to be part of an industry-changing program. Mike Dano's article captures so many aspects of what is required to be successful in an undertaking like this. It starts with the fundamentals of using different words to describe what is being done. "I think the word 'cell site' goes away," AT&T's Todd Zeiler said. "I think this pivots to a world of CU, DU, RU. Servers and access points." Before we built mobile networks. Today we start building distributed data center operations where the primary user is a mobile network. We see so many parallels between how AT&T is approaching this and how Rakuten Symphony already approached it. The hope is we can discover an industry blueprint that can make sense for the whole of telecom to be able to follow and accelerate the change to being a truly software-driven cloud-native operation. From Mike Dano's below article when describing the vendors involved "One is Japan's Rakuten Symphony. According to The Mobile Network, AT&T counts roughly 7,000 users of Rakuten Symphony's Site Manager software within its own and its contractor construction teams. The software automates parts of AT&T's site deployment processes." 🌍 A once-crowded field of small, midsize and nationwide cellphone carriers is now split among Verizon, T-Mobile and AT&T, leaving few players left to take over. As one of the last pieces left on the board, U.S. Cellular has long been an attractive takeover target. 🌍Creating a regional operator against three major operators and continue to make it profitable hasnt worked out well for US Cellular that is actively looking for a potenital buyer. 🌍It was expected that larger operators would stay away from it citing the history of such mergers and possible government reaction to block them. 🌍However now it seems that T-Mobile and Verizon are both potentially in talks with US Cellular to create a sitauion which satisfy the divestment requirement and at the same time helps them claim valuable assets to further extend their 5G ambitions. 🌍U.S. Cellular offers wireless service to more than four million mostly rural customers across 30 states from Oregon to North Carolina and covers almost 51 million customers. 🌍US cellular has spectrum licenses in one third of all Cellular market areas (CMAs), with holdings than span the 600MHz, 700MHz, Cellular, PCS, AWS, CBRS, 3.45GHz, C-Band, 24GHz, 28GHz, 37GHz and 39GHz bands. Will T-Mobile become an open fiber operator? As of February 2024 T Mobile was offering fiber fixed Internet in 13 markets in the states of Florida, Colorado, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, California, and New York by partnering with fiber providers Tillman FiberCo, Intrepid Fiber Networks, SiFi Networks, and Pilot Fiber. Last week, T-Mobile has announced a new fiber broadband initiative called "Lumos" that aims to reach 3.5 million homes with fiber by 2028. This fiber network buildout is part of T-Mobile's broader strategy to expand its broadband offerings beyond its existing 5G wireless network. The Lumos fiber network will be built and operated by Lumos Networks, a subsidiary of T-Mobile, and will focus on both urban and rural areas. T-Mobile plans to leverage Lumos' existing fiber infrastructure as well as build new fiber assets to reach the 3.5 million home target over the next 5 years, in a similar fashion to AT&T's Gigapower, with the help of the private equity EQT. Fiber passings are an important metric when gauging the opportunity a broadband provider has. But if you’re trying to look at the HEALTH of a BSP, you need to look at actual subscribers and penetration rate. That + opportunity will drive valuation. One of the coolest components to my line of work is seeing how quickly technology evolves. It's been six months since I took over as GM of Point Broadband Hagerstown. The Broadband Catalysts team has been hard at work building new ways to evaluate high-cost areas in regards to broadband deployment. Too often we are seeing communities choose to direct funds to densely populated areas and leaving the high-cost areas out of their initial builds. This is problematic for a number of reasons, not the least of which is the lack of a viable business case for a provider to serve just the high-cost areas. We recommend pairing high-cost areas with enough higher density areas in order to build a sustainable business cases to serve everyone. We love wireline service, but wireless internet is also a critical component of an overall connectivity strategy, and if we just fund the areas where the wireline providers can make a business case, we are inherently making it even more difficult to serve to rural and low-density areas. No provider, wireline or wireless, can afford to lose money every month. We've reached the point where the economics of broadband are critical to spending grant funds effectively. We need better tools to identify and evaluate areas that represent comprehensive coverage combined with sustainable business cases, and we are committed to building these solutions.
