Before You Hire a Social Media Manager ... get right! To set yourself up for success when hiring a social media manager, you actually need to do some prep work. Otherwise your SMM doesn't sound like you and you wasted your money. And don't we all want social to have an ROI? I recommend getting this in place: ✔️Clear Branding and Messaging: Ensure that your brand identity and messaging are well-defined, as your social media manager will need to communicate effectively on your behalf. ✔️Brand Voice Guide: Offer guidance on your brand’s tone, style, and language to ensure that your social media manager accurately represents your brand.  ✔️Content Assets: Provide your social media manager with access to branded content assets, such as logos, images, and videos, to maintain consistency across your social channels. ✔️Approval Process: Establish a clear approval process for social media content to ensure that it aligns with your brand voice and objectives. And.... ✔️Offers, lead magnets and ways to make money. Otherwise, what's the point of endless audience building! Oh, I just had to reshare this one. We're not filling intern or entry-level positions. We're a diverse, ever-evolving group of professionals from various backgrounds and degrees. We wear many hats, bridge gaps between disciplines, and bring a love of good storytelling to the digital sphere along with us. We optimize, research, plan, and pivot with the newest trends, features and algorithm changes the social media gods decide to throw at us next. We come from different educational backgrounds and adapt to new processes and ways of thinking: If we're not analytical, we learn to be. If we're not creative, we learn to be. If we're not writers, we learn to be. And when we're not posting for your brand, we're planning, reporting, creating or collaborating on assets that tells your brand story. Not every client or company sees the heavy lifting or gets to peak behind the curtain, but when you get the right professionals behind your brand, you'll see the results. The biggest mistake newer social media managers make when starting a new role... Jumping into brand accounts too soon. Put the passwords down. Here are 10 things you should be doing before logging in to the brand accounts: ➡️ Schedule a call with product ➡️ Review social media analytics ➡️ Schedule a call with your supervisor ➡️ Review any brand strategy documents ➡️ Analyze brand accounts in incognito mode ➡️ Review any recent and upcoming brand collabs ➡️ Review any business goals or product roadmaps ➡️ Review any recent and upcoming product launches ➡️ Review audience analysis (for both brand and social accounts) ➡️ Understand social media operations (post approvals, QA processes, etc.) Your skills are not just about your ability to execute. If you're a social media manager, your biggest battle isn't with trolls or people who don't get our jobs or even business suite... it's burnout. I know way too many social media and digital folks who burned out. Who were creative powerhouses that changed the industry, and then called it quits because they lost their spark. You need to protect yourself from burnout, but that's easier said than done. Here's some of the things I do: 1. Recognize burnout. For me, it's when I start hating social media and struggle to be creative. 2. Talk to your boss about it. Burnout occurs when the demands of your job outweigh the resources. See if there are ways you can reduce the burdens or increase the resources. Look to see if there's a task or two that could shift, or maybe a platform you could step away from. 3. Take vacations and don't do social media while you're on them. I remove all social media apps from my phone and fully check out from work. 4. Consider not doing social media in your free time. I recognize a lot of us have side hustles on social and also just enjoy scrolling. But doing more social media isn't going to fix the burnout. Set time limits on your personal scrolling. What isn’t seen are… - Countless hours of community management - Customer 1:1’s - Script writing - Brainstorming - Ensuring everything is perfect up to pressing record - Days of editing - Copywriting And the list goes on.
