Garlin Gilchrist II

I advise the college on increasing the admission and graduation rates of students of color. I also contribute to strategies to strengthen the college’s impact on the city of Detroit.

The Corktown Economic Development Corporation is responsible for managing the long-term growth of the neighborhood by engaging the city and state government, as well as the philanthropic community; developing a plan for the neighborhood, and guiding investment toward community priorities.

I specifically drive vision and strategy on AMP’s work on equitable technology and internet access, technical literacy and capacity building, as well as media and technology policy and the municipal, state, and federal level.

I bring my expertise in voting rights advocacy, technology, security, and privacy to this commission that exists to combat any and all efforts to suppress voting rights.

The ALS Center for Excellence, under the leadership of Dr. Eva Feldman, is made up Multidisciplinary ALS Clinic and the Program for Neurology Research & Discovery. The goals of the Center are to improve the quality of life and survival of ALS patients across Michigan, expand Center clinical care, research, and education resources to providers, patients, and caregivers across the state, and be the leaders and best in ALS care in the nation.

The Ford Piquette Avenue Plant is an evolving symbol of Detroit’s ability to invent, innovate, and rebound. I advise the museum on fundraising, capital improvement, and increasing its educational value for young Detroiters.

Advise RISE staff on strategy and curriculum in Michigan, where the first student interventions commence in Winter 2016.

I sit alongside other leaders from Wayne, Oakland, Macomb, and Washtenaw County to leverage your knowledge of the region, personal perspective, and connections in the community to frame thoughtful, solutions based stories about issues facing metro Detroit that Metro Matters can share with the world.

* Provide strategic direction on key initiatives such as the Public Media Corps and NBPC360 projects
* Advise the use of integrated outreach strategies to increase the capacity of Black media makers to independently produce and distribute their works

In this role I help guide YES! Magazine's integrated communications strategy.

I provide insight and training staff members on how to raise awareness, engage audiences, and raise money online.

The Awesome Foundation of Washington DC provides monthly grants to community-focused local projects and organizations that make the lives of DC residents more awesome. More awesome food. More awesome health. More awesome information. More awesome art. More awesome period.

Mission is to amplify the voice of the public in debates over media and telecommunications policies, and build the movement for media change. Our role is to facilitate collaboration and communication among diverse organizations; help build organizational capacity to increase the number of groups working to reform our media landscape; share information and resources; and create opportunities for joint mobilization on key public interest media policies.

I contributed to organizational strategy and planning for this grassroots media justice organization that uses media literacy and access as a pathway to social, economic and political empowerment in low-wealth communities and communities of color.

Co-founded this coalition of Black bloggers and online activists to serve as an online strategy center for technology-infused advocacy impacting people of color.

Primary responsibilities:

* This was the first working group of its kind ever assembled thanks to my foresight and ability to organize activists from diverse locations and backgrounds.
* Developed messaging framework focusing on inclusion, equal protection under the law, and accountability.
* Lead strategy planning for blogging and online activism campaigns such as the Jena 6 (managed blogging priorities for hundreds of participating international Black bloggers) and the Fox News/CBCI Debates (crafted messaging strategy and drove story placement). My strategy led to a number of coalition members being interviewed by major media outlets during our campaigns, including more than a dozen who had never before done media interviews. Show less
