During the 4-hour, comprehensive training session, focused on media relations, external and internal communications during breaking news and high-profile incidents. Stressed importance of managing social media during a crisis and digital marketing to promote police departments. Relying on journalism experience, subjected the police executives to hold mock news conferences then provided immediate feedback on their recorded performances. Of the 49 participant evaluations, 47 rated the training session a 5 out of 5.

Invited to give two presentations at this annual social media conference: one on crisis communications during an ambush attack on one of our police stations in March of 2016 that led to the friendly fire death of an undercover officer. The second presentation focused on the Prince George's County Police Department's use of Nextdoor to poll our citizens about safety and to better engage with our community.

It's very rare for our police department to allow a journalist to embed with a homicide detective. It's even more rare when it's a sports journalist who wants to focus on the homicide detective who's the quarterback for the national champions DC Divas football team. The result was worth the effort.

Appeared before the Fairfax County Ad Hoc Police Practices Review Commission - Communications Subcommittee to discuss the PGPD's Media Relations Division's external communications strategy regarding officer-involved shootings. Shared best practices regarding media relations and social media engagement and monitoring.

Speaker at the FBI National Executive Institute's Session XXXVIII at the Newseum in Washington, DC. Followed former White House Press Secretary for President George Bush. Joined the CIA and others to address a statewide group of Virginia law enforcement officers and public information officers about the Prince George's County Police Department's use of social media to engage the traditional media in the Washington, DC, news market as well as the community we serve.

Presented about social media engagement to police chiefs and commanders from around Maryland at the 2014 Maryland Municipal League Police Executive Association Training Conference.

Served on a panel on the topic "The Formula of Messaging." Addressed law enforcement chiefs, commanders and public information specialists on how to leverage relationships with the media into favorable coverage for their departments.

Addressed Johns Hopkins University's Crisis Mitigation, Management and Communications graduate-level class. Focused on media relations, crisis communications and social media as it relates to law enforcement and other public safety agencies.

Addressed an audience of transportation police chiefs and other leaders at a WMATA (Washington Metropolitian Area Transit Authority) conference on best practices for getting out your department's story to the traditional news media and through social media. Discussed the critical role of media relations, using social media during a crisis, messaging and the challenges of correcting inaccurate information about your department or agency.

Represented the PGPD on a four-person panel on the topic "How Social Media is Changing Crisis Response." Approximately 14,000 law enforcement professionals in attendance for this annual conference.

Represented the PGPD on a four-person panel discussing "PIOs and Media in a New Era" at the NCR Social Media in Emergencies Summit in Northern Virginia.

Used my experience as a former broadcast journalist and current PGPD position to advise approximately 60 police chiefs of jurisdictions with a population between 50,000 and 500,000 on media relations.
