Let's face it....beauty is in it for the long run!!!!! Beauty brands have a massive opportunity in off-price retail, with strategies differing among leading retailers. While some, like Tanger Outlets Midway and Nordstrom Rack, are adding full-price beauty products to attract new shoppers, others, like TJMaxx and MARSHALLS LLC, stick to offering discounts of 30 to 70% off MSRP. TJX, with its expansive footprint of over 4,900 stores across nine countries, has seen a 3% increase in net sales, reaching $49.9 billion in fiscal 2023. Ross Stores, Inc., with its 1,700 locations, also provides competition, focusing on moderately-priced selections. These discount department stores offer space for beauty brands to offload excess inventory and boost liquidity, with straightforward contracts and no additional charges for in-store placement or marketing. With the 8.1% sales decline accelerating over the last quarter and with losses growing on the bottom line, JCPenney has started its new fiscal year on a sour note. Unfortunately, the market has been soft which has not helped revenue, but as it is only part way through its reinvention program JC Penney also isn’t firmly on the front foot. Lower credit income is also unhelpful, with revenues here down by 20.5 over last year.   The changes JCP has been making to some stores and to assortments seem to be delivering, with refurbished shops performing better and some categories like womenswear producing stronger numbers. Sadly, these things are not yet sufficiently developed or widespread enough to offset staleness in the balance of the business. Basically, there is still a lot of work to do to put JCP on a more stable footing.   Fortunately for JCPenney, it is well financed and has a strong financial partner in its owners. As such, management won’t lose too much sleep over being in the red. However, the company needs to produce some better results across the remainder of this fiscal to prove its strategy is working. Aloha Friday! 🤙🏼 Here are some interesting stories from the world of retail for Friday, May 24: 👖 Shares of Ross Stores, Inc. rallied in extended trading Thursday after the discount clothing chain raised its full-year profit forecast, even as higher prices continue to hit its low- to middle-income shoppers. 👕 Ralph Lauren ended its fiscal year on an upbeat note with earnings and revenue that beat expectations as its average unit prices continued to rise. Ralph Lauren’s revenue increased 2% to $1.568 billion. 🥫 Ahold Delhaize has announced plans to close an undisclosed number of underperforming Stop & Shop grocery stores in the US this year. The closures are part of an evaluation of the overall portfolio. 🏠 Williams-Sonoma, Inc. CEO Laura Alber has explained she's handling a tough housing market. The chain is leaning into what it calls easy updates, or things consumers can do for their homes when they’re not moving. 📦 Amazon CEO Andy Jassy is worried about the “negative consequences” of regulating big businesses, including the Seattle-based tech and e-commerce conglomerate, he told shareholders at Amazon’s annual meeting. 🥩 Lidl US is preparing to overhaul its meat department in time for Independence Day, according to a top company official. It also plans to launch a new private label for packaged meats. 👚 The chief executive and board of Gildan Activewear have resigned, following hedge fund Browning West's successful proxy campaign. Kiehl’s will have a dedicated digital storefront within the Amazon Premium Beauty section. 🇨🇳 China's online retail sales have continued to grow steadily in the first four months of 2024. According to official data from the Ministry of Commerce, online retail sales increased 11.5% year-over-year to 4.41tn yuan ($620.52bn). 🏬 Seattle’s Pacific Place mall sells at deep discount. The mall sold for $66.75 million, well below its 2014 sale price of $271 million. I have never met Mr. Rosen but he seems to be an exceptional person, visionary, leader and results driven. Taking a historic brand and moving it forward step-by-step in a measured, intelligent, customer and brand/product oriented way. I mean this in the best possible way - it’s like he is a hybrid of old school best practices/training and applying that in a new and relevant way to change today and create a relevant brand that almost disappeared. Today, we announced our first-quarter earnings which show the positive traction of our “A Bold New Chapter” strategy. The hard work and dedication of our colleagues helped us deliver a solid first quarter. Here are the key takeaways: ◾Our First 50 Macy’s locations, which serve as test stores for merchandise, visual and staffing initiatives, showed that when we provide our customers with the right product, experience and value, we deliver sales growth. The Macy’s team is focused on newness in market brands and the reimagination of our Private Brand portfolio.  ◾Bloomingdale's and Bluemercury continued to foster brand love and loyalty.   ◽ Exciting to see the growth at Bloomingdale’s in advanced contemporary. The DNA of this brand gives it the ability to compete for share of wallet across a range of categories. Expansion of Bloomie’s and Outlet stores continues with three new stores this year.  ◽ Bluemercury achieved its 13th consecutive quarter of sales growth, driven by continued strength in skincare and expansion of key brand partners. Our plans to open at least 30 new locations and remodel roughly 30 locations are underway, with one new location and three remodels slated for the second quarter. Good Morning Everyone! It is a Beauty Insight. [DoorDash Reaches New Heights with Expanded Ulta Beauty Partnership] Ulta Beauty is cooperating with DoorDash to deliver its beauty products to a wider audience. Since late 2021, Ulta Beauty has been offering same-day delivery via DoorDash Drive. Now, the partnership has expanded to provide on-demand delivery from over 1,350 stores across all 50 states. This marks the first time that all of DoorDash's monthly active users can order from a beauty retailer in every state. Consumers can now shop for over 25,000 products from more than 600 brands, including cosmetics, fragrances, skincare, haircare, and wellness, on the DoorDash app. Members of the Ulta Beauty Rewards program can link their accounts through the Ulta Beauty storefront on the DoorDash app to earn points on every purchase. Ulta Beauty stores are also included in DashPass, DoorDash’s subscription program, allowing members to order with $0 delivery fees and reduced service fees. Consumers can shop within the dedicated Beauty tile on DoorDash and receive their items within an hour on average. Ulta Beauty customers can continue to shop for same-day delivery on ulta.com and the Ulta Beauty app, which are powered by DoorDash Drive. Other beauty retailers partnering with DoorDash include Sally Beauty, Sephora, and MAC Cosmetics. Shanna Prevé, Vice President of Partnerships at DoorDash, said, "We are thrilled to offer consumers unprecedented access to beauty essentials on DoorDash, including their favorite Ulta Beauty products and brands for every need and occasion. Whether indulging in the latest trends or stocking up on essentials for their daily routines, new and existing Ulta Beauty customers can now conveniently shop for all things beauty on DoorDash." Ulta Beauty operates over 1,350 retail stores across 50 states and sells its products through its website. Founded in 2013, DoorDash provides delivery services in more than 25 countries. DoorDash, based in San Francisco, is the largest food, grocery, and household goods delivery company in the United States. In the US, where convenience stores are often not nearby, DoorDash is widely used for ordering snacks, drinks, and household items easily from home, especially by college students and the MZ generation. As of 2024, DoorDash holds 65% of the US food delivery app market, with Uber Eats at 23% and Grubhub at 8%. Comparable to South Korea's Baemin, DoorDash will now expand the sale of Ulta Beauty products across the US. This allows Ulta Beauty to reach more consumers beyond its retail stores, website, and app, leveraging DoorDash's extensive network.

Good read for points to consider. I would add a few more. On data, capture the right level of detail that allows observable corrections to improve the scorecards. Get agreement from all stakeholders on the measurement and the details behind the measurement. I remember a previous role where it took several months for accounting and merchandising to agree on the inputs for the margin calculation. Do not underestimate the need for change management. You create a scorecard to ensure success. It will flush issues that require change in the retailer and supplier networks. Leaders must be expect and support those changes. Some of those changes will be uncomfortable and may strike close to home.

Sharing on New WM NHM larger layout: Since 1998, Walmart customers have looked to the convenience of Neighborhood Markets to get what they need. A smaller size meets a stellar assortment, creating a store that places the community at its very center. And that’s not changing. In fact, Walmart recently committed to opening or converting more than 150 stores in the next five years – with the Neighborhood Market format set to benefit. Two new stores, one in the Dune Lakes area of Santa Rosa Beach, Florida, the other in the Vine City neighborhood of Atlanta, are the first to open under the new initiative. The stores aren’t just new or remodeled. They’re also bigger. With 57,000 square feet of salesfloor and pickup and delivery space, the Dune Lakes and Vine City stores will have a footprint that’s about 17,000 square feet larger than the average Neighborhood Market.
