Embracing Diversity and Inclusion: The Episcopal School Perspective Imana Sherrill| May 1, 2024 At the heart of the Episcopal approach to education is a commitment to teaching history accurately and creating a sense of belonging for all students. This means acknowledging and learning from the past, even when it is uncomfortable, and actively working to create a more inclusive future. By embracing DEI principles, Episcopal schools strive to create learning environments where every student feels valued and supported. https://lnkd.in/eKetzuT2

Is there a teacher shortage? Or is there a lack of access to teachers? I believe it’s a mix. If so, what’s a possible solution? At GEO Academies, we believe a solution (not the only solution) is partnership. Specifically, we partner with higher ed institutions to provide our students access to high quality teachers. To be sure, we could try to recruit and hire our own teachers to meet the needs of our students, but that would simply be robbing another school of that teacher and leaving those students behind. Is that a proper solution? I don’t think so. Of course, we do compete for high quality teachers and we will continue to do so. But in certain circumstances, it makes better sense to partner up. And we do. Like I said, this is not the only solution to providing students access to high quality teachers, but it’s a good one to consider.

Math for America graduate Brian Lewis from founding Pathways in Technology Early College High School teacher in 2011 to appointed Assistant Principal August 2024 MDRC October 2023 P-TECH 9-14 Pathways to Success Implementation, Impact, and Cost Findings from the New York City P-TECH 9-14 Schools Evaluation New findings in this report indicate that the P-TECH model increased students' postsecondary degree completion, particularly for male students, and boosted internship and dual enrollment rates, even during the pandemic. "By the end of the first year of postsecondary education, 2.6 percent of female and 1.8 percent of male P-TECH 9-14 students had earned degrees, compared with virtually no students from the comparison group, of either gender. These impacts for both genders are statistically significant". "Male students who had the chance to attend P-TECH 9-14 schools were more likely to attain college degrees than male students assigned to other kinds of schools". https://lnkd.in/e54rSYKT #weareptech #skillsbuild #skillsfirst #skills2030 PTECH Brooklyn HS Alumni Network NYC Department of Education The City University of New York City Tech, CUNY IBM IBM iX The State University of New York New York State Education Department www.ptech.org

Career pathways benefit all students! “ A Fordham Institute synthesis of this growing body of research identifies five benefits that come from participating in CTE programs: (1) they are not a path away from college, since students taking these courses are just as likely as peers to attend college; (2) they increase graduation rates; (3) they improve college outcomes, especially for women and disadvantaged students; (4) they boost students’ incomes; and (5) they enhance other skills like perseverance and self-efficacy.” #CareerTechnicalEducation #CTEPathways

One way to strengthen math instruction: "giving teachers a voice in their professional development." That's what we're all about at Rekindle Education. Our teachers need the autonomy and flexibility to schedule coaching time that meets their individual K-9 math needs. And it's working. 98% of our teachers who were surveyed agreed that they could take what they learned in math coaching and apply that learning in their classroom. Teachers are professionals. Giving teachers a say in their continued learning is a must. #mathteachersdeservemore

Chatting with Bena Kallick and Heidi Hayes Jacobs about anchor resources or programs schools use to provide consistency and ease for teaching staff. The downside of anchor resources is that they limits teacher agency — the ability to make choices in curriculum and instructional design based on student interests, needs, and talents. When working with a school using an anchor resource or program, my goal is to treat this as a "yes … and.." rather than an "either/or." Your curriculum and instruction can be consistent, coherent, and compelling. We clarified a few questions to launch conversations for curriculum design: -- What is the expectation on how it should be used across the school/system? For example, has it been integrated into curriculum design? Is it the basis of weekly PLCs? -- If it has been in play, to what extent is it being used? -- To what extent are the resources both timely and connected to your students? -- To what extent is the outlined resource or program pace viable for teachers and students? What other questions would you add to the list? #curriculumdesign #education #curriculum

IS YOUR SCHOOL WORTH MILLIONS? (YES, even if your school is a non-profit!) Curious about what your school is worth? I came up with this valuation tool that can shed light on your school's potential value and it’s totally free. When you fill out some simple information about your school, you’ll instantly find out what it could possibly sell for. I recall a client reaching out to me, expressing her readiness to retire and wanting my help with the transition. Unaware that she could sell her non-profit multicampus Montessori school, she was anxious to explore her options. I assured her that I could promptly provide an estimate of her school's value and assist her in the selling process. After providing a few financial details, she was astounded by the potential value at which she could sell her school. The school ultimately sold for millions, and I was so excited to have played a role in facilitating the successful sale of her school. She is now happily retired! Even if you're not ready to sell yet, our assessment tool can help strengthen your school for the future. Did you know that hundreds of schools close their doors for good each year because they don’t know that they can sell? You could be one of the hundreds that are sold each year, with many selling for millions of dollars. Click the link below and fill out the form, and if you have any questions on how to prepare your school for the future let me know. https://bit.ly/3T53Vxf #SchoolValuation #Education #RetirementPlans #NonProfitSchools

“Hope lives in our schools taking action on climate” Our legacy to our children depends on educational leadership on climate change now. Over 80% of American young people expect to make life decisions based on the state of the environment. From Philadelphia to California, their health and security are threatened by climate change impacts like heat, mold outbreaks, & fire. From kindergarten through higher education, climate change and sustainability must be integrated in human, local, and both fact- and story-based fashions. Administrators, university and trade school leaders, and elected officials must lead by example—not just talk, but act. Our schools must transform into bastions of health, sites where nature thrives, and renewable energy and electric fleets are the norm. Thanks to supportive measures like the bipartisan Inflation Reduction Act and initiatives like Solar for Schools, these changes are more feasible than ever. Yet, there is still more ground to cover. All together, we have to be more active and purposeful. We call on educational leaders to innovate and expand climate education programs that not only inform but also involve students in real-world problem-solving. Let’s make more. It's essential for these programs to be broadly implemented, reaching students in diverse environments, from dense urban settings to rural areas. The climate crisis requires an all-of-school response. It requires us to prepare our youth for tomorrow’s workforce and citizenry through a project of realistic, purposeful, and forward-looking empowerment. This approach will draw down emissions, prepare them for the future, and empower them to contribute positively to their local communities and beyond.
