Maybe it pushes us to reach higher and perform better at times, but it holds us back in the long run. My friend Debra Sabatini Hennelly is a coauthor of this great Harvard Business Review article on carewashing, which has a long history, but has really emerged since the pandemic. They coined the term “carewashing”, but actually I think most of us are instantly familiar with these cultures… The job is hell but there’s free access to a yoga app You get trained on psychological safety, but have never seen a senior person attempt to create it There’s a lot of bring your whole self to work rhetoric, but it’s soon blindingly obvious that only a fool would say what they actually think They also nail the root cause of this practice, which is a knee jerk effort to attract more people with family responsibilities and commitments, as well as young people who care about values, but *arent prepared to follow through*: “Carewashing also happens when leaders, in order to meet immediate hiring and retention challenges, claim to prioritize employee well-being but fail to follow through to ensure that their employees have the skills and resources to bring those commitments to life. For example, consider a CEO who, as part of their efforts to improve their organization’s hiring profile, insists that HR leaders include language in job descriptions that references a caring, safe, and inclusive culture and touts the organization’s commitment to flexibility. The idea is to attract women candidates, who are more likely to have caregiver roles that limit their ability to spend eight to 10 consecutive hours in the office, five days a week. Unpaid caregiving hours almost tripled between 2020 and 2023, and millennials have now become the largest cohort of caregivers who also work full time — enlarging the pool of candidates who may seek out organizations with flexible policies. However, while this tactic may improve diversity and hiring metrics in the short term, the new hires may quickly leave if nothing is changed within the organization to ensure managers know how to create psychologically safe environments where team members can ask for support and flexibility when needed.” A great read on why our siloed defaults don’t work, also a big focus of my own work!

Drawing from his unique background as both a former sportsman and psychoanalyst, Mike Brearley introduces a refreshing perspective. He encourages us to perceive ourselves as teams with internal players, each embodying different traits such as playfulness, seriousness, or indulgence. The crux lies in internal leadership. Brearley advocates for learning to "coach" these internal players, providing them with space while nudging them for optimal performance. This concept transcends the realm of sports stars, extending to the workplace. Employees, with their diverse talents, can leverage this approach to overcome limitations and realize their full potential. Yet, it's crucial to acknowledge the complexities. Managing these "internal teams" can be messy, often requiring tough decisions about which "players" to prioritize. Inevitably, trade-offs must be made. While nurturing certain ambitions, others may need to be temporarily sidelined. Success takes on a nuanced definition. As psychoanalyst Adam Phillips emphasizes, "our different selves have different projects." Through the Global 'We the Women' Survey, we were able to reach out to over 25,000+ women from 185 countries, so as to relate to us on how they see the future, their priorities, fears and hopes, and how global leaders can listen to them and support them as we collectively address issues, challenges and opportunities of the future 🌍. One of the statistics from the survey revealed that 46% of these women identify mental health as a barrier to the realization of their full potential. During the SDG Roundtable, while discussing about the We The Women survey, Amina J. Mohammed, UN Deputy Secretary-General said, "There are spectrums of mental health, so don't just put everything in one box". Mental health can result from not just Workplace stress, but also from Psychosocial stress, Trauma and abuse, Economic inequality, Stigma and Barriers, Health disparities, Traumatic events and many more. There are more communities and countries where women aren't allowed to speak out despite everything they go through. Their mental health is more at stake because of the pressure they put on themselves from trying to align with the policies, trying to please everyone and trying to meet up with their daily lives 💨. Apart from the demographics, we also have women within the age bracket of 18 and 34 years old. It's no news that the younger generation are falling into more and more depression, suicidal thoughts, unhealthy competition/comparison, imposter syndrome and the likes. Unfortunately, all of these challenges are just a minute fraction of the global crisis going on in the world today. After reading this post, a couple of thoughts came to mind. The article seems to overlook a significant demographic that #FemTech caters to, which is #menopause. There are 41.6M US women over the age of 45 - literally half the population. It is disheartening to see the lack of investment in women still prevailing. It raises questions as to why male leaders in the femtech industry have a higher success rate in securing funding. While acknowledging the importance of men, it is crucial for the forefront of femtech to be represented by women. Just as one would prefer a male perspective in a men's health-focused company. I was just speaking with friend Ralph Hasson this morning about how much boards and board conversations have changed since we started board service so many years ago. The days of NACD (National Association of Corporate Directors) events only covering audit committee, compensation committee, and FCPA issues have expanded to so many other equally important topics. This great read reminds us that the boards today no longer operate in closed-door, smoke-filled (thank goodness) rooms, but operate with transparency, inclusion, and dialogue. The importance of reviewing the right metrics lead to fulsome conversations around strategy, risk, and talent development, and requires that directors continue to grow and learn far beyond our executive experience. Remaining transparent demonstrates a commitment to accountability we have to shareholders and stakeholders. #leadership #transparency #governance #boardgovernance #continuouslearning

In other words, we recognise it when we experience it, even if we can’t quite put our finger on what it actually is. There are at least a half a dozen or more theories of leadership with even more descriptions of leadership styles and literally countless definitions of it. All too often the focus is on the characteristics and competencies of individuals leaders rather than on the process of leadership. Within the context of Getting to Better Together, it is perhaps best understood as a property of a group of people that, under appropriate circumstances, just emerges as a collective commitment to doing something that leads to ‘betterment’. New research from businessfourzero - a Heidrick & Struggles company's Chief People Officer Kate Thompson and The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) suggests it’s time to reframe the debate from reward-focused happiness to deeper (and incidentally cheaper) purpose-driven happiness.
