⭐ ✨ ✨ Active listening in documentary production is an art form that can rival the most complex jazz compositions—each nod, "mmm-hmm," and thoughtfully raised eyebrow is a carefully timed note in the symphony of a good interview. Picture the scene: you're in a smelly, well littered and noisy environment with an interviewee who swears they have definitive proof that Junior Pope is alive and well, working at Blu Cubana. 😯  As they drone on about party jollof and cassava pancakes, your task is to look utterly fascinated. 🔥  This is where active listening shines. 🤔  You lean in, eyes wide, nodding with such vigour that your neck might need a massage later. Your strategic "wow" 😦 and "tell me more about that" are not just fillers—they're the bread and butter of making your subject feel like what they believe Junior Pope is.But it's not all smooth sailing. Imagine trying to keep your poker face while your subject shares their tenth golf anecdote, convinced it's a metaphor for the human condition. Active listening in these moments means perfecting the art of the internally screamed "Why me?" while maintaining a serene, interested exterior. You employ every trick in the book: repeating the last three words of their sentence, mirroring their body language, and occasionally throwing in a thoughtful "interesting!" even if you have no idea what’s interesting anymore. 😩  In these moments, you realise that active listening isn't just a tool for better documentaries—it's a survival skill in the wild world of storytelling, where truth is stranger than fiction and every interviewee is a legend in their own mind.

Tribal matriarchies of Western Africa (Warrior queen, polyandry) •The atavistic polytheistic transitory migrating indigenous tribes of the new world Americas; community based sharing of all including spouses & mates Vs. •European military technological advanced monotheistic societies of the Conquistadors; the individual is paramount and strict adherence to marriage vows of monogamy Commentary: remember the conquistadors gave the indigenous tribes smallpox, polio & mumps; the primitive tribes gave the Christian conquistadors a transmitted infection far far worse •Million dollar 1200 sq ft sfr with bars on windows & illegal immigrants selling fruit outside the home on the sidewalk in various Coastal Crime-addled blue states. Complete with horrific quality of life (or lack therein), horrendous traffic, bad air quality, excessive lawlessness + terminally insane overpriced real estate (LA, Oakland, Seattle, Wash DC, Portland); inverted, unhealthy & abnormal socio economic bell curve of extreme wealth & poverty Vs. $400k 4000 sq ft sfr 1 acre estate not needing a fence in Red state college towns with low to no crime, highly educated citizenry, no traffic & great air quality. Areas have low priced/affordable real estate (Madison, Ann Arbor, Norman, Iowa City); & normal healthy bell curve distribution of wealth amongst classes Commentary: Sure - San Jose, Seattle, DC & SF have highly educated residents but the real estate is roughly 4-5x more expensive. And the quality of life ( except weather) is drastically worse (sideshows, street takeovers, illegal immigrant crime, graffiti, hopelessness of the urban underclass). The violent crime & corruption in DC is horrendously untenable due to generations of AA qualifying workers; the filth & squalor of SF is infamous; the feudalistic nature of the income inequality in SJ is absurdly vulgar. The red state areas have actual neighborhoods; like minded folk who look out for one another and are welcoming, polite & friendly. This is unheard of in transitory blue state areas where no one knows their neighbor, let alone trust them, due to the chaotic exponential diversity of all shared cultural mores, with none being shared or similar in any shape form or way. In essence, aren’t citizens virtual “hostages” in their blue state homes, afraid to walk to the store due to ACAB, defund the police & other leftist anarchist violent movements, lest they be harassed & accosted by antifa street thugs or worse? “Without freedom of thought, there can be no such thing as wisdom – and no such thing as public liberty without freedom of speech.”

