In a recent interview with the Chicago Reader, I spoke about the surge in unionization of the city's service workers and the political implications of unionizing. Following the pandemic, our country has seen the service industry organize at an unprecedented rate. Whenever there’s a union drive, it’s an effort to pull some power away from the employers. And that becomes something that has strong political implications. Read more of our conversation at: https://lnkd.in/eiDJDc_4

Thinkinc. is proud to have worked with the Alternative Schools Network for many years. This latest report reveals a troubling trend: young people of color are disproportionately affected by both being out of school and joblessness. It is imperative that we address the systemic issues preventing the future development of these students and the current issues of public safety. As a society, we have an obligation to take action. #HealingThroughAction

Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker is prioritizing efforts to combat Black homelessness in Illinois with a proposed $50 million budget increase. This initiative, based on a recent report, targets significant disparities by providing rental assistance, legal aid, and new programs. The report, a collaboration between state agencies and UIC's Institute for Research on Race and Public Policy, highlights that Black individuals in Illinois are eight times more likely to experience homelessness than white individuals. Governor Pritzker emphasized at a UIC event that homelessness stems from historical discrimination and structural barriers, reflecting a commitment to collaborative solutions across sectors. Christine Haley, Illinois' homelessness chief, underscores ongoing efforts to address disparities, with state leaders committed to dismantling the Black-white homelessness gap through Pritzker's proposed budget. Pritzker's budget proposal, currently under review, includes $50 million for Illinois' Home Illinois Plan, supporting rental assistance, pilot programs for at-risk groups, and legal aid. https://lnkd.in/gdEHD6jx

The guaranteed income pilot will be re-launching as the city of Chicago works to spend federal COVID-19 relief funding. Among the renewed programs, there is a boost in funding for survivors of #genderbasedviolence (GBV) bringing the total support to $10 million. As survivors continue to navigate a post pandemic world with social safety nets funded through government programs, this increase could be lifesaving for many victims of GBV. According to The Network: Advocating Against Domestic Violence Measuring Safety 2022 Report, the fastest growing calls to the Illinois Domestic Violence Hotline have been for public benefits and financial support requests with a 475% increase in calls since 2021. There is a consistent need for financial resources for all survivors to break the cycle of violence and gain independence. The Network: Advocating Against Domestic Violence Measuring Safety 2023 Report, a comprehensive overview of the statewide response to gender-based violence, with a focus on #domesticviolence and #sexualviolence is set to be released on May 3rd. All of my Illinois friends I hope you are ready 🗣 ! The passage of Illinois House Bill 5344 (HB 5344) represents a significant update to the Behavior Analyst Licensing Act. This bill, now awaiting the governor's signature, mandates several important changes that will impact service providers in the behavior analysis sector. I assumed by simply taking the bill at face value the following key aspects of HB 5344 included: 👉🏾 Licensing Timeline Acceleration: The compliance timeline for licensing has been reduced significantly. Instead of the previous 30 months post-effectiveness of the Act, individuals are now required to be licensed within just 10 months following the adoption of necessary administrative rules. 👉🏾 Title and Practice Restrictions: It stipulates that no one can engage in the practice of applied behavior analysis or use related professional titles such as "licensed behavior analyst" or "licensed assistant behavior analyst" unless they are properly licensed. 👉🏾 Business Compliance: The bill also tightens regulations around business practices, specifying that any business organization providing behavior analysis services must ensure that all members, partners, shareholders, directors, officers, and employees involved in delivering these services are licensed However this bill is NOT necessarily to reinforce professional standards in the field of behavior analysis and ensure that services are provided by qualified individuals. Please see comments for Dr Ashley’s clarification For more detailed information about HB 5344, you can visit the LegiScan page for the bill https://lnkd.in/gNxTUQHy Thanks for sharing this update Dr. Ashley.

In presenting this work, Suparna Bhaskaran of the Institute on Race, Power and Political Economy made such an important point about how we got here: it's not just that segregation made it difficult to build wealth in majority Black and Latine spaces. It's that wealth and power were systematically transferred OUT of those spaces to white people and majority white spaces. Through mob violence, arson, restrictive covenants, selling on contract, extractive labor and current-day predatory lending or very little mainstream lending at all, the transfer of wealth has also meant a transfer of power. It is right to feel upset and unsettled by the numbers in this report. As @alwaystheself puts it, ideally everyone should be uncomfortable with collective suffering and injustice. Our work at The Chicago Community Trust is to partner with others to do something about it. In a world where so many of us are understandably paralyzed by all that is wrong and unjust, I am grateful to be at a place where this is our fundamental work.

