I recently contributed a piece to HRMorning outlining the top three considerations leaders must understand to prevent bias when implementing AI technology for hiring. With the rise of AI in the staffing and recruiting industry, real concerns have emerged around AI hiring bias. Staffing and recruiting leaders have a responsibility to implement strategies that curb this unease and prevent discrimination. Are we helping or hurting? That is a question many residents of San Francisco ask ourselves in the midst of a stark and increasing equity gap. As a parent, community member, and incoming board member of the Horizons at San Francisco Friends School, I’m keenly aware of the potential learning loss our public school students in the Mission District experience in the summer months without our support. Our city is undergoing another crisis - looming budget cuts threaten vital programs like Horizons at SFFS that provide equitable learning for Mission youth. We urgently need your support to secure bridge funding and ensure our summer enrichment continues. Our scholars and families are relying on Horizons' high-quality academics and social-emotional growth.  Horizons has been successfully leveraging the months when students are out of school to stem summer learning loss for children in San Francisco for ~10 years. The program has also intentionally increased impact by supporting their scholars through their educational journey during the school year and into High School. Last year, Horizons impacted 150+ scholars with targeted small classroom instruction, confidence-building, and joyful community enrichment experiences- thanks to our dedicated summer education workforce. Networking update: At The Seattle Chamber of Commerce event RLC in Action: The Future of AI: Application in Industries I had the chance to hear from industry leaders about the relative impact of AI in their perspective fields. Summary: Vibhu Srinivasan-Director, AI/Cloud Solutions, Innovation Lead -Accenture: 60% of tasks that can be automated will be automated. This will likely cause some redundancies for entry-level positions but will increase efficiencies and relevant daily activities across all roles. Aylin Caliskan-Assistant Professor-Information School, UW: AI learns from our internet data so it learns Bias from its base information. Automatically generating statements such as "SHE is a nurse" or "HE is a doctor" which was only emphasized be the next panelist's experience. Elizabeth Wako, M.D.-President & CEO-Swedish Health Services: When she used AI to summarize her end-of-year review, including her achievement of becoming active CEO of Swedish Health Services, it assumed she was male, and input the assumptive descriptors. This is not as consequential as using AI for the recommended treatment of a patient with a certain profile, only to learn that the AI didn't account for the economic or insuranceworthiness differences, leading it to recommend a sub-par health recommendation. While this is only one of the potential risks of using AI, the healthcare industry is anticipating 203 billion dollars in savings due to efficiency. A worthwhile investment as long as we navigate the learned bias wisely. David Namura-Gov't Affairs & Public Policy-Google: David notes that the biggest risk of government intervention with AI is the chance to overreach in fields. Particularly if there may be a lack of sufficient education and knowledge in government officials surrounding AI. 15 years ago I told Ameesh Paleja, then an Amazon Sr. Manager on my team, that I could see he would surpass me. Now Ameesh is an EVP at Capital One and has clearly done so. Ameesh's successful recipe from my perspective: 1) Absolutely relentless hard work 2) Stellar ownership and delivery 3) Non-stop self-advocacy (pushing for bigger opportunities) 4) Willing to make deals to grow (I will over deliver but I want X in return) 5) Confident enough to repeatedly leave good jobs for bigger opportunities. He was never static or satisfied. On Thursday at 5 PM PST, Ameesh will be my guest for a live discussion of his career path from Computer Science undergrad through Amazon Director on to CEO of his own startup and then senior executive roles at both Google and Capital One. We'll cover each step in his career, how he saw his decisions and how I saw them as his manager for 8 years from mid-level SDE to high level Director. Ameesh has had something of a model career you can study and learn from. He switched majors from engineering to CS classic family pressure to become an engineer. Then he worked at Microsoft before coming to Amazon. After Amazon raised money, founded and built his own startup, and served as CEO at Atom Tickets. At the same time, he has had some struggles and sideways moves before ultimately becoming a VP at Google and then an EVP at Capital One. If there's one thing I want to share today, it's that SF freaking delivers. I went to a San Francisco Giants game yesterday and spent the rest of the afternoon on a sunny rooftop overlooking the ocean with Martin Spridzans discussing opportunities in ed tech, health tech, and human resources. To some, these may seem like random or boring industries. I am excited. Why? It's the things that don't change that you want to build businesses around. I mean, ask Jeff Bezos. He built Amazon - a pretty successful company - on this perspective. People will always want and need it. That's not going to change. Even if we move into the metaverse or put chips in our brains to connect to AI. It's the things that won't change that you want to build businesses around. People want to learn. To improve. To grow. To be better than others. Modern society is built to grow, even required to grow. Education is fundamental. People need to be healthy. It's the most basic human need. Something we all have to prioritize and optimize. Otherwise, we will pay the price. Sooner or later. We also discussed "one more thing" (🫢) that I see emerging from the many conversations I've had over the last few days. A problem most know. Often faced. But not really solved. Happy to share.
