May is #StrokeAwarenessMonth, an opportunity to engage in important conversations around reducing the risk of stroke. At Biosense Webster, I continue to be encouraged by new and innovative solutions for #AFib patients, who are 5 times more likely to have a stroke. It's exciting to see momentum around improvements in stroke care, such as Biosense Webster's study on the investigational Laminar Left Atrial Appendage Elimination (LAAX) System, which aims to reduce stroke risk in non-valvular #Afib patients. Two things happened since this show originally aired. One is that I was invited to a fireside chat by the Advisory Board to talk with Abby Burns, one of the amazing hosts over at Radio Advisory; and we talked about value in the healthcare industry. And if you define value as benefit divided by costs, and you can cut costs—like cut admin burden costs in half—then you have created some really nice communal value, which we talked about at length during that aforementioned fireside chat. Here’s the other thing that happened since this show originally aired. I read the book by Mike Leavitt, mainly because Steve Schutzer, MD, kept talking about it. The title of the book is Finding Allies, Building Alliances. Maybe I will do a book report about this at some point, but let me share a couple of key quotes just to get the party started here. Mike Leavitt wrote, “A diverse alliance, well led and well managed, can bring resources to bear on a problem that no organization can match—even the largest of organizations. The synergy of resources—from financial to intellectual—can deal effectively with a wide range of issues confounding organizations today.” I found that very interesting. Sharing my thoughts on how UC Davis Health is working to decrease costs by reducing unwarranted variations in patient care. Leveraging artificial intelligence to provide accurate and meaningful data to illustrate patients’ problems to clinicians will be key. As I noted in this article below: “AI has the power to aggregate vast amounts of data and demonstrate the impact of different care pathways, informing nurses and physicians about the optimal way to deliver care for each patient. With AI providing constant surveillance of practice variations, maybe it won’t take many years for improved care algorithms to make their way into daily practice. We need to align incentives with this to speed up the adoption of these more effective approaches to improved care.” https://lnkd.in/gjYfRJmD

SIIM 2024 National Harbor Looking forward to seeing many of you starting Thursday, June 27th for SIIM. Radiology is continuing to change and technology is crucial to making radiologists more efficient. It will be great seeing some examples of that on display. This is especially crucial for cloud based remote reading. I personally think that we are now well past Teleradiology......I have never liked the term. “Cloud Radiology” is the direction that the majority of Radiology reading is headed towards. With reduced numbers of Radiologists (more leaving the field than entering, and an average Radiologist age of 54), and yet continued growing diagnostic imaging volume (5% annual growth each year, and an aging population that will increase the demand for imaging), we need AI and other technologies to bring efficiency, and the ability to provide great quality reading by the right radiologist anytime! Technology will not fully solve the dilemma, but its certainly a step in the right direction. See you at SIIM!
