Design as a profession is dead. Everyone has the tools in their pocket to make something look snazzy. Line – shape – color – texture – type – composition can be controlled by template platforms and AI prompt engineering. But those tools lack the human ability to make unexpected connections that shape how people receive and respond to a communication. That's what separates design from decoration. So, while design as a commodity is not going away, design professionals — and insightful clients — can still do work that truly serves the message and the receiver. Andy McBride and I have talked a lot about AI and The Work, and his article linked below is the non-nerdy version - (spoiler: it's fine, and it's just another tool). The nerdy version is this: Language model-type AI can't do design because it's about meaning and LLMs aren't aiming for meaning. LLMs are a rejection of the idea that the system needs to create meaning. LLMs rely on us to create the meaning. For many things, that's fine. But design is about the relationships between people and signs, things, actions and systems. LLM's aren't aware of that. They aren't aware of anything. To paraphrase Dennis Yi Tenen: "meaning resides in the world and changes depending on context. For design to be meaningful, it has to play by the rules of physics and history". And psychology and sociology too.

A lot of what we do as designers is clean up. Sure, we talk about story arcs and designing the experience, but the average presentation may not have the time or resources to think bigger than getting it done, even when it’s an essential pitch by the C-suite for a new initiative. That's where following the template, using it wisely to maximize variation, and keeping it simple comes into play. Much of what you need to say should be in the talk track rather than in the slide, and if you need to go into detail, use an appendix, preread existing material, or a download to let people dive deep. Designing for a screen comes with practice, like riding a bike. In my experience helping thousands of presenters, the less design YOU have to do, the better it is for you and the AUDIENCE. Focus on *design that matters.* Be *intentional with design.* #presentationdesign

Determine high-priority features in less than an hour. Get everyone in a room. Pass out stickies. Document every task users perform on your app. One task per sticky. Write furiously for 15 minutes. Group similar stickies into feature sets. (Below you’ll see a photo of a workshop I led where we condensed ~70 tasks to 17 features.) Vote for the 3 features you believe are most important to the user. Initial beside your desired feature to cast a vote. The two features with the highest vote count are your high-priority features. Y’all think you’re so slick with those AI generated LinkedIn posts 🤭 Why do I know they’re ChatGPT generated? Because I’ve done the same before. Don’t get me wrong - I know the demand to be chronically online is CRIPLING so to keep your sanity you rely on AI to write your posts. Fine. But some tips to make it a bit less obvious: 1️⃣ have you noticed all of them have a headline containing a colon? It’s always something like ‘Trends In AI: How To Spot AI Generated Text’ 2️⃣ it’s always initial case: again, see above example. Every word in that sentence is capitalised. Dead giveaway 3️⃣ random hashtags you wouldn’t come up with yourself (also with initial case): it’s always something like #SpotTheAi #AiInPractice #TipsForLinkedin 4️⃣ It always finishes with some corny CTA - ‘So let’s spot AI generated together - one sentence at a time!’ Look, there’s nothing wrong with using AI to help you out. But I can tell you now, this will get old very soon. People will not trust your word once they start spotting this. How do you build trust when you’re not even showcasing your own opinions? So I invite you to think long-term - create quality content that brings value. Quality over quantity, always!

🤚 STOP piling everything onto your UX designers ✋ UX is in danger of becoming too broad. It's already too loose of a definition and I regularly see the goalposts moving on expectations around what UX designers are responsible for. So I'd partly disagree with the post below and say that actually, from what's mentioned, "CX" aims to encompass the: - Packaging - YouTube videos of people unboxing their iPhones - Genius Bar - Advertising - Calling plan you buy - Whether your friends have iPhones too 🧠 Remember: CX is your experience beyond the product. So, let's stop piling everything onto UX designers and instead, empower them by understanding distinct roles and bridge the gap to create holistic and impactful experiences for both; customers and users. #customerexperience #customerjourney #userexperience #CX #UX #UXvsCX #apple #iphone

As a teacher and mentor to my students, I have always used the SMART goals method.
