One of the best aspects of my job is the opportunity to be involved in a diverse range of projects — and it's easy to see why. 👀   This 400-acre Lagoon Valley Park project we recently monitored in California is truly one to remember. I don’t often post content like this on my LinkedIn, but I noticed something at a recent event for women in transportation that I think is important to mention.   At the beginning of the program, the president of the organization read the following statistics: The Utah Women & Leadership Project, headed by Dr. Susan Madsen at USU, recently conducted a statistically significant survey among women in Utah. -63% of women disagreed with the statement “Men in Utah are supportive of women becoming leaders.” -Only 28% agreed at some level that men in Utah are engaged in efforts to have more women in leadership roles. -Most respondents disagreed at some level that “there are opportunities and resources available to help Utah men become better allies for women.” While I found these figures important and informative, I could barely hear them.  Each woman who followed to present and accept awards, as well as share well prepared remarks, was at constant odds with a loud buzz of conversation at the back of the room. There, people chatted over cocktail tables and effectively ignored the presentations happening front and center. In the middle of the presentations, the room went noticeably quiet when a man shared a few words after accepting an award on behalf of his company for their efforts in advancing women in transportation. When he concluded, the hum grew back into a roar and again fought with each word projecting from the microphone. The chatter did not subside for the rest of the program -- not even for the keynote speaker. At the beginning of her speech, the well respected engineer pointedly mentioned that the bulk of the men at the event comprised those standing in the back half of the room. Shen then encouraged them to join the audience in front of her. No one took the invitation. I couldn’t help but notice the irony that at an event aimed at uplifting the voices of women, so many people weren't listening, and as a result, the people who wanted to listen were unable to hear. I do think it is important to acknowledge the effort that both women and men made that night to attend that event and show support for the advancement of women in the transportation industry.  I understand these kinds of efforts have played an essential role in getting the industry to where it is today. Though if the statistics prove anything, it’s that there is still a lot of work to do, not only in Utah, but industry wide. Allyship is essential to making a change in industries that have long been lacking in female innovation and leadership. It is imperative that male managers and leaders support women, openly advocate for women, make room for women, and promote women into leadership positions. However, allyship is also in the details, and sometimes the most essential thing an ally can do is be quiet and listen. #womenintransportation #womeninengineering #womeninstem

The 3rd attempt at Rent control is on the ballot in California, along with many other crazy items. (Rent control = not building more housing units) Prop. 33: Rent Control The proposed measure, titled Justice for Renters Act, seeks to repeal the nearly three-decades-old Costa-Hawkins Rental Housing Act, which prevents local governments from setting rent caps on housing built after 1995 and single-family homes. A yes vote means the local governments will have more authority to regulate rental rates and to expand rent control to properties that were previously exempt. This marks the third attempt to implement rent limits in California since the state’s Rental Housing Act’s passage in 1995. THANK YOU for y'alls monumental effort writing letters opposing #AB2580 - a poorly conceived bill that implies preservation constrains housing. The Senate Housing Committee Hearing is tomorrow at 1:30 PM. We hope to see you there. Out of the 8,000 letters we've received, the one from C.C. De Vere is especially poignant: "Preserving California's older buildings for the countless residents who need them is just good common sense... Construction and demolition produce about one-quarter of America's waste, and more than 90 percent of that is from demolition." We especially like the stats: - Of the 35 HPOZs that currently exist, 21 have populations where there is a greater share of racial diversity than in the rest of the city. - As much as 69% of housing in HPOZs has more than one unit, with 39% providing five or more units or apartments. - Between 1999 and 2019, L.A. created over 12,000 new housing units through adaptive reuse of historic buildings.

Why are the largest oldest companies, also the hardest to work with, and or work for? Snail slow payment process. 9 months to 1 year. Tons of bureaucratic red tape. New Project Engineers that don't know anything but respond to emails telling you how to do what you do. Staff telling you what's possible on a project, because they seen it done before on another completely different project. Several attempts to deny payment for services. Not wanting to pay for extra requested work. I am not going to name names but these are very large companies. 1-3 Billion plus a year big!!! They are all the same. Any comments... about your experiences working for very large companies.

I vaguely remember going to visit a dam while I was in college. It was part of a class (can't remember which one). I think that's why this quote from the story stuck out to me while driving to work Wednesday: "There is no university program related to dam design or construction". This is yet another part of our infrastructure with a poor grade (ASCE's 2021 infrastructure report card gave dams a D). Heavier storms, as a result of climate change, are causing even more stress on all of the "old" infrastructure that is already in need of repair. "Shoring up just the ones that could pose a risk to human life would cost $34 billion by one estimate." The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (aka the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law) includes some funding for dam repair and dam safety. In the March elections, the San Francisco voters overwhelmingly approved bringing back Algebra in their middle schools. The voters corrected a flawed, failed experiment that did more harm than good to the middle school students, especially to the advanced students. You don’t lower the bar and call it Math Equity (it’s more like Math Stupidity). The schools should raise the bar for math students and assist those who lack resources for learning, which is REAL Math Equity. https://lnkd.in/gr3smvqs

What happened to transportation equity in this case? We see neighborhoods with multimillion dollar homes, get free (state of art) public transportation services that are greatly needed in low income communities for last minute mile and to replace infrequent buses.

With the City and County of Honolulu planning to spend $2 million to filter, residents are wondering why they chose this location. The residents are concerned the money is being spent to treat less polluted water draining into Kaelepulu Pond. The City and County have come back with a universal concern all authorities face. Yes, we would love to treat the sediment laden runoff, but we do not have the budget for a project that scale. But as the article points out, it is not even the budgetary constraint that are limiting this project. It is the fact that they cannot find individuals to fill the openings on the maintenance crews. #stormwatermanagement #civilengineer
