About
Above all, I am passionate about creating a sustainable and equitable planet for present and future generations.
With a bachelors in Environmental Studies and a Masters in Geography, I have training in topics related to environmental science, sustainability, environmental geography, human geography, climate change impacts, mixed-methods research, and applied research. I have taught at multiple universities both in in-person and online mediums. I have taught labs, large lectures, and small discussion courses.
In addition to teaching, I have various research experiences in topics related to wildlife conflicts, climate change adaptation and mitigation, ecotourism, and most recently impact-based forecasting and risk communication with the Weather Ready Nations Project at the Hydrologic Research Center. While the nuances and subject matter vary, in all of these experiences I have utilized mixed-methods and understanding perceptions of stakeholder groups. I am generally interested in understanding how people perceive challenges related to the environment. In understanding people, I hope to be involved in more sustainable decision making efforts for the future. Furthermore, I am drawn to applied research environments that work in tangent with applied solutions.

Climate change adaptation through agroforestry: opportunities and gaps
Current Opinions in Environmental Sustainability
This review highlights the current state of knowledge about the socioeconomic and biophysical role of agroforestry for climate change adaptation, identifies three knowledge gaps, and discusses the role of agroforestry in adaptation policy processes. Recent scholarship has focused on biophysical modeling of agroforestry’s ability to buffer crops from climate extremes, and farmer perspectives of biophysical benefits. Socioeconomic scholarship examines how agroforestry increases adaptive capacity,…
Socioeconomic scholarship examines how agroforestry increases adaptive capacity, reduces vulnerability, and thus helps farmers reduce climate risk. However, we identify three knowledge gaps: (1) uneven geographic distribution of research, (2) understanding benefits during specific climate hazards, and (3) lack of integrated biophysical–socioeconomic research. Last, we discuss agroforestry’s emergence in the global climate change agenda, as evidenced in recent Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change reports and United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change processes.

Mitigation and Adaptation to Climate Change in San Diego County, California
Mitigation and Adaptation Strategies for Global Change
The latest IPCC report states that it is unequivocally clear that human actions are the most prominent cause of present day global warming and climate change. While alarming, this news has mobilized nations, cities, and communities across the world to engage in an array of mitigation and adaptation activities. The latest IPCC report states that it is unequivocally clear that human actions are the most prominent cause of present day global warming and climate change. While alarming, this news has mobilized nations, cities, and communities across the world to engage in an array of mitigation and adaptation activities. Our research focuses on San Diego County, CA, USA, to answer two major questions regarding mitigation and adaptation measures being taken in the region: (1) What climate change mitigation and adaptation activities have taken place, are underway, and are planned for the future in San Diego County? (2) How successful and effective have these activities been at meeting their objectives to mitigate climate change or adapt to the impacts of climate change? Through a mixed-methods online survey, we gathered responses from 28 climate change experts throughout San Diego County to ensure a cross-sectoral perspective of the actions being taken. Results document 39 different mitigation and/or adaptation activities taking place in San Diego County. Notably, the majority of activities were reported to be effective at meeting their mitigation and/or adaptation objectives and to be of high priority. However, the effectiveness of projects was not uniform across sectors, and respondents also highlighted challenges and areas for improvement. Based on our results, we provide three key recommendations: (1) improve communication and coordination across sectors, (2) ensure that adaptation activities are also a priority alongside mitigation, and (3) include environmental and climate justice issues in mitigation and adaptation activities.
