“When I worked at L’Oréal USA, I reported to Kat Peeler, VP SoftSheen.Carson from 2004 to 2008. Kat’s mission was to develop the first US-based global marketing team post-acquisition in order to create its innovation funnel and accelerate the rate of new product launches. Merging an outside brand into a reputed multi-national corporation while keeping its unique flair is a robust challenge and Kat crafted her team with care, garnering a diverse group of skills from both outside the company and within. Kat was my first boss to practice situational leadership. As a neophyte developer, many aspects of the job were foreign to me initially. During this time, Kat provided structured direction on next steps to help me focus on the tasks at hand. As I became more experienced, she became less directive and more supportive, giving me latitude to test new ideas and make mistakes. When I became a subject matter expert, I felt fully empowered to bring forth new proposals and run my projects. Her always-open door still allowed me to sound her for advice if needed. I always walked away from our discussions with more clarity. A true people developer, Kat paid as much attention to building a robust innovation funnel as she did to developing her team despite the inconvenience it may have posed, for example, by enrolling all her direct reports in the same week-long training. The skills we gained during the training made us more persuasive leaders individually and strengthened the “esprit de corps” among us. It also enabled us to be our respective accountability coaches in Senior Management Meetings from that moment forward. Kat is curious, determined, resilient and positive. She is an excellent communicator – both verbally and in writing. As her direct report, this was particularly important during performance reviews. Her feedback was always specific, measured, illustrated and benevolent. This made it simple to establish a roadmap for change when needed. Finally, the trait I most appreciated about Kat was her commitment to empowerment. During budget cuts for example, she would always communicate the global amount to be cut. But she let her direct reports determine how to make those cuts, which was a powerful way to give control back where it had been rescinded. Over the four years of our collaboration, I developed a deep respect and appreciation for Kat. And while I was sad she left, it was very revealing and inspiring that L’Oréal promoted her to another strategic, higher visibility role. ”
