Dear architects, Artificial Intelligence might save you, if you're open to embracing it. This is an invitation to reach out and hug a robot. My own opinion on the subject has changed a lot lately, perhaps yours will too. Let me explain. I recently posted a job opening for an architect. What I care about is a passion for architecture. Knowledge of materials & building science. Curiosity and an ability to synthesis solutions which blend design intelligence, technical experience, and intuition honed through years of paying attention to buildings and the whole architectural ecosystem. Architecture is complicated, and I'm looking for someone who leans into the complexity. My interest is the applicants knowledge of thresholds, crocking, inverted assemblies, wood species and how they feel. Their favorite manufacturer who elevates the prosaic because they understand that great Architecture is the sum of all the parts. Thinking about this, I scanned through a few job postings from architecture firms, randomly. There was little mention of building science. No prerequisite for chemistry or empathy or a knack for sharp floor plans. Lots of Revit, Sketchup, Rhino, and Lumion. Of COURSE these topics come up in interviews, we DO care. We take for granted that an architect should know these things because we all care about them a lot. We care a lot. Then we go back to being cad monkeys and logging paperwork which assumes we’ll get sued for not stamping an RFI correctly. The reality for many architects today is a profession which spends most of it's time beholden to holding BIM models together with duct tape and filled regions while simultaneously trying to navigate a twelve lane highway of codes, constraints and endless requirements. But it’s not the world changing we signed up for. With the exception of a narrow swath of firms practicing at the periphery, a very narrow swath of firms in a very narrow periphery, we could all use a bit more time. Breathing room to do what we love. I didn't post the job for an architecture firm. I posted for Acelab, the tech company where I work. I get to do more of what I love outside the day to day fray of the profession. I get to help architects all over the country every day. Not one firm at a time, one industry at a time. Seeing the sum of all the tech parts has really opened my eyes to the way that architects are overworked and have become beholden to the technology instead of putting the technology to work. Dear architect, AI is coming for your job. If your job is cad monkey. But if you lean into it, it will bring the joy back into your job. I know that we heard this before with the introduction of Revit and other BIM platforms... but architects never leaned in. Do not create AI managers. This time, lean in. Embrace the change. Hug a robot, then put it to work for you so that you can have time for a coffee break and maybe, just maybe, the joy of architecture. Cheers,

Today, we are faced with intractable problems such as migration, affordable housing, social and racial justice, and the climate crisis.   We’re going to need *all* tools at our disposal, including AI, to help address these issues especially ecological catastrophe. But it doesn't end there. Like participatory designers, we'll also need to augment ourselves with skillsets and mindsets of those who participate in community engagement. Participatory design and community engagement are arguably where we do what we do best (and what AI needs us to do.) Creative cities are known as places for innovation and the growth of creativity, and in fact, the creative city is a favourable environment for training human creativity and attracting the creative class, providing an appropriate foundation for educating its residents' creativity. The aim of this study was to determine the extent to which Tehran's neighbourhoods have the characteristics of a creative city. The descriptive-analytical research method was used for this purpose. Documents are used to collect data in four dimensions: quality of life, human capital, social capital, and innovation. The statistical population of the study was the 22 districts of Tehran, and the research indicators included 28 indicators of the creative city in the form of 7 general dimensions. The data analysis method used was quantitative–qualitative. Using the multi-indicator ELECTRE-II method for ranking areas based on creative city indicators, districts 1 and 6 in Tehran are ranked first, and districts 17, 16, 10, and 9 are ranked last in terms of creativity. Finally, Tehran has the potential to become a creative city, but this requires the removal of existing flaws and obstacles, as well as well-codified and legal planning. https://lnkd.in/g5jnac76

Bringing up the pediatric population and their experiences in design conversations is essential in the healthcare context. Environments that are 'sterile,' 'intimidating,' and 'strange,' when paired with pain, distress, and illness, can potentially traumatize young ones and impact their future visits to healthcare settings. Although this article primarily focuses on general pediatrics, all the strategies discussed may also benefit neurodivergent individuals to some extent, a topic I plan to explore further in my dissertation. #staytuned #Autism #healthcaredesign
