This #Juneteenth, we recognize organizations like The Black In Gaming Foundation, Black Voices in Gaming, and Black Girl Gamers who advocate for inclusive online spaces and uplift Black professionals in the gaming industry. Games and immersive media have the power to tell meaningful stories that capture the rich histories and cultures of Black communities. One of my favorite examples to highlight is an immersive web experience called "Secret Garden," created by Stephanie Dinkins. It allows us to step into the oral histories of Black women, from surviving a slave boat and a 1920s Black-owned farm to surviving 9/11, and encountering an AI powered by Black women. Today, we celebrate these stories, their creators, and their impact. Check the link in the comments for more on the Secret Garden.

Wars are often defined by strategic errors and misguided decision making. The Streaming Wars are no different. This is a rare ‘After Action Review’ by one of the big players that provides a lot of insight into the current situation. “As we got into the streaming business in a very, very aggressive way, we tried to tell too many stories. Basically we invested too much, way ahead of possible returns. Roblox and Fortnite are not solely “games.” They’re UGC platforms cultivating communities and experiences digitally — “always on” and fully customized is the North Star strategy for how to maximize the value. It’s not easy — and it doesn’t work 100% of the time — neither was (and is) social media. But every brand has one and needed to learn how to maximize them, right? I think brands have to really start changing their perspectives and think of these platforms more like social media; it’s content, it’s connection, it’s personality, it’s identity, it’s commerce, and it’s experience. Another round of excitement and rebirths to emerge from #Hollywood as #Paramount, the original producer of #thegodfather seeks to re-create itself as a creative-tech hybrid. I am curious to see what the meat on those bones, given the tendency for large companies to use technology at its edges rather than making it a core operational focus. The fact they have now referenced #directoconsumer, #AI, and even #layoffs suggests that they are looking at the right things and understand the difficult challenges for legacy companies to compete in the new era. The fact that David Ellison's father is CEO of Oracle and is part of the deal makes these claims a little more credible. Expect to see more of these #spins as those left reeling from the #streamingwars find their next footing. #innovation

Pride in Asia 🏳️‍🌈 Navigating allyship in most Asian markets is a tricky one - on one hand, you have various religious, political and societal restrictions that make it hard for brands to rally this specific audience openly (last year, Malaysia banned Swatch watches that celebrated LGBTQ rights and made it a a punishable offence for those who owned the watches). On the other hand, you also have Millennials and Gen Zs showing up for each other behind closed doors (back in 2022, when religious authorities raided a Halloween party in Kuala Lumpur and arrested some 20 drag queens & transgender individuals - volunteers offered their legal services pro bono and managed to bail almost all detainees the same night). Which leaves brands in this awkward to-do-or-not-to-do limbo. It helps to understand that queer tolerance in Asia exists on a spectrum (this WARC article is a good place to start: https://lnkd.in/gVq6GpNR) which is to say it's not a lost cause entirely. It also helps for brands (and marketers) to put aside what they think they know and instead, be open to learning how local queers & allies themselves navigate the intersection between identity vs sanctions and where help is needed the most.

Had a great time speaking on the “How Gaming is Revolutionizing Entertainment” panel!  I shared a few proof points (see below) – especially interesting given the uncertainty surrounding theatrical releases, streaming subscriber growth and superhero premieres.  Bottom line:  Players want more of the characters, stories and worlds they love! 🎮 ARCANE / LEAGUE OF LEGENDS – The first entertainment move from Riot Games gave players what they’d been asking for – stories that bring the world to life in ways as compelling and dramatic as the gameplay itself.  Created by two OG Rioters as a love letter to fans, Arcane premiered in 2021 as a Top 10 Netflix series in 87 markets, won Netflix and Riot their 1st animated series Emmy🏆 – and blew away everyone’s expectations. 🎮 THE LAST OF US – The 2023 premiere of this close adaptation of the 2013 narrative game was HBO’s 2nd largest series premiere since 2010, pulling in 4.7 million viewers Day 1 and 40 million viewers in 2 months – and bringing home 8 Emmy wins🏆. 🎮 FIVE NIGHTS AT FREDDY'S – The 2023 day-and-date PG-13 movie release based on the 2014 game brought tweens and tweens to theaters on opening weekend – 81% of the audience was 25 years old or younger, 58% male and 42% female – for a shared fright-night experience that ultimately earned $296 million at the global box office and ranked as the #1 horror movie of the year and #1 Blumhouse release ever🤯.  The over 25 year old crowd opted to stream at home, giving Peacock its #1 viewership and subscriber release to date in the US. 🎮 THE SUPER MARIO BROS. MOVIE – This 2023 theatrical release based on the 1985(!) game drew in a 4-quad audience and grossed $1.3 BILLION at the global box office – the 1st gaming adaption to break $1B at the box office – and ranked as the #1 Illumination movie ever (bigger than Minions and Despicable Me, and erasing the the disappointment of the 1993 Super Mario movie)🤯. 💡My recommendation to entertainment development execs for opportunities beyond console gaming?  Look to Roblox for original IP hits with built-in audiences (and give me a call to help build out a robust 360 global franchise😉). Getting ready for season 3, I binged the 2nd season of 'The Bear' again last week while I was recovering from surgery. Here are 10 cool inspiring life lessons I picked up from it. 1. Every second counts 2. Teamwork, teamwork, teamwork 3. Smudges matter 4. Growth comes through challenge 5. Serving others is a noble calling 6. Put ego aside if you want to be the best 7. Respect is deserved at all levels - 'Yes, Chef!' 8. Your past doesn't define your future 9. We all make mistakes. Own up to them and move on. 10. Every second counts (yes, I put this down twice. It's that important!) The industrywide spending slowdown has led to major streamers improving their returns on content investments. This shift is part of a broader transformation from aggressive content spending for subscriber growth to more cautious spending with a focus on profitability. This change has significantly impacted the content landscape and the financial outcomes of streaming services.

There are 2 parts to every live streamer and content creator: 1. The human off camera 2. The creator on camera It’s obvious so many streamers mask their problems and mental distress from #1 with #2 — they simply don’t want to live #1, and use #2 as a drug fueled by metrics and numbers. Streaming and content creation is a career — it can’t be lived as an escape. It’s the responsibility of managers and agents to make sure #1 is healthy, in order for #2 to be appropriately successful.

📝 How To Maximize Your Entertainment Resume (Part One) 📝 Earlier in the month I did some traveling with my lovely wife and reflected on goals for the next few years. One of those goals was to find a way to support the next generation of creatives, cast, and crew. With that I plan to do more posting here to share knowledge I've gained, experiences I've had, and ways to approach and overcome challenges you may be facing. My hope is that this can be an open dialogue where all those that engage are able to learn, myself included.  With that, let's talk resumes! One of the goals (if not THE goal) of a resume is to tie yourself to success or credibility. It's simply not enough to put the name of a company, your role, and some of the duties you had. This only shows that you were given an opportunity and doesn’t convey what you DID with that opportunity.  Instead include stats outlining the wins and growth you were a part of at said company.   Grew channel subscribers by X over a period of Y Increased team output by X% For project based experience: add links to finals, screeners, or articles written about the projects. Be sure to note any festival screenings or awards the project has received. Outlining the size and scope of the project can also be helpful. Hiring Managers should feel excited after reading about your experience, not confused. Because if they feel confused, they'll move on to the next resume.
