Had a great conversation with MarketWatch discussing how Zillow uses AI to assist buyers and sellers. We discussed AI and ML-powered features like Natural Language Search that allows users to express preferences naturally for customized listings,  AI for personalization for content delivery, and the use of AI to enhance home valuation through Neural Zestimates by analyzing unstructured data from listing images and descriptions. In case you missed it Monday: Google has updated their documentation for the Beta Carousels feature and provided clearer guidelines. To be included in this new feature, you will need a summary page and structured data. The ItemList, along with the basic subtypes, will do the job. Once you've completed these requirements, you can either wait for Google to update your page or fill out a form if you're located in the EEA (European Economic Area). As a product guy, Instacart's foray into restaurant delivery piqued my interest. While it echoes the "everything-to-your-door" playbook pioneered by Doordash and copied across globe, two key questions emerge: (a) Is MVP enough in a commoditized space? Do we need built-in differentiation for commoditized features, even at launch? Should we focus on launching MLP (Minimum Lovable Product) vs a MVP in first go itself assuming users may not give us a second chance (in terms of perception built for a standard experience) for a commoditized product or a feature? And if answer to that is yes for a MLP, next ques to answer is does your org have patience - Are your business leaders ready to wait / to invest in features that may take time to pay off but could become strategic differentiators? (b) When prioritizing inputs for our product and feature pipeline, should competitor analysis hold equal weight alongside problem discovery methodologies like 'Job-To-Be-Done' or an 'Opportunity Solution Tree'? Are these frameworks overly theoretical, suggesting a more pragmatic approach of mirroring competitors, or is there inherent value in diverging from the pack? While it's unlikely that Instacart's approach solely relied on competitor benchmarking, these questions remain interesting, for consideration. 🦈 The term Retail Media Network (RMN) has officially jumped the shark! Rezwana Manjur, Editor in Chief for MARKETING-INTERACTIVE, recently penned a compelling article about an “industry-first” example of an airline creating an RMN. This highlights a broader trend: significant marketing and advertising innovations often undergo a naming adjustment period. Remember the early days of Digital Marketing? We called it New Media, eMarketing, Web Marketing, etc. Similarly, AI has been referred to as machine learning, deep learning, and neural networks. And let’s not forget the Metaverse, encompassing VR/AR/MR, Crypto, Blockchain, and NFTs. 🤔 While “Retail Media Networks” might be the term we’re using now, it’s much more essential to focus on what truly makes an RMN successful and therefore how it can make you successful in achieving your marketing & advertising objectives? Here are my key takeaways from the article: 1. Don’t be misled by the term “Retail.” The name refers to the trend’s origins, not its core. RMNs can be any media commerce network that connects you with a sizeable, frequently visiting audience. Effective media is about both reach and frequency. 📈 2. Fresh, first-party data is crucial. Networks with users who visit weekly or daily have a significant advantage. Recent data & insights is the killer ingredient that makes great RMNs stand out. 🔍 3. While closing the loop between advertising and sales is a must have. The truly valuable RMNs provide full-funnel opportunities, including metrics like brand-lift studies. Consumers don’t only live in just one part of the marketing funnel. Consider the data & statistics from our own Grab Superapp platform to illustrate this point: • On average, users spend 17 minutes browsing before ordering. ⏳ • 60% come to our platform without a specific food brand in mind. 🍽️ • 90% use our platform to find a new place they’ve never tried before. 🌟 So it is super important to focus on these critical aspects and redefine what makes an RMN successful before you jump in 🐇 What are your thoughts on the general evolution of new marketing terminologies? Despite initial optimism, the IPO market in 2024 has been subdued due to macroeconomic factors like the upcoming presidential election and elevated interest rates. Notable tech IPOs this year included Reddit, Astera Labs, Ibotta, and Rubrik. However, many high-profile companies have indicated they will not go public in 2024. Plaid’s CEO, Zach Perret, confirmed no IPO plans for 2024, with the company’s last valuation at $13.4 billion. Figma conducted a secondary market tender offer, hinting at no imminent IPO, with a recent valuation of $12.5 billion. Stripe held a tender offer valuing the company at $65 billion, down from $95 billion in 2021. Databricks raised $500 million last fall, valuing the company at $43 billion, and is likely to go public in 2025. Canva’s co-founder, Cliff Obrecht, indicated no IPO before 2025, possibly 2026. Parker just posted Rippling's new fundraising memo. It's the manifesto for compound startups and one of our initial inspirations for building Atlas. Here's a nugget that I really liked that summarizes how we feel about the competitive advantage of all-in-one startups over vertical startups (in customer support especially): "When we build corporate cards, we're not innovating on the way we issue corporate cards (through Stripe issuing or Marqeta) or the way we scan and extract metadata from receipts (which is mostly a vendor relationship for us today). We're going to win on the capabilities we have that are common to all Rippling products—the integration with the rest of Rippling and with employee data, the platform capabilities, and the common UX described above."
