They’re a place to find support, a welcoming and safe environment, and help navigating tools you might not even know exist, no matter your needs. May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and it’s a great time to remember that while libraries can’t provide mental health services, they can be a valuable resource for accessing those services and beyond. Whether you’re in Philadelphia or elsewhere, your local library likely has connections to support groups, financial aid, and other programs — and a librarian may be able to guide you toward the best way to access them. As we navigate the complexities of education post-pandemic, the challenges within special education have come sharply into focus. This recent article from The 74 exemplifies a critical issue: Washington state schools missed identifying 8,500 children for special education referrals during the COVID-19 disruptions. This staggering number underscores a systemic problem. The pandemic exacerbated existing disparities and strains within our educational systems, particularly affecting vulnerable populations like students needing special education services. School districts can make strides in response to increasing demand by optimizing their central workflows and finding newer ways to recruit teachers and other staff. I really like this idea of creating an “assessment culture.” Students and teachers should feel comfortable collaborating on the process of monitoring learning, evaluating progress, and agreeing on actionable instructional goals. This would help create a feeling of agency over one’s learning (and teaching) and help develop the important growth mindset. An assessment culture would help integrate the critical information that formative and summative tests can provide in a more explicit and positive way. School accountability works best when it’s shaped by authentic input from the people it’s meant to serve. But states and school districts don’t often use a good process when they try to engage their communities.