Thank you for sharing the amazing idea. It reminds me of my first non-parenting book I read after the maternity leave since summer of 2018. I tried my best to apply for the program International Development Youth Forum in Japan in 2019, the most international platform I used to join, but had not think that I would have to read even a book. My time as a typical working mom in the country balancing between paid work and housework were too mediocre. My percentage of being accepted was very slim. Then someone left unexpectedly making the opportunity dawned on me. I know nothing to do in front of so many tasks with so many great people at that time because what I had prior to that was the impacts through corporate social responsibilities, my good luck of working for good companies before. The voice of corporate world to the development world was still not adequate that time, to my humble world. I urgently checked out with almost all the foreign books in town that time about the relevant books. Do you have any book talking about situations of Kenya, Brazil and India, our three cases study then? Any book about the trends of international development? All the nice books took time to be ordered from overseas. I finally caught up with "Completing Capitalism: Heal Business to Heal the World". The book enlightened me with the #economics #of #mutuality , the mutuality of corporate work and social work. From this experience, I think that, we would be start reading when we are inspired enough and motivated enough. That is also when the values of the books become most utilizable for us. I am exposed with Social Business Creation and one human right-supported business way by UNDP named UNDP B+HR (because in spring of 2022 when the Training of Trainer course were open for Vietnam, I was invited by the National Economics University to join the TOT course after my completion of a training under $4,400 scholarship at #SBC, nominated by FTU Innovation and Incubation Space as a result of my previous experience in social impact work: https://lnkd.in/gu3KGQB8). So I think The Profiteers: How business privatizes profit and socialize cost is a very nice book to start with if you have ever wondered the connection between profitability and sociality, how what we called livelihood or mere work actually bring values to the space we live. I will be finishing my first casual book this autumn, which was supposed to be the autumn last year when I was attending the Harvard Project for Asian and International Relations (HPAIR) in Hong Kong (this year it is going to be hosted in the beautiful Bangkok with application is open! ), the book cover: https://lnkd.in/g8nxtfuw Last autumn I summarized my 2 years of being on LinkedIn, getting friends and learning from the community in LinkedIn, in a casual book, and this year, it will be my 3 year milestone of being in this enriching community

Good luck to all those running for elected school board this fall! Collecting 1,000+ signatures is HARD WORK. It will take listening, humility, teamwork, and coalition-building to best serve the young people of Chicago. This democratically elected board is charged with protecting what works and advancing equity by changing what doesn't. Those skills and more are what aspiring school board members and education advocates are learning at the Academy for Local Leadership. As we navigate this transition as a city, it’s crucial for stakeholders—parents, educators, organizers, and community leaders—to stay informed and engaged. For a deeper dive into the details and implications of this change, I highly recommend reading the comprehensive article by WBEZ Chicago. Here are a few key takeaways: Elections and Appointments: In this first phase, Chicagoans will elect 10 of the 21 board members, while the mayor will appoint the remaining members and the board president. The board will be fully elected in fall 2026. District-Based Representation: For this first election, 20 districts have been combined into 10. Each of the 10 districts has been divided into sub-districts—A and B. Each district will elect one board member from either A or B. Appointed members must be selected from the other sub-district. Candidate Engagement: Prospective candidates must secure between 1,000 and 3,000 signatures from their district to qualify. This process is now underway, emphasizing the importance of community support and involvement. Candidates began turning in their signatures on June 17th.

I want to make sure last week’s piece by Malachi Barrett of BridgeDetroit on the Renaissance Center got noticed amid all the news around the NFL Draft. Whether you’re a fan of the building or not, the RenCen has an impressive history. Mayor Coleman Young and Henry Ford had strong ideas about what Detroit needed, from the architect to the developers to the tenants. Barrett does a great job of respectfully outlining the RenCen’s history and what leaders envisioned would be the impact of this enormous undertaking. They formed a collaboration of 51 corporate investors. They believed it would make Detroit more attractive to businesses and residents. This project would have a major impact on the world of work, urban planning and architecture, and economic development. Barrett states: “There are parallels between the RenCen’s debut and conversations about the state of downtown today. Then and now, reducing crime, relocating businesses downtown, and expanding hotel capacity were viewed as important for the city’s success.” I couldn’t agree more. Nearly 50 years later, the Downtown Detroit Partnership, Detroit Economic Growth Corporation, the City of Detroit and others in the public and private sectors continue to tackle these challenges and opportunities. GM’s move doesn’t change that. It only means we have to think differently about how we get there. #DowntownDetroit, #WMIH, #UrbanInnovation, #RenCen, #Leadership https://lnkd.in/gpKJ9DTD

