Part 7 of 7: A Journey In Paradox. How does a 19th-century economic paradigm relate to #GenAI? We've explored five intriguing parallels through the lens of Jevons Paradox. As we end this series, it's evident that the paradoxes presented by generative AI are not mere academic curiosities but pressing realities that will shape the future of our global society. #GenAI is not a standalone revolution but an evolution that intersects energy, data, policy, and human ingenuity deeply. The increased efficiency of AI does not simply promise reduced costs and enhanced capabilities; it heralds a potential shift in how we interact with technology, each other, and our planet. 1. Revisiting Consumption: As AI becomes more efficient, its applications expand, leading to greater consumption of resources. This increased demand challenges us to find sustainable ways to fuel this growth without depleting our resources. 2. Democratization and Access: While AI promises to lower barriers and democratize access, it also poses the risk of amplifying disparities if not managed with foresight and equity. Ensuring broad and fair access is paramount to harnessing AI for societal benefit. 3. Environmental Stewardship: The environmental impact of AI is profound. As stewards of our environment, we must advocate for and implement AI solutions that prioritize sustainability, leveraging advancements to reduce, not increase, our demands upon our environment. 4. Ethical Considerations: The societal and ethical implications of AI are perhaps the most complex to navigate. From privacy concerns to misinformation, the way we address these issues will define the ethical landscape of our future society. 5. Employment and Skills: Finally, the impact of AI on employment and skill development is double-edged. While AI displaces some jobs, the paradox biases us to believe new opportunities for those who adapt. The challenge lies in preparing our workforce for these inevitable changes. While the Jevons Paradox provides a valuable framework for understanding the potential impacts of AI, it also compels us to think critically about how we can use these insights to shape a future that leverages AI's power responsibly and inclusively. The journey through this series has not been about finding definitive answers but about sparking a conversation that prepares us to navigate the complexities of a world intertwined with #AI. As we move forward, let us not be daunted by the scale of these challenges because they will happen. We must find a way to balance inspiration at the potential to craft a future that reflects our highest aspirations and deepest values against the recognition to which our biases blind us to our own selfish intents. If we want truly novel intelligence, AI design has to transcend the handful of universal design principles operating in nature, notably the constraints of computational scale and speed. Leveraging AI to navigate the vast landscape of morphological possibilities allows us to step away from the notion of mimicking biological intelligence. The key to transformative innovation in AI lies in shedding biological limitations and embracing new constraints. These could be societal decisions on the extent of human activities replaced by machines, ethical choices about not inducing consciousness in machines, or other values-driven limitations. AI will force us to broaden our view of intelligence. Moving past the idea of simply copying human intelligence, we're stepping into a world where AI could show us entirely new ways of thinking and solving problems. An AI themed extension to the discussion triggered from the post by Melissa Perri on design systems, yet LLMs and GenAI allow product elements to be defined, designed and delivered as reusable patterns, yet the experience within these to be for an 'audience of one". 9 great examples here from Connor Joyce which can help product managers/leaders with a starting point answer to that question from the c-suite/board; "how are we thinking of using AI in our customer and product experience?". Yet also good to think beyond this and how the jobs to be done can be disrupted in a way that reduces friction to a level where automation is the primary state for customers and business, as the great at NOAN are doing with their amazing product suite for brand marketing and all the associated assets/campaigns ... changing the landscape for SMEs and brand marketers alike, not just augmenting it. Now, we know why our PC was cold...it left its Windows open. In Arnold Schwarzenegger's 90s sci-fi film "Total Recall," implanted memories in humans wreaked chaos and havoc. Built into the Windows OS, Microsoft's Copilot, however, aims to use its recall of your past actions on PCs to make your experience smoother. Yeah, Windows is exciting again, but can we keep up? People with photographic memories have always intrigued and irritated me at the same time. To have the unique ability to remember the past in detail and with great accuracy is amazing. Yet, they're also the same people who will never forget a mistake or transgression. In other words, it can be both a gift and a curse. You can reasonably make a similar