  • Deluge in a Paper Cup

    Slice

Deluge in a paper cup is the second book by poet and writer, Jennifer Kite-Powell. Delgue beckons us away from our phones, our computers and the chaos around us to reconnect with a moment in time where a leaflet of poems or a short story was something you savored. Written in Jennifer's insistent female voice, Deluge in a paper cup captures the unpredictable undulations of the human condition and how we navigate tumultous times in a paper cup.

The book is a collection of poems from the author’s experiences living and traveling in Europe since 2009. The poems themselves are short, short stories that cross the mutable lines between love, lust longing and truth in our lives. From one line verbal bricks like Condensed Milk, the digital dystopia love poem Artificial Intelligence and modern odes, Open Apology to Bukowski and DH Lawrence Hate Mosquitos, Kite-Powell bares all and lets you into her world with abandon, hiding nothing from the reader.

Influenced by Charles Bukowski, Bernadette Mayer and Harold Pinter along with Mark Twain, Ranier Maria Rilke and Milan Kundera, Kite-Powell brings a touch of acerbic reality, mixed with longing and realistic romanticism to her stream of consciousness poems. Her work in Love, Lust, Longing & Truth evokes a feeling, a smell or emotion that leaves you at the edge of what's comfortable.

New York-based multimedia artist Chantal Calato’s artwork for the book brings the poems to life in four original mixed media drawings that show the frenetic nature of emotion.

The author was born in San Antonio, Texas, grew up in Thomson, GA and has spent the past decade floating free in Europe. She currently lives nowhere, somewhere between here and there with her beagle Henry.

  • Unseen

    -

Unseen is a multi-media art installation by the New York artist Chantal Calato. The heart of the installation is an orchestration of real people’s voices revealing their stories and how they were affected by toxic waste inside their own homes at Love Canal. These stories, from one single neighborhood, chillingly span across decades.

In 2015, Calato's brother was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a blood cancer that eats away at your bones like osteoporosis. He lives in Niagara Falls, New…

He lives in Niagara Falls, New York on a block with row after row of families dealing with serious life threatening rare cancers and diseases.

    This is not a coincidence.

With recent testing of the ground inside their homes, it’s become clear that waste from the nearby infamously toxic Love Canal is still poisoning people's lives despite the government’s promises it was cleaned up decades ago.

Unseen will premiere in 2018, 40 years after Love Canal was initially declared a disaster by President Jimmy Carter.

The work is dedicated to Calato's brother and to the families who have suffered from the terrible environmental disaster at Love Canal.
