“Kara is an amazing director and person! She can really do it all! She is one of the smartest people I know and still so down to earth. She cares about every single person on her team and does individual one on ones with everyone to help make sure we are all aligned with each others and the business needs. She takes the time to personally get to know everyone on her team and establish a strong professional bond. I haven’t had a lot of leaders at her level do that. And to me that’s everything. She is transparent and professional. Very approachable and adaptable! Really one of the best out there in my opinion. Purple is so lucky to have her! And our team will continue to adapt and get better because of her! We love you Kara!”

What are the best strategies for creating a new hire training program?
Have realistic expectations. People aren’t going to leave new hire training knowing everything they’ll ever need to know to do the job. Identify what they really need to know to get started and focus on that. Then provide comprehensive resources on what to do/who to ask when they don’t know what to do.

How can you develop your HR skills outside of work?
Hot take: Don’t develop your HR skills outside of work. HR can be really taxing work and not disconnecting when you’re done for the day is a recipe for burnout. You should do what you can (and your employer should do what they can) to have space to develop your HR skills during your work day.

How can you develop your facilitation skills for diverse audiences?
In Bossypants, Tina Fey explains how the first rule of improv made her a better leader. I would argue it also makes a better facilitator. Being able to read the room, adapt to the situation, build off the comments and engagement of others, saying, “yes, and…” can go a long way to make a workshop or training or session so much more impactful.

My old team!!! I *loved* working on this team. If covid hadn’t turned our life upside down, I’d still be there. 20/10 do recommend.
