Hat tip to Phil Hill & Glenda Morgan for the note recently about the 'search cliff' in higher education -- I wouldn't have seen it otherwise! As Glenda highlights, buying names is becoming less and less of a viable option for colleges, "thanks in part to changing privacy laws, but also ... to declines in the use of standardized tests and worsened by the demographic cliff itself. Halda.AI predicts that the supply of names available for marketing by colleges and universities will fall precipitously over the next several years." Doing things the same way isn't a path forward - and the dramatic increase in digital marketing costs isn't sustainable for many colleges. Thought this was great perspective - "In the traditional higher ed numbers game, it’s understood that a high percentage of traffic and leads will fall through the cracks. In this new normal, where the student pool is smaller and every pageview is earned, creating anything less than a first-class experience will leave schools unable to compete. I wrote this blog to discuss a major issue with K12 accountability systems. Every district I've ever worked with or worked in, says they want students to graduate with durable skills (critical thinking, collaboration, or communication, etc.). We boldy include them in our Portraits of a Graduate or strategic plans but then fail to follow up in our Accountability systems. There is major disconnect between accountability systems and the inclusion of measuring the skills that matter for the future. There's been legitimate reasons why this has been the case in the past, but with AI we now have the technological capacity to change the status quo. Check out my blog to read more!!

Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) has introduced Ed, every student's own AI assistant. While it will be helpful in several ways, it doesn't intend to replace the teachers, and definitely can not for so many reasons. Would students prefer to approach teachers with their queries, or do they lean towards relying on Ed? The concept of an AI assistant like Ed is truly remarkable. It makes the lives of students, teachers, parents, and schools easier. However, I think it's crucial to maintain an environment where the students feel comfortable seeking guidance from both their peers and their highly qualified teachers.
