A new report from Energy Futures examines what is required for B.C. to achieve its mandated ZEV sales target of 90% in 2030 and 100% in 2035. The report finds there are significant public charging infrastructure and electricity generation gaps that need to be closed if the government's targets are to be achieved. B.C. is planning on building 10,000 public chargers by 2030, 30,000 less than what is required to support an increasingly electrified fleet. Powering this infrastructure depends on an additional 2,700 GWh of electricity generation capacity. Automakers are committed to helping the provincial government move to a lower carbon economy and increase the number of ZEVs on B.C.'s roads. There are now over 80 ZEV models available in every size and vehicle segment with an additional 40 models expected this year. But achieving these ambitious sales targets depends on stronger consumer support in the form of consumer financial and non-financial incentives, charging infrastructure, grid investments, and education. This is a huge topic. China cornering the 21st-century equivalent of oil and gas, specifically solar, wind, EV cars, rare earth mining and refining to a degree that is more extreme than the Arab domination of oil production in the previous century, which allowed the Arab embargo of 1974 and the economic downturn of the late 1970s. In the case of a conflict with the US, this Chinese industrial hegemony may lead to a massive economic disruption, and ultimately the loss of grade power competition.

Today, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission published its new rule on transmission and cost allocation, with new requirements for electric transmission providers. The rule aligns with several recommendations highlighted in our recent report: https://lnkd.in/exqHaMAa Adequate planning for new transmission is critical to facilitate the clean energy transition and help manage unprecedented load growth on the U.S. electric grid. And effective planning makes decisions about how costs are allocated much easier. I encourage you to read the report, which includes more specific recommendations to inform effective implementation of the final rule across regions. We recommend that Congress consider additional federal financial assistance to ease the strain on ratepayers as new transmission infrastructure is built out. And we recommend that the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) help improve long-term projections of transmission needs and enable greater stakeholder participation in planning processes. #electricity #grid #transmission #power

Today, the Solar Energy Manufacturers for America (SEMA) Coalition testified at the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative hearing on supply chain resilience. Executive Director Michael Carr emphasized support for effective trade policy to combat against the floods of cheap Chinese solar products and ensure a level playing field for U.S. solar manufacturers. “We see a geopolitical imperative in ensuring that a cartel of state-backed Chinese-headquartered firms do not dominate this sector, notably the capital-intensive wafer and polysilicon segments of the industry, as they do today." It's debate night in America! Yet unlike the presidential election, Americans don't need to choose between renewable energy sources. The #cleanenergy grid of the future will rely on a diverse group of carbon-free energy sources all working together, including wind, solar, batteries, and - of course - water power. #Hydropower is an essential component in this mix, supporting other renewables with its quick and reliable dispatchability. A recent DOE report found that existing hydropower and pumped storage offer low-carbon operating reserves to support approximately 140 GW of variable renewable energy. At the National Hydropower Association, we are partnering with other clean energy technologies to create a strong and reliable clean energy grid. No matter who occupies the White House next year, this priority won't change.

Reconductoring could enable 764 GW of transmission-connected solar by 2035. (My latest for PV Magazine USA) Replacing existing transmission lines, known as conductors, with advanced conductors could enable 764 GW of transmission-connected solar by 2035 even if transmission in new corridors was limited, found a study by UC Berkeley and GridLab researchers. 3M CTC Global TS Conductor Amol Phadke #Reconductoring

As large swathes of America sizzle through record temperatures this week, the Energy Institute published its annual statistical review of world energy: it makes for grim reading for people hoping to see rapid progress on the energy transition... Amanda Chu has the story Countries burnt record amounts of oil and coal last year, sending global fossil fuel consumption and emissions to all-time highs, the Energy Institute reported. Oil demand grew 2.6 per cent, surpassing 100mn barrels per day for the first time. Meanwhile, the share of fossil fuels in the energy mix declined slightly by half a percentage point, but still made up more than 81 per cent of consumption. While EI’s estimates are largely in line with the International Energy Agency’s, its authors offer a more sombre view of the pace of the energy transition compared with the Paris-based watchdog. “Today’s new data provides little encouragement in terms of global climate change mitigation,” said Nick Wayth, chief executive of EI. “Arguably, the transition has not even started.” Financial Times Energy Institute

In this Forbes article, Anand Gopal, Executive Director for Policy Research at the think tank Energy Innovation, offers new analysis of how the rightward shift of the EU Parliament following last week's election threatens to be undermine many of EU's bold new policies aimed at "helping citizens breathe cleaner air, boosting economic competitiveness through industrial growth, cutting energy costs, and protecting against Russia’s weaponization of oil and gas." Please take a look at his important message. Happy to have helped with this. #EU #EUEnergy #energypolicy #cleanenergy https://lnkd.in/e9u-iZZC

We've got a new issue brief up today on how IRA tools can help scale virtual power plants. Making the best use of distributed energy resources requires rethinking financing. By using virtual power plants, we can turn DERs into public resources. This report shows how green banks can help enable such a shift using tools already present in the Inflation Reduction Act. Not all #RECs are created equal.... if our goal is #decarbonization, we need to think beyond MW hours and evaluate RECs based on #impact. Clean Incentive's data enhanced RECs enable #cleanenergy buyers to differentiate impactful RECs and match their carbon #emissions - to demonstrate real progress toward net zero, backed by data, not green washing. Casey R. Martinez explains it best to Chad Reed on HASI's latest episode of the Climate Positive Podcast.

https://lnkd.in/eG5tvaiv Thanks to the The Washington Times for publishing this Op Ed today. There is so much happening so quickly in energy, it’s difficult to keep up. For example, ERCOT just released load growth projections with a startling amount of projected growth - and that’s just one state - and it’s not alone. The slack in the system has been taken up and the rubber has officially met the road. Now it’s up to us to make sure we act to ensure reliability and enable load growth to power America’s economic engine. Permitting and siting reform, common sense regulation, and a reasonable amount of market certainty is needed to deliver those outcomes reliably. Competitive markets are the most efficient way to meet that goal by shifting risk off customers and rewarding the lowest cost, most reliable resources. #reliability #power #growth

The energy transition has already begun, the question now is how we can transition with enough speed and scale to prevent the most extreme impacts of climate change. Industry leaders recently gave their insights at Stanford University, read this article to learn how experts believe we can achieve our energy transition goals!

Climate action is conservation—and why clean energy is key to saving billions of birds. Rooftop solar and microgrids should be maximized as part of the transition, but utility-scale infrastructure is critical to reaching net zero emissions. As deployment ramps up, conservation groups can play a key role in making sure that infrastructure is planned with both wildlife and people in mind. https://lnkd.in/gS63n3JJ
