What do you do if your professional relationships are starting to deteriorate?
Sometimes showing appreciation and recognition has more value than a paycheck. Getting the support from management and your peer group means more than a top position in the performance evaluation ranking. Why? Because we are humans and our nature make us crave for appreciation and support. I know I’m not the only one out there. The thing is that not everybody admits it. We all want the money and the promotion. When you work independently as a consultant, you don’t receive a steady paycheck or are evaluated annually to get a salary raise. You are paid for what you do when you finish your project or milestone. But let me tell you… I‘ve got more appreciation and support in the past 18 months than in the past 24 years in corporate America!

What do you do if your professional relationships are starting to deteriorate?
Totally agree! I’m business, everyone has expectations. You, as a goods & service provider, you, as a client or customer. Start with asking what are your expectations, and share yours. Communications is key. The earlier you address and manage expectations from all key stakeholders, the smaller the risk of creating a snowball that eventually will get you. In my work as a consultant, I have proven that not addressing expectations is as bad as staying silent. Companies don’t want to say or do certain things because it will raise expectations. Expectations are always there. You can make a difference by paying attention to them and managing them early on in a given project. Otherwise, the consequences can be very dangerous to your work.

What do you do if your strategic communications campaign involves misleading or deceptive tactics?
Being transparent and accountable is a good way to start any personal and business relationship. Start with showing who you are. No hidden agendas, one face. This will make people trust you little by little. However, you have to feel it. Here, fake it until you make it doesn’t work here. It has to be genuine. People can tell if you are being fake. Accountability is highly appreciated in a team. You want to be a team player that takes responsibility of your actions. If you say you will do something, do it. If you fail or make a mistake, accept and acknowledge it. We are all human. Move on and try you best. Working with me will not be challenging if you are as transparent and accountable as I am.
