Do you ever get the feeling that some recruiters only follow you for their own following metrics and engagement here? There's a staffing agency here in Portland and every job that I've applied to, I get nothing back. Not even a rejection email. Ironically enough, same agency had a Recruiter reach out to me a little over a year ago that basically cut contact almost immediately when I told them my target salary range and went into detail about how my experience justified that. And for the record, it wasn't me whining and crying and being all "rahhh you need to pay me this much 😡😤" it was a simple "Based on my previous 3 roles paying me between X-X, I'm looking for Y at the minimum before I would be struggling financially." Transparency is important in all things be it IT or even our own day to day conversations. If you have no interest in /EVER/ hiring a candidate, don't beat around the bush. Speak your truth.

Failing is frustrating. It's disorienting. It flat-out makes you feel like crap. I failed CompTIA Network+ last night. Missed it by thaaaaat much. Needed at least 80%. Got 74%. Damn if that didn't teach me something real. Still feeling it this morning. But failure isn't the end—it’s the beginning of understanding. It's the bitter taste before savoring sweet success. I've failed more than a few times just getting to where I am now. And I'm still taking IT baby steps. Because in the world of IT, I've learned that failure is a rite of passage. Network+ has been my initiation into the pain of subnetting and the frustration of misconfigured routers. Every bad command, every miscalculated subnet mask, every VLAN I messed up is a lesson worth learning and honing. I'm honestly happy that I scored as well as I did. For that, I'm proud. The path to mastery is rarely a straight line. It’s a series of switchbacks, dead ends, and unexpected detours. My "career" being a good example. So, without further ado, I'm picking myself back up, dusting off, and diving back into the chaos of packets and protocols. All that good stuff. Networking is vast, complex, and endlessly fascinating. And me? I’m just getting started. Here’s to the grind, the struggle, and the relentless pursuit of understanding.

I've received a few messages asking where I've been learning PowerShell. I just wanted to share that I've been learning directly from Microsoft. Their courses -- ranging from beginner to advanced -- cover everything from basic piping to advanced scripting. These free resources have been incredibly helpful, but constant practice and exploring useful cmdlets on your own are key to mastering PowerShell. Warning: It's quite addictive once you get started. I was cleaning up and organizing a few notes this AM and came across a comment I wrote down while working with a member of our sales team on SOC services earlier this year. I don’t do these types of posts often, but when I do, I mean it. People often ask me “Who do you model your leadership after”. My answer is always the same. “There is the one guy…”. That guy is Wolf Noble. I can truly say that when I started modeling my style after Wolf is when my career really started to skyrocket If you're looking for an absolutely fantastic engineering leader who can lead from the front and provide thought leadership for modern-day infrastructure and application deployments from various perspectives (infra, app, cloud, security) Wolf Noble is the human you want on your team. He can protect his reports and inspire them to reach their full potential, while providing a safe place for people to be their true self. I'm a big fan of using the phrase, "x-factor skills" when I talk at CompTIA events. By that phrase, I pretty much mean skills that are either unspoken, or are considered "niche skills." These are the types of "unicorn" skills that hiring managers and others look for in an individual. Does the current state of the economy affect you? It depends. Do you have a stable job? Did you get laid off? Whether or not you have a job is a critical point. In Austin, getting a random job that pays $15/hour is easy. Nearly every supermarket has such jobs, and they offer even good benefits. But is such a job enough to live in Austin? The answer is no, not according to the eviction lab. In Austin, evictions appear in cycles, but a strong uptrend is visible. Currently, we are sitting at +69% above the average. Tesla laid off thousands of employees in Austin, and I am sure many impacted people will lose their homes or experience eviction in the upcoming months. It does not matter where you are but think about the possibility of losing your job long before it happens. - Reduce bad debt and build an emergency fund. - Lower your life standard if you have a negative cash flow. You may get unemployment benefits, but the approval process may take a while. Although the job market appears to be recovering, it will take many more months to return to normal.

Don’t be embarrassed about your server room. I’m talking to small business owners and the IT employees who love working there. The reality for a lot of small businesses and retail locations is that there is no server room. There’s one server on the floor next to the shift manager’s desk, or up on a shelf in a supply closet. One bar that’s a client of mine has the Internet Gateway, the firewall, a switch, and a server in the attic crawl space. I have to climb up a ladder and go through a hatch in the ceiling to get to it. If the business is a little larger and has an in-house IT person, the server room is often still a multi-purpose room that happens to have a couple of racks in it. The Ethernet cables go up and out through a hole in the corner of a ceiling tile in the drop ceiling. Every time I visit one of these locations for the first time, the IT person or business owner apologizes to me and feels like they’re somehow not living up to my expectations. But really, this is pretty normal. Your equipment isn’t generating enough heat to need additional air conditioning. You’re making enough money to run the business and cover payroll every month, but it’s not like you have a safe full of excess cash begging you to spend it on antistatic flooring. So please, relax. Whatever you’ve got, I’ve seen worse. It’s not as bad as you think. (Well, unless you’ve got mouse droppings inside the server case, and rats have chewed the insulation off your Ethernet cables – then you’re getting close to the bottom end of what I’ve had to deal with). I’ll fix what you’ve got so you’re up and running again, and I’ll make some recommendations for ways we can make your network less prone to another failure. It’s your business. Persistence is key in any job search, but so is diversification. When you are starting out in your first career, pivoting from one career to another, or transitioning out of the military, etc., searching for and leveraging available resources is so important to help you get a leg up and differentiate yourself from all of the other hundreds of applicants that are applying blind to different roles they see advertised. You have an entire toolbox at your disposal. Don't limit yourself to just the tools you are most familiar with, find and use the right ones for what you are trying to achieve. Job searching is a full time job in and of itself. It takes dedication and commitment, drive and grit. Don't give up. Just keep on going. I believe in you.