argument for Microsoft's AI chatbot that will remember everything you’re doing on your computer and help figure out what you want to do next. There's a thin line between being the perfect personal assistant and the noisy, yet trying to helpful know-it-all neighbor. In certain ways, the new Copilot is the evolutionary next step towards turning AI chatbots into AI agents. Think about that for a moment. Current AI chatbots answer our questions and complete writing tasks based on user queries. AI agents, on the other hand, aim to make rational decisions based on their perceptions and data to produce results. The big caveat with a chatbot that has a virtual photographic memory are concerns around privacy and its ability to track everything and anything we do on our devices. Certainly, we deal with some that now with cookies and pixels that collect site and behavioral data. But Copilot's new capabilities go beyond that and essentially create a mirror image of who we are online. In other words, put humans first and AI second. CEO Tom Eggemeier announced the next evolution of Zendesk AI at the company's annual Relate conference. As part of this end-to-end solution, Zendesk has launched "highly sophisticated" AI bots, an Agent copilot offering proactive responses guided by past customer service experiences, a robust workforce engagement management tool, and a QA feature that evaluates 100 percent of all AI interactions. The ability to self-learn and improve from their experiences and surroundings will become integral to robotic systems. This development will empower robots to adjust to new circumstances and respond effectively to environmental changes. ✨ Paradigm Shift in Software Throughout computing history, we have been optimizing how we interact with computers and machines. Traditionally, through programming languages, operating systems, and application software, we've created structured systems designed to perform specific tasks. However, the future of software, enhanced by AI, will shift towards adapting more fluidly to human needs. The state of AI in early 2024: Gen AI adoption spikes and starts to generate value. Recent insights from McKinsey & Company highlight a surge in generative AI adoption across various industries, revealing transformative effects on business operations and strategy. Key Takeaways: - Widespread Adoption: From startups to multinationals, organizations are leveraging AI to innovate and enhance workflows, particularly in sales and marketing. - ROI Generation: Strategic investment in AI is not just about cost savings; it's increasingly about driving revenue growth. - Personal to Professional: The integration of personal AI usage into professional settings is creating new opportunities for efficiency and creativity. In a fireside chat at Sundance Film Festival recently, MIT lecturer Sandra Rodriguez suggested that AI should be rebranded “SALAMI” (Systems Automated Learning and Machine Inference) to make the topic feel less threatening! 🤣   Like all great storytellers, Sandra understands that LEVITY is important, and having a fun anecdote to begin any difficult conversation is always a good idea.   But that’s not just why I posted this short clip.   If you get the chance, you should check out the whole conversation because it could help you to strengthen your own point of view around AI.   The full 80-minute session was titled “Let’s Rebrand Artificial Intelligence”.   It featured 4 documentary film directors who discussed the battle for new ideas between art and AI - and how the words we use to describe a technology can be both POWERFUL and DANGEROUS.   It’s an important conversation for us to have, because whether you’re a business leader, a developer, a consultant or a coach, aren't we all just "commercial artists" who are trying to CREATE something meaningful in one way or another?   If so, maybe we need to think a bit more like artists if we’re going to get the best out of any artificially intelligent model? 🤷🏻‍♂️   Sidenote: One interesting trend I'm seeing at the moment is the increasing demand for people educated in social sciences and liberal arts, rather than computer science. 📈 ⬇️   A few topics discussed in this fascinating conversation from Sundance 2024:   🎨 Why artists need a “disruptive understanding” of how AI works (along with all its biases).   ⏱️ If AI helps with the economy of time and means (an artist’s main revenue stream) then how should artists use AI to improve their craft? And should commercial artists really strive to save time & money anyway?   🧬 Can AI ever be truly creative when it is designed to look for historical patterns that are predictable?   💬 How do you get AI to have a unique voice and not just give you “a bunch of cliches”?   🎙️ Can you train an AI to have a personality? (One example discussed tested GPT-4 by making it a Dolly Parton fan!)   💡 Efficiency is not good for the creative process: AI’s like Netflix’s algorithm are not good if they only show you what you liked last time; because HUMANS NEED SERENDIPITY to be able to continually learn from new people (and ideas) that they might not be familiar with.   Worth a watch.   [Link in the comments]
