  • ASPECT: RATIOS – Voices of Women In the Tall Building World

Council on Tall Building and Urban Habitat

ASPECT: RATIOS is the outgrowth of a program developed by the CTBUH Young
Professionals Committee in New York, beginning in 2016. The purpose of the
lecture series, and of this special edition, is to showcase some of the exemplary
work done by women in the tall building field. The impediments and setbacks

CTBUH invited female colleagues to reflect on their experiences as women in a
variety of roles and disciplines. We provided preliminary questions, but did not
presume what subjects would be of most interest, and thus our invitation was very
open-ended. The responses we received in some cases addressed gender inequality
head-on; in others, colleagues held forth on a subject of personal importance to
them. In all cases, the goal is the same: we want these voices to be heard. With a
greater number of women entering the science and technology field, the
conversation about their contribution to the tall building industry is more relevant
    than ever before.

The AIANY Emerging New York Architects (ENYA) Ideas Competition endeavored to broaden the scope of architectural discourse by posing a design challenge grounded in the context of New York City and encouraging local and international emerging designers to participate. For 2012, The Harlem Edge competition, along with the Department of City Planning’s “Vision 2020: A Comprehensive Waterfront Action Plan for New York City,” sought to increase public access to the city’s waterfront through smart design interventions. Working with Nourishing USA as a programmatic sponsor, the competition brief included both interior and outdoor spaces to anticipate programmatic developments in a growing urban agriculture movement, along with the requirements to physically connect to the adjacent residential community. Entrants were challenged to re-imagine the presently inactive site in light of four criteria: public access to the city waterfront; means by which urban agriculture can be introduced into the community; creative programming and its ability to stimulate economic activity; and sustainability.
