  • From Waste to Value: Business Opportunities in Solid Waste Management

Many firms may be concerned about the cost of compliance with EPR rules, but innovative firms should consider the spread of such policies an opportunity to create new value, both economic and societal, and define a leadership position by developing creative solutions to waste management, and particularly plastics waste management.

In the context of so much uncertainty and change, this study sought to explore the future of innovation management and how firms can ensure their innovation management practices are ready to meet future challenges. The impetus for this study arose from the desire of the Industrial Research Institute’s (IRI) External Technology Network to understand the internal and external influences that may shape the future of innovation management. A literature review, megatrends scan, and expert interviews were used to identify key issues and design a survey that asked innovation managers about their views on the issues and trends identified. The responses were analyzed to understand how practitioners, service providers, and academics perceive the future of innovation management.

One Acre Fund (1AF) is a nonprofit organization in rural western Kenya that helps farmers lift themselves out of poverty by providing a bundle of products and services that support farmers with quality inputs, training on farming techniques, access to credit, and assistance in achieving optimal prices. Since the organization's founding nearly a decade ago, it has grown to serve over 180,000 farm families annually as of July 2014. This high level of penetration into rural Kenya, Rwanda, Burundi, and Tanzania makes 1AF a potential distribution channel for rolling out new products and technologies that could benefit farmers and their families. The organization prides itself on its innovative culture, and always strives to offer new products and methods to its farmers. In 2011 1AF realized that it needed to formalize its innovation process to ensure it was confident in new products before rolling them out across its entire farmer network. It therefore created a robust, multistep evaluation framework to assess new innovations on four criteria: impact, adoptability, simplicity, and operability.

A process for creating readily or highly dispersible nanoparticles on which chemically reactive functional groups or ligands have been placed. An ultra-high shear fluidic processor is used to change the size distribution of nanoparticle agglomerations and facilitate the formation of stable dispersions of such nanoparticles, as well as the placement of various chemically reactive functional groups or ligands on exposed surface areas of such nanoparticles. Such functionalized nanoparticle agglomerations have a broader size distribution (with a substantial increase in the proportion of smaller agglomerations), can exhibit enhanced dispersion characteristics and, when dispersed in various bulk materials, can impart to such bulk materials the desirable physical or chemical properties associated with the selected chemically active functional groups that have been attached to the surface areas of such agglomerations.

The Chicago Council on Global Affairs seeks to identify Emerging Leaders who will help Chicago compete and thrive in the global era. Each year, an independent selection committee identifies a new class of Emerging Leaders from a competitive pool of nominated candidates. The individuals selected are among the best and the brightest new leaders in the city.

Emerging leaders spend the first year of the two-year program examining key global issues that affect the world and Chicago’s global future. Experts meet with them to discuss issues such as the global economy, foreign policy, immigration, energy, and the environment. A short trip to Washington, DC, at the beginning of the second year gives them the opportunity to interact directly with policymakers. Throughout the second year, they work in small groups with Chicago Council staff to define, develop, and produce policy papers on pressing global challenges. Each group then presents their findings at a Chicago Council public event.