What do TV writers do during pre-production? Pre-production is when the writing staff gathers and begins “breaking” the stories. Generally, we use a large white board divided into 3 Acts and start figuring out the beats of the episode. This means how the story unfolds, the character dynamics, the various plotlines, etc. It can take a team of experienced writers, working full-time, a full week just to break one episode. If the story isn’t broken correctly, it’ll be obvious during later stages. The writers will pitch ideas on the beats of the episode, but ultimately, the showrunner is the person who decides. Once the episode is broken, one writer will be assigned to write the script. Usually, they’ll get one week to write an outline. Even though the story is broken, there’s a lot of details to fill in. Then they’ll get notes from writing staff and take another 2 weeks to write a first draft. If a show gets a 10 episode pick-up, the writers might get only 6 weeks of pre-production to write all those scripts. And now that budgets are getting smaller, the pre-production period is getting shorter. So how is it possible to get all that work done in time? As pre-production progresses, and new stories continue to be broken, more and more writers leave the room. One might be writing their outline, another a first draft, etc. I liken being the showrunner to the job of air traffic controller. Each script is a plane in the air, and you have to land them all safely before they run out of gas. If you spend too much time perfecting one episode, the others will drop out of the air. So it’s a constant juggling act, jumping from script to script as needed. Ideally, you’d get all the episodes written before production starts, that way the showrunner can be on set at all times, overseeing everything. But often that’s not possible, so the showrunner will send a proxy to the set. That might be the author of that particular episode, or a high ranking writer. During pre-production, the showrunner will also hire directors and department heads. They may scout locations and attend other production meetings. Days are long and hard. Production is when we shoot the episodes. For a half hour, single camera show, it usually takes 3-5 days to shoot an episode. Post-production is when we edit, add music, sound effects, color correct, etc. Pre-production is essentially the calm before the storm, and it’s critical to get as much work done as possible. Happy Sunday everyone. I saw this post by Tayo Ajimoko and as it resonates so much with me, I thought to share. If you are African and you don't speak, understand or write your language or any other African language, without mincing words or sounding too harsh, you are not doing well! But this can still be rectified if you put your mind to it. And if you happen to have children, let them know how to speak, read and write your own language or any other African one. It is not a sign of sophistication not to know how to but a Colonial and or slavery mentality! Our own beautiful languages that are so rich and with so much depth are going extinct. Before you sign up for Mandarin classes for your child, does this child speak, write and read your own language? If not let your child learn your own language first before any other 'foreign' one. Don't be rootless/ allow your children to be rootless please. Knowing your language is part of your identity, your culture and it centres you. We should be global citizens if possible but how global can you be when you are not centred in your own origins? It is always a delight to listen to Prof. Wole Soyinka speak Yoruba. This he does with no admixture of English and when he speaks English, we know how it is. He is a Nobel Laureate for English Literature after all. ATTENTION FILM INVESTORS!!!!! THE ISOMETRICS OF DECEPTION WITH INDEPENDENT FILMS From what I have been gathering is the reason the film industry is in such a shambles is that the people between the investors and the creators may not have either of the principles' best interests at heart. It seems like that the last thing the go between wants is to have the two parties actually meeting or exchanging any real information. So I have a screenplay I want to make into a film, but I need a producer or executive producer to present my project to investors. “Well, send me your pitch deck.” Why? What does a pitch deck tell you? They show a lot of moody conceptual art but really tell you nothing important AND it’s suggested that a pitch deck use as little “ink” (writing) as possible. Who are we pitching to? First graders that just want to look at pretty pictures? If I wanted to see moody artwork, I’d be investing in a comic book. It has a list of comparable films! Are the actors going to be same? No? Is it the same director? No. Are you using the same cinematographer? Still no? So what exactly are you comparing and if everything is the same, isn’t that just the same movie? There’s your cast wish list. Be careful what you wish for. If an actor knows you want them because the investors are all excited about getting them then they jack up their price and please, don’t even get into any pay or play scenarios. What if you already have an interested actor that loves the material? Here comes the go between saying “Oh I can’t sell him, but I can sell this guy for 10X the acting fee.” Why? Because he gets a percentage of the budget so if it becomes higher, he gets more money! They'll say, “It’s all about the pre-sales” which are distribution companies committing a certain amount of territories to show your film, but they want exclusivity to the rights to your film. So if another distributor comes along later with larger territories but they also want exclusivity then you kind of slapped a chastity belt on your fiancée before you’ve gone out on your first date. On top of that, no one wants to even read the screenplay. Everything in this industry is snake oil jargon to convince you to part with your money for a "guaranteed" return of which the only true term with the word guarantee in it ALWAYS has the word “minimum” in front of it. Your go between might the problem. What’s wrong with going to the source? You’ll either like what he says or you won’t. Either way, you’ll save money. I do this as a film producer if I want to sell a film. One of the mistakes I see when filmmakers approach the funds or distribution part of their film is suffering and publicly complaining about how hard it is to find the money. Of course, it will be hard if you have already decided on it. So, what I do is practice mindset every day. Having the right mindset is only a tiny part, but it is important for making the selling and money process easier. There is also a lot of strategy and planning behind it, and today, I share four practices I use to sell my films more easily. 🎥 I create the important documents: the film business plan, marketing plan, slide deck, and more. 🎥 I create a personalized database for each film I have, which includes film markets and festivals. 🎥 I talk to my contacts and offer what I have. I never send anything in advance unless they ask me to. 🎥 Attending film markets. This is where networking and transactions happen. Bonus: Post about it on social media.