“The RLTO offers extensive protections for tenants that may surprise landlords who are not familiar with Chicago’s intricacies and the RLTO gives tenants extensive rights to terminate leases if the landlord violates the tenant’s rights. Landlords operating in Chicago should take the time to learn the RLTO and periodically refresh their knowledge of the rules. To that end, the new summary is a good place to start, but it is always helpful for landlords to consult with an attorney before taking steps that fall under the regulation, including evictions, rent raises, and collecting security deposits.” - Thomas Ball and Chad Poznansky

Today in the Chicago Tribune, Intersect Illinois Chair John Atkinson makes a strong case for how Illinois is taking a national lead in economic development and as a corporate relocation and expansion destination. ⚡ For the 11th year in a row, Site Selection Magazine ranked the Chicago metro area as the No. 1 metro area for new and expanding businesses and in 2023 ⚡ Illinois ranked as the No. 2 state in the nation for corporate expansions and relocations. ⚡ Illinois also ranked No. 1 in the Midwest for new business creation for 2022, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. ⚡ In CNBC’s Best States for Business rankings, Illinois moved from No. 3 to No. 2 for infrastructure; from No. 6 to No. 2 for education; from No. 8 to No. 6 in access to capital; and from No. 20 to No. 9 in the nation for cost of living. ⚡ We have created smart and competitive incentives for emerging industries looking to build their business and the jobs that come with it here in Illinois. ⚡ On average, a new business relocated to or expanded in Illinois every day in 2023. Illinois has a "people and power" advantage with a deep, trained workforce and a strong electric grid that bests other states. Our largest utility, ComEd, ranks as the most reliable electric utility in the nation. "Growth of this speed and scale requires continued investments in equity-centered education and training to ensure our workforce is prepared to step into valuable job opportunities." #BeinIllinois #TeamIllinois

📝 Rewriting Cleveland's Narrative: From "Dead Last" to Dynamic Growth 📈 Urban narratives are the stories we tell ourselves about the place in which we live. Six years ago, Cleveland lawyer Jon Pinney shocked Northeast Ohio with his The City Club of Cleveland speech, declaring Cleveland "dead last" in education, job creation, and economic performance. Fast forward to now, and Baiju Shah, President and CEO of the Greater Cleveland Partnership, paints a different picture, highlighting low unemployment, job opportunities, and positive national headlines for Cleveland. While national media have ridiculed Cleveland for decades, Shah noted positive recent headlines. The Wall Street Journal described Cleveland as “The New Center of the World” thanks to the largely cloud-free total eclipse of the sun on April 8, plus the 2024 NCAA Women’s Final Four at Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse. The Washington Post declared Cleveland “Is America’s best example of turning around a dying downtown” because of its record of converting offices to apartments since the pandemic. Shah emphasizes collaboration, diversity, and sustainable growth, urging a shift from the “ego-system” to an ecosystem of aligned civic goals. His message is clear: “Don’t bet against Cleveland.” The city's resilience and potential are evident despite ongoing challenges, offering hope for a brighter future. 🌐 Please read the full article here https://bit.ly/3R5QgVs Let's embrace this spirit and work together to shape a positive narrative for Cleveland. #ThisIsCLE #UrbanRenewal #CommunityGrowth #PositiveChange #SaferCleveland #GreaterCLEPartnership #ClevelandRocks

Last week, I attended an event that aimed to bring attention to a significant issue: children suing Michigan sheriff’s, the two largest jail telecom companies, and billionaire Detroit Pistons owner Tom Gores. The lawsuit asserts the children’s right to hug their incarcerated parents. The issue of whether children have the right to hug their incarcerated parents is both deeply emotional and complex, touching on the funding need for human connection. As someone who has experienced incarceration, I understand firsthand the profound impact that physical touch can have on maintaining security and a sence of closeness that is especially crucial for young children. Unfortunately, the debate is complicated by financial interests, as large telecommunications companies and influential figures like Tom Gores seems to support policies that limit in-person visits in favor of more expensive phone and video visits. This raises a significant ethical questions about the role of these powerful entities in shaping policies that affect vulnerable families. It’s intriguing to consider whether the Detroit Pistons players are aware of Tom Gores’ stance and, if so whether they feel the need to address it. Athletes and other public figures have the potential to use their platforms to advocate for more humane policies that prioritize family connections over corporate profits, potentially sparking meaningful change. #DetroitPistons #TomGores #Athletes #Children #IncarceratedParents
