Dr. Naiem Issa and I are excited to share our newly published article in JAAD addressing deficiencies in the 2024 acne vulgaris treatment guidelines. We provide compelling evidence for why clascoterone and sarecycline should have strong recommendations in the guidelines. Moreover, we demonstrate that the wholesale acquisition cost (WAC) for these branded medicines is comparable to other branded acne medicines, not outliers as the guidelines would suggest. We hope that the dermatology community will reconsider the excellent utility of clascoterone and sarecycline in addressing the major unmet needs in acne treatment that remain since the publication of the AAD 2024 acne guidelines. https://lnkd.in/ekZaqkxP

Excerpt from PD03-02: #QS11 is a small molecule #ARFGAP1 inhibitor and activator of #Wnt/ß-catenin signaling pathway, sourced from Tocris Bioscience, promoting #prostate smooth muscle contraction. These interesting data may help to explain our findings regarding immunomodulatory imde drugs (IMiDs), presented at this year‘s #EAU24 in #Paris. #IMiDs interfere with the Wnt/ß-catenin signaling pathway, blocking contractile mechanisms in the lower urinary tract. This discovery of potential novel mechanisms of smooth muscle contraction provide the basis for bench to bedside #translational solutions for the #treatment and #care of #LUTS #BPH and #OAB by introducing novel #pharmaceutical options in the #future! 👍🏽 Congrats to my colleague Khaled Aldahmani, and his co-authors Mohamed Suliman, Khadija Hafidh, Salem Beshyah on their recent publication in the Journal of Diabetes and Endocrine Practice. https://lnkd.in/dgFH8Guw 📔 The researchers conducted an extensive review of the current literature regarding the epidemiology, complications, and quality of care, as well the challenges of diabetes management and future directions in clinical practice and research. 🇦🇪 Key findings: 👉🏽 The International Diabetes Federations estimates the prevalence of diabetes in the UAE at 12.3% for the 20 to 79 age group (age-adjusted 16.4%). Other prevalence studies reported diabetes rates between 19 - 25%, depending on the population and age studied. 👉🏽 Many research studies in the UAE found a relatively high prevalence of undiagnosed diabetes before the survey. This number (25-40%) has remained remarkably consistent over many, many years. For example, one study amongst Emirati students (17-25 years) found a prevalence of 24% prediabetes and 9% diabetic.  👉🏽 The UAE has been an early adopter of CGM technologies. Glucose monitoring devices are available to most patients with diabetes in both public and private health care facilities. Several groups have published their CGM experience in different patient populations and clinical settings. 👉🏽 UAE research productivity related to diabetes has increased dramatically: from less than 50 research publications in 2013 to over 300 publications in 2023.

So many great people are dedicated to eradicating cancer, across so many industries. To make real progress, it’s going to take our collective talents, creativity, and a willingness to think outside the box (occasionally). 2.1 million cancer patients will be diagnosed here this year, and they don’t have time for politics, nihilism, or small thinking. It’s too late to save Daniel Flora MD, PharmD, or Dave Flora’s mom, Same for David Penberthy and Scott Penberthy. We must do better. My call to action as so many of us are thinking about moms lost: take a step today to get involved, and do what you can to help us get there. That means ACTIVELY supporting more advocacy, research, screening and prevention, anywhere you can. Solid progress is being made, but so much left to do. Fighting cancer is a team sport. This is so so so important. As healthcare professionals we really haven't begun to deal with healthcare-acquired PTSD even though we see it in our patients every day, especially patients of color (and I'll add even more specifically Black patients) especially queer and trans patients, especially patients whose BMI we've decided isn't appropriate/healthy. If someone hasn't come in for a care in a while, it's almost never them, it's almost always us. Patients aren't born with fear of getting medical care, they develop that with our help. It isn't always individual medical providers, it's often the system, but we can make it better by taking individual justice oriented steps to make our own practice more inclusive. We can! Good healthcare for LGBT people means better healthcare for everyone.

📢 New Research Alert! 📊 🔬 Title: “Illness-Related Fatigue and Its Association with Quality of Life Among People with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease: A Cross-Sectional Survey from Jordan” Authors: Angham Badarneh, Enas A Assaf, Suhair Al-Ghabeesh, Ahmad Rajeh Saifan, Nabeel Al-Yateem, Aram Halimi. 📖 Abstract: In our recent study published in Nursing Practice Today, we investigated the prevalence of illness-related fatigue in individuals with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in Jordan. Fatigue is a commonly reported issue among COPD patients, yet it is often overlooked or inadequately addressed. Our study aimed to assess the impact of fatigue on their quality of life (QOL). 🔍 Methods: We employed a cross-sectional correlational design, recruiting 200 participants from four hospitals in Jordan between April and May 2021. Participants completed Arabic versions of the self-administered Fatigue Severity Scale and the WHOQOL questionnaire. 📊 Results: The study revealed a high level of fatigue among COPD individuals, with an overall mean fatigue score of 5.07±0.62. Notably, heightened fatigue levels were associated with disease-related disability and interference with daily responsibilities. The overall mean QOL score was low (2.665±0.39), with the physical domain displaying the lowest mean score (2.6±0.47). Fatigue and QOL were significantly and negatively correlated. 💡 Conclusion: COPD patients in Jordan experience substantial levels of fatigue, which significantly impacts their quality of life. Unfortunately, fatigue often goes unnoticed in healthcare services. Addressing fatigue should be a crucial aspect of treatment plans for these individuals. Especially during pandemics or service disruptions, additional attention is needed to effectively manage fatigue among COPD patients. A study just published by the journal of the American Cancer Society reveals startling numbers. Nearly half (44%) of all cancer related deaths in those over age 30 were linked to preventable causes. Tobacco use led the pack, with 28.5% of these deaths being attributed to it. Alcohol use, physical inactivity and diet were also significant contributors. And not forgetting the role of untreated infections like Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C and HIV among others.
