Are you struggling to hear back from job applications? It could have more to do with your resume format than it does with your qualifications. Here are 10 tips to get past the Applicant Tracking System (ATS). With some help from my friend and stellar UX designer Taylor Loredo-Payberah , here are some formatting tips to get past the ATS so your skills and experience have a chance to shine! 1) Simple Layout and Design: - Use a clean, simple layout without complex formatting, tables, or images. - Stick to standard fonts like Arial, Times New Roman, or Calibri. - Use standard section headers such as "Professional Experience," "Education," "Skills," and "Certifications." 2) File Format: - Save your resume as a Word document (.doc or .docx) or a PDF. However, some ATS systems have trouble parsing PDFs, so a Word document is often safer. 3) Standard Headings and Keywords: - Use common headings like "Work Experience" instead of creative alternatives like "My Journey." - Include keywords from the job description in your resume. These keywords should appear naturally within your experience and skills sections. 4) Contact Information: - Include your full name, phone number, email address, and LinkedIn profile URL at the top of your resume. - Avoid placing your contact information in headers or footers as some ATS systems can't read them. 5) Professional Summary: - Write a concise professional summary that includes relevant keywords and provides an overview of your qualifications and career goals. 6) Experience Section: - List your work experience in reverse chronological order (most recent first). - Include your job title, company name, location, and dates of employment. - Use bullet points to describe your responsibilities and achievements, incorporating relevant keywords. 7) Skills Section: - Create a dedicated skills section where you list both hard and soft skills relevant to the job. Include industry-specific keywords. 8) Education Section: - Include your degrees, the institutions where you earned them, and your graduation dates. - Mention any relevant coursework, honors, or certifications. 9) Consistent Formatting: - Use consistent formatting throughout your resume, including fonts, bullet points, and spacing. - Avoid special characters or symbols that might confuse the ATS. 10) No Graphics or Images: - Do not include photos, graphics, or logos, as ATS systems cannot parse these elements. This means you'll be competing with tens of thousands of applicants. Open up your options and consider smaller-sized companies. These can provide valuable experience and a great start to your career. 2. Take Every Opportunity  Don't worry too much about the pay or whether it's a big-name company. Every opportunity is a chance to gain experience. Your impactful experiences will speak louder on your profile than the company names. 3. Forge Your Own Path  Avoid following the crowd. Watching success stories on YouTube can sometimes make you feel inadequate because of survivor bias. Instead, explore your own niche within the industry you're interested in. This will help you stand out in your applications. 4. Help Others  It can be tough to focus on others when you're trying to survive and feed yourself, but helping others is equally important. When you assist others in landing their jobs, you're not just building a network of connections; you're also creating a positive impression. In the end, helping others can actually help you. It always surprises me how little the average American knows about immigration, regardless of their political stance 😁 If you work in tech, there’s a good chance that nearly half of your colleagues have been on a visa at some point. They probably were international students too. Even if they are highly sought after and their employers desperately want them to stay, immigration is often an incredibly challenging journey. It can take decades for some immigrants to finally get a green card. For most, even obtaining a work visa is literally a lottery with only about a 20% chance of success. Despite the significant number of immigrants and international students in the US, there often seems to be a lack of communities for them. I wiped out my savings trying to become a data scientist... 2017: NC State University Program: Applied Statistics and Data Management Certificate Cost: $10,000 + ❌ No success 2020: UNC Chapel Hill Program: Data Analytics Bootcamp Cost: $11,000 + ❌ No success 2021: Self-learning Program: YouTube, Udemy, Coursera Cost: < $200 ✅ Hired as a data scientist I definitely got some value out of learning through college but it was way too expensive. The truth is that companies don’t necessarily care about your certifications. They want you to have real-life, hands-on project experience. Don’t spend all your money learning theory. Get hands-on experience so you stand out to employers. P.S. What's your best tip for learning data science without going broke?

I love this article. (linked in the comments) But it's not just AI that can help... a lot of modern tech can. I struggled as a student (high school, undergrad) and had no idea why. I eventually started to figure it out and when I was a grad student in Georgia Tech's OMSCS program, an online program, having control over when/where/how I consumed the content was a game changer for me. People who know me in real life know that if I'm not actively thinking about it (like when giving a talk) I talk REALLY FAST. But from my perspective, others talk really slow! Which is a problem if I'm trying to pay attention in class... my mind can't help but wander. So being able to watch lectures at a speed that works for me, or pause when my mind is starting to wander or even wait until I'm in the right frame of mind helped sooooo much. As described in the article, AI can so similar things... and I've been using it heavily to summarize youtube videos I don't have time to watch!

International Students: if you get laid off on an H-1B visa you don't necessarily have to leave the U.S. in 60 days. You may have options. It may be possible to buy yourself some time and continue to live and job search in the U.S. beyond 60 days, for example. But for that to happen a change of immigration status will most likely be needed. For example, get a B2 visa. Buy yourself time! At any rate, review the info below (it's actually really good and it comes straight from the gov) and contact an immigration attorney as you see fit to explore your options.

Another great looking UXR job at Workday— this time with the fabulous Lexi Breitz, Ph.D. What an interesting topic. Small point, but I love how they provide different experience guidelines depending on degree. While, of course, one could debate whether the equivalencies are correct or even make sense at all, I think they are often done on the backend by hiring managers regardless of whether the are are made explicit, so I prefer to see a clear standard. #uxresearch #designresearch #userresearch #uxrjobs

Why are we building AI college counseling tools for International Students? Because any other form of counseling is far too expensive. Majority of local schools around the world don't have a "college counselor" position, which means students have to figure out the whole process themselves. However, the USA application process is EXTREMELY complicated. Even if you start Googling, you get very overwhelmed with things like "Common App", "CSS", "T20", "holistic admissions", "need-aware", etc. It's hard. Data shows that many accepted students do end up using a private counselor. On average, a counselor can take 20 students per year. To make an $80k/year salary, they have to charge 4,000 USD/student. In reality, that number is usually a lot higher. The quality of service is questionable too. Is 4,000 USD affordable for low-income international students? For many, it isn't. In order to truly level the playing field, information and counseling have to be almost free. Prospective international students, here are some useful tips. The time to prepare in NOW!

Everybody trying to change their career, whether applying to a PhD or getting into a tech company, walks the same hell. It's normal to feel lost, it's normal to feel overwhelmed, it's normal to feel tired. People selling this idea of being motivated 100% of the time by waking up at 5am, spending 30min meditating, and saying out loud 3 things you are thankful about, is just BS. Everybody has ups and downs. The solution is simple: rest and recover. People have different ways of resting and recovering, so you must find yours. Here is what works for me: I go out of my city for a weekend with my wife. I spend the first day with myself, thinking, doing a retrospective and planning, and the second day with her. The objective of rest and recover is not to stop pursuing whatever you are pursuing. It is a time to refill and come back with energy to keep trying. Here is a quote from one of my favorite books, The Miserables: "He had not yet lived long enough to have discovered that nothing is more close at hand than the impossible, and that what must be looked for is always the unforeseen."
