“Jack is an excellent addition to any team. I have had the opportunity to work with him directly on projects here at DVS in partnership with Tech for Troops. He is a wealth of knowledge, and shares openly to better serve the mission at hand. Jack possesses an ability to build relationships and connectivity that is extremely efficient and purposeful. Jack and I worked hand in hand with our statewide initiative to put technology in the hands of our military veteran students to assist them in their academic endeavors, a first-in-the-nation initiative here at DVS. He is passionate a his purpose and cause, has the skills to develop others, and his work has been far-reaching and impactful for our military communities.”

Here's how you can turn failure into a career advantage.
Having been through and successfully completed military boot camp in the US Marine Corps and the US Coast Guard I can tell you failure is built into the process in order to build resilience and grit. You are made to believe it is nearly impossible to complete an exercise in order to teach that there are ways to adapt and overcome all failures, and also to learn to focus and continue to refine your focus on finding a solution no matter what, because failure is not an option. This is in the extreme of course but the fact that grit in the face of failure separates those who persist and persevere, from those who fold and quit. Of course there are times when you meed to cut bait, but most times all it takes is one more try. So don’t quit!

How can you develop empathy for people from diverse backgrounds?
Finding common ground is key to successfully building empathy with someone, as empathy is seen as being driven out of concern and a place of genuine respect of other’s feelings and values. This allows you to assuage fear, fear being one of the strongest drivers of persuasion. So being able to focus on commonality in a situation, and having the driving force being positive and not allowing negativity to be as pervasive, your chances of connecting and understanding are much higher. Lead with that and you will find your audience feels that you are genuinely on common ground, and a footing of real positive influence in my opinion.

One of my favorite causes. Started my first Toys for Tots Christmas volunteer duty at Lynhaven Mall in uniform for US Marine Corps 4th AAV at Little Creek. Both my sons continued the tradition with Air Force JROTC and Navy JROTC. Will continue until I can’t.
