An Inspiring Week in Sacramento: ASCE and APWA Legislative Fly-In Last week, Sacramento buzzed with energy and purpose as nearly half of our participants at the ASCE and APWA annual legislative fly-in were new to the process. Together, we formed a united front to educate our elected officials on the importance of ensuring IIJA funds reach local governments and to protect previously selected projects from budget reallocation. Our message was clear: infrastructure is the backbone of our communities. We advocated fiercely to secure the necessary support and to emphasize that these funds should not be a quick fix for budget deficits but a long-term investment in our future. Key Moments: - **New Voices in Advocacy:** Nearly half of the participants were first-timers, bringing fresh perspectives and enthusiasm. - **Unified Message:** Advocated for IIJA funds to bolster local projects and opposed the reallocation of these vital resources. - **Impactful Conversations:** Shared our vision for a stronger infrastructure and the tangible benefits it brings to our communities. The Road Ahead: Imagine a future where our efforts have secured the IIJA funds for local governments, leading to safer roads, stronger bridges, and more reliable public utilities. Ok, this is for all the #Surveyors and #CivilEngineers out there. GenAI is eating these professions now too, I see. Need to estimate the size of a large room or building? No problemo. Take some hig-res video of said large room or building. Preferably 4K, if you can. The camera on your phone should work just fine. Upload the video to ChatGPT 4o. Engineer a simple prompt like: "Can you please estimate the length width and height of this room. The doors are 80 inches tall." I've learned from trial an error to give the LLM that reference dimension. This task takes a little extra work. The LLM asks a few questions, in order to pick the frames from the video correctly, to make sure the whole room is covered. Then it measures the room. Then it gives an estimate of its accuracy. Far out! I wonder what use for LLM's we will think of next? Hard to predict the future on this technology. This thing is learning at a geometric rate. While we are on the #Terminator2 reference, Does anyone else see the parallel b/w NVIDIA's new #Blackwell chip and the T800 Neural Net CPU chip invented by Miles Bennett Dyson in the movie #Terminator2? The #Blackwell chips feels like that huge (fictional) step forward. That's why trillions are being invested in it, and NVIDIA is the most valuable company in the world. AI datacenters are popping up everywhere, it seems. Is it NVIDIA? Or Cyberdyne Systems? The lines b/w reality and science fiction continue to blur. Or maybe converge? Here is another argument for High-Speed Rail (HSR) in California (CA). According to this article, California leads the nation in the number of fatalities associated with trains. What does High-Speed Rail have to do with all of this? These fatalities were at at-grade crossings. California High-Speed Rail through the Central Valley would operate at 220 mph, and all at-grade crossings would be eliminated. High-Speed Rail Systems in Japan and France have been operating for decades without a passenger fatality.
