•The motivation for this project was to facilitate vocal fold research for the BYU Voice Biomechanics Lab. This lab seeks to learn about human vocal folds by modeling them in silicone materials that have similar vibration properties and testing them under similar conditions to those experienced by biological human vocal folds. The current process used to create the vocal fold models requires machining metal parts, making silicone molds from those metal parts, and performing a multi-step molding process to make the four-layer vocal fold model. This process takes nearly two days and at least six man-hours and has a yield of only about 25%. To improve this process, a rapid prototyping machine (Vocal Bot) was developed which automates the models’ production, thus freeing up valuable resources and accelerating research.
