  • HITEC review – three hospitality tech businesses to watch

    Tnooz

HITEC celebrated its 45th birthday this year and its flagship conference, held this year in Toronto, took place a few weeks ago.
While only my sixth year at the conference, I overheard quite a few comments from HITEC regulars that little had changed since the early days: same bland booths, same irritating swag and promotional gifts, same gush around security as the top issue facing CTOs of brand.coms and so on. Sabre confirms job reductions2 DAYS AGO

NB: This is a viewpoint by Greg Abbott, senior vice president of travel and hospitality at DataArt.
But even though the sector still suffers from accusations that it is comfortable with the technological status quo, there were some truly innovative companies on the exhibitor floor that caught my eye.

The hotel industry is experiencing disruption on all sides — virtualization, mobile ubiquity, the explosion of crowd-sourced travel, Internet of Things, distribution. Meanwhile, the bar for great service (which used to be hospitality’s bread-and-butter) is being set by companies outside of the hospitality industry. What Amazon has done with data is changing how consumers expect to make an online purchase, from anywhere. HT’s data suggests that many hotels are throwing financial resources at technology projects, but there’s little clarity about how to measure the ROI or identify where to focus next innovation efforts. In this Keynote Panel, an influential group of technology thought leaders will tackle the disruption that is hitting hospitality on all fronts. We’ll cover findings from the Lodging Technology Study, we’ll hear about several cutting-edge technology projects, and we’ll talk about ways this industry can navigate, and even embrace, disruption in this must-see keynote panel discussion.
