An important insight here. A lot of planning goes into the big events like Money20/20 with my fintech clients, and we've had to have these types of conversations with them to make sure the announcement clears the bar to be meaningful, or if they should announcement something before to build some momentum (or announce after on your own terms).

The first session, "The Leadership Outlook," featured a stellar panel discussion with industry giants: Saibal Gupta, Haresh Nayak, Dipankar Sanyal, Suresh Balakrishna, and Arijit C. One thought that resonated deeply was Mr. Shashi Sinha's observation about viewers "𝙨𝙡𝙞𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙜"through media. We consume content on multiple platforms simultaneously – watching TV while scrolling through our phones, or traversing the city while encountering billboards and radio ads. This fragmented media landscape demands a shift from mere advertising to crafting immersive experiences. The iconic brand campaigns of the past stand testament to this very notion. As someone passionate about media (having handled PR and Social Media for an award-winning campaign), I found Mr. Suresh Balakrishna's insight on the print industry particularly eye-opening. He highlighted the shift from print a "𝙨𝙪𝙣𝙨𝙚𝙩" industry losing market share to digital news a "𝙨𝙪𝙣𝙧𝙞𝙨𝙚" industry rapidly gaining traction. Interestingly, Mr. Balakrishna also noted that while there's no direct competition among newspapers, giants like Google devour 𝟴𝟬% of advertising revenue, leaving a mere 𝟮𝟬% for other digital mediums to battle over. The discussion also touched upon the evolving measurement landscape and perception that OOH campaigns are difficult to measure is being challenged by companies like Lemma, who leverage technology to ensure campaign validation. As Mr. Balakrishna aptly put it, data is like "𝙝𝙖𝙩𝙝𝙞 𝙠𝙚 𝙙𝙖𝙙𝙝" (elephant's tusk) – valuable only if used effectively or having for the sake of having it. Every organization has its own methods of evaluating campaign success, whether it's analyzing online traffic, digital footprints, or walk-ins. Haresh Nayak provided a valuable tip for DOOH enthusiasts: "𝘶𝘵𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘻𝘦 𝘨𝘦𝘰𝘧𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘎𝘰𝘰𝘨𝘭𝘦 𝘈𝘗𝘐𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘵𝘢𝘳𝘨𝘦𝘵 𝘢𝘶𝘥𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘴𝘱𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘴 𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘦. A little food for thought on Friday… It’s time to end tunnel vision on top-tier #earnedmedia hits. The reality is that your trade media and other specialized outlets translate to better results. Here’s an oversimplified example… 🗞 Let’s say you get coverage in a top-tier media outlet that reaches 3,000,000 people. But only 1% of their readership is actually interested in buying your product or service. In reality you’ve only reached 30,000 potential buyers.  🗞 Or you get coverage in a trade outlet that reaches 800,000 people who are exactly your target audience. Even if only 25% of those are interested in you, that’s reaching 200,000 potential buyers. Which one of these is contributing more to your bottom line? I’m not knocking top-tier. It’s awesome if you can get it. And if you do get it, amplify it to your followership. That coverage in the Wall Street Journal or New York Times can help build your trust and credibility, IF you get it in front of your audience. But remember... Your more niche media is your true #PR powerhouse.  #B2B

Dropped some #politicalnews last week that establishes how frequent #cannabis users plan to vote this November. The headline finding: Most of them are moveable from an electoral standpoint. This voting bloc may have the most true swing voters of any. Only 14% say they're locked in to either President Biden or the other guy. There's this huge electoral reward for endorsing legal weed, and it's going to have an impact this November. The Biden-Harris administration is embracing pro-cannabis policy. Meanwhile, cannabis presents a major disadvantage for Republican candidates. Republicans have no room to maneuver on cannabis because the GOP platform still endorses prohibition. Forbes, Marijuana Moment , HIGH TIMES, GreenState , Cultivated Media, and others gave this poll (+/-3.9%) some great exposure. It's probably the first poll that treats this demographic, which is more than 35m voting-age people, as a serious voting bloc. #2024election #polling #voting

"It's PR not ER" - I received this advice 14 years ago and it's perhaps the best career advice I have ever received (ironically it did not come from my father who is an ER surgeon - he does give great advice though). As comms and brand leaders, the job can be filled with intense deadlines, a lot of pressure to "get it right," and managing crises (real or hypothetical) on a daily basis. Through it all, having this perspective has helped me enjoy the challenges and learning to manage the curveballs rather than panic. Deep breaths. Take a second. Move ahead. Have fun! What's the best advice you've ever received?

