How do you train and prepare your spokespersons and experts for media interviews and appearances?
Media coverage can become contagious once people in an organization get recognized for good work. When I served as Media Relations Director for the Prince George’s County (MD) Police Department, we would post the links of positive media hits featuring members of our department to our social media platforms. We’d then take the strong positive reactions we got there and share that and the media link with the entire agency via email. We seemed to get more and more volunteers to participate in media opportunities after that practice became routine. Winning with your external and internal audiences is always something to celebrate!

These simple steps can exponentially help your officers and your community members, to include keeping people safe. It's very rare for our police department to allow a journalist to embed with a homicide detective. It's even more rare when it's a sports journalist who wants to focus on the homicide detective who's the quarterback for the national champions DC Divas football team. The result was worth the effort.
