Growing up, I always struggled with organization and prioritization, challenges I later understood were linked to my ADHD. This all changed when I met my husband, my then-boyfriend when I was 20. His innate ability to plan, manage, and organize has genuinely been his superpower, transforming his life and mine! Flashback to 2000, a dream job opportunity in technology at one of the Big Four accounting firms presented itself to me. With my accounting background and passion for technology, I was thrilled yet overwhelmed at the opportunity to interview with them. My emotions ranged from excitement to sheer panic as I confronted my weaknesses head-on, particularly my struggle with working memory—an essential aspect of executive functioning. When I felt lost among a sea of technical books, unsure of what to focus on, my husband offered a simple yet effective strategy: prioritize with a highlighter. "You don't need to memorize everything," he advised, "just focus on the most important points and speak confidently about what you know from your heart." ❤️✨ This approach transformed my preparation, and I walked into the interview fueled only by my passion for technology and software development. The outcome? I landed the job, marking one of the happiest days of my life as I conquered my panic through the art of organized thought, a skill I had learned from my husband - that’s right, it’s a learned skill, that I wasn’t born with. Since then, I've honed this skill to support my personal and professional life, embracing clutter where it doesn't interfere and focusing on organization on what truly matters. Despite the exciting career path that lay before me, I prioritized raising a family, which led me to decline the job offer that involved traveling and settling for a local position. While I learned the art of organization from my husband, I'm sure he equally values the times I've encouraged him to stray from conventional paths, explore new directions, and embrace unconventional thinking 😄 Can we all collaborate by not competing with one another but instead drawing on our natural abilities, showing up for each other fearlessly, and supporting one another with our innate gifts and talents? In Soul Therapy: The Art and Craft of Caring Conversations, psychotherapist Thomas Moore observes, “The main tool in therapy is the person of the therapist. You have to boldly enter the emotional field of a troubled person or a conflicted couple and use everything you have to hep them sort out their lives. Ideas and techniques help, but they are for the most part, in the background. The therapist has to use himself, at some risk, to care for the others suffering. If anyone needs care of his own soul, it is a therapist”. Isn’t this true of leadership? In the abstract, leadership is simple. Build revenue. Grow brand. Protect margin. Control costs. Keep some cash on hand. Focus on strategic capabilities. Yet, no matter how capital-intensive our business, everything we do is mediated through people, relationships, language and our understanding. That all depends on the leader. We forget in leading teams and organisations, it is our very person, us, who we are, that must do the leading. The biopsychosocial approach isn’t just about looking at your client as a whole person--- It’s also about being able to hold space for your clients and communicate effectively with them. It’s about getting them to take charge of their situation and remove the burden clinician’s put on themselves of feeling like they have to “fix” people. It’s about helping clients to learn for themselves and not fully directing them in what you think or believe as a clinician. Do you carry the burden of feeling like you have to “fix” your clients? As I was looking for Brene Brown's video on empathy vs. sympathy to send to a client, I happily discovered that there was another animated short that was done of her talking about blame. She ties blame to empathy and how it affects accountability. Why was I looking for a video on empathy? My client is a leader at a construction industry company, who has had a LONG tenure there, and is someone that his peers come to when things go wrong. What also happens is he then gets in the pit with people and finds himself getting frustrated with the situation, with people and had the perspective that a situation that went awry was a huge failure even though in the end, they found a solution and it got handled with success. He also has a tendency to dive in and fix things for people when even his Leader is suggesting that it will be important for him to transform this behavior. He suffers from the belief that "If I don't do it, no one else will." Do you suffer from that too? It's a common trap for many Managers/Leaders. There can be situations where you might be the only person that can do it. Although most often I would gather there is someone else who can. More about that another time...
