As part of my commitment to my tech writing career I joined STC and extended my membership from the Silicon Valley chapter to Las Vegas after moving here. I had the distinct honor and privilege of serving as the Southern Nevada chapter president during STC's 53rd annual conference held for the first (and only) time in Las Vegas. The work and effort to support the event was arduous and intense. Many at the conference remarked that chapters many times our size would have had a difficult time providing the quality of support our small chapter delivered. I am forever grateful for how the team came together and got the job done! It was a time of tremendous personal growth. I learned the value of volunteerism and what it meant to be a servant-leader for a group of dedicated professionals. I learned what it takes and what it means to give back to an organization that has supported the profession in which I've worked for many years. This time as chapter president reinforced leadership skills in delegation, project planning, scheduling, budgeting, and communication.

I've always admired speakers who can deliver an eloquent, engaging, and entertaining message. I resolved to gain that skill. Who wouldn't want to be able to deliver a speech like Churchill, or Roosevelt, or King, or Kennedy? Or at least just to be able to stand in front of an audience without freaking out! Along the way, I had the honor of serving as a club president and an area governor. I won a few speech contests, too! The true benefit was learning and honing speaking skills and meeting…

The true benefit was learning and honing speaking skills and meeting others committed to improving their public speaking abilities at the weekly club meetings and scheduled area and district events. And I thought leading tech writers was tough. Club President, Summerlin Toasters Area D4 Governor, District 33