For anyone interviewing agencies or PR people right now, ask them to tell you about favorite ideas they’ve proposed but were ultimately rejected by clients. You can learn a lot about how creative, proactive and gutsy an agency partner or person is from their best ideas that never got to see the light of day.

Did you know consumer PR is dead? Let me explain..... Back in the day, editors and journalists would scour brands for the best new products to delight readers. PR would host events, demo products, and provide journalists with detailed product sheets and photography. Those days are over. Now, it's all about affiliate programs. Because no one buys magazines and newspapers in print, and few subscribe to online publications, outlets have had to find other ways to bring in money. Enter affiliate programs. Publications only recommend products they can profit from. Consumer brands must be on an affiliate platform, which provides a revenue share to the outlet, for consideration. The higher the rev share, the higher the odds your product will be included. Some outlets will ONLY include products that offer revenue sharing, and some require that the products be sold on Amazon which doles out the biggest affiliate dollars. In my view, any publication that accepts affiliate revenue should disclose this clearly and legibly in every story and product round up. Consumers believe they are getting the best recommendation but what they are really getting is the product that gives the outlet the biggest monetary ROI. If you're a consumer brand, hoping your PR team can generate press without affiliate backing is like bringing a slingshot to a gun fight.

This is the kind of BS today’s PR companies are trying to sell their clients, claiming they do “measurement” For F*@k’s sake, y’all deserve better than this. What’s wrong with it??? It’s literally saying “good” is a PR doing the bare-minimum basics of their JOB. 👎 OMG you got a journalist to write something “positive” about you with one or more positive references and a positive headline… FFS that’s PR’s JOB!! 👎 The press got a third-party endorsement…. again, that is LITERALLY what getting PR placement with a journalist is… it’s the definition of a PR’s job. 👎 Contains a desirable visual. Ummmmm yeah, ok. A visual is certainly nice. BUT what do you really deserve from your PR agency???? Because this graphic literally only tells you things that are the absolute basic, bare-minimum job of a PR agency…. HERE’S WHAT YOU REALLY DESERVE FROM YOUR PR: 👍 A defined GOAL of how much press exposure you need every month to turn you into your industry’s thought leader. 👍 GRAPHS showing your earned exposure vs goal. 👍 Measurement of BUSINESS IMPACT of your PR program, including increased website visits, faster sales cycles, better ROI of marketing campaigns, and MOST IMPORANTLY, MORE SALES. This coming week, after six years of building an incredible Brand + Creative team, growing the agency and the ATL office, supporting hundreds of nonprofit clients, winning 80+ awards, and making some dear lifelong friends, I'll be saying "until next time" to my Media Cause crew, and heading on to a new adventure as the Managing Director of the Health Action Alliance (HAA). I'm carrying a lot of mixed emotions with all of this – gratitude, excitement, confidence, nervousness, sadness, nostalgia, inspiration, curiosity, anticipation – because well, transitions are hard and complicated, no matter how right you know they are. The last six years have been a wonderful and challenging journey, and I've grown in so many ways. Like one of the lyrics from The Tortured Poets Dept album says: "there wouldn't be this, if there hadn't been you." When I join HAA in a few weeks (yes, I'm taking some time off to decompress in-between, and for anyone who is able, I would advocate for you to make that a requirement for yourself, too), it'll be my first time not having "creative" attached to my title. And, it'll be the first time I'm not leading teams in an agency environment. But, change can be beautiful. I'm following my passion for workplace mental health, organizational leadership, team building, and in a way, entrepreneurship, as HAA is still young, and I'll be diving-in to help shape its vision and scale the incredible work they're already doing. So while it feels like a big shift in some respects, I think it's actually more of an organic evolution. Everything I've learned and experienced throughout my 20+ year career so far has led me here. And while this week may mark the end of one chapter, I wouldn't be able to write the next one without it. Cheers to more amazing things to come. 🥂
