The USPTO's decision in Ex parte Chamberlain (aka In re Xencor) provides some clarity on the PTO’s position on written description and means-plus-function claims in the life sciences. Carefully drafted means-plus-function claims may be a potential path to claim antibodies, etc. functionally. The catch is that the claims would be limited to the examples in the spec and their equivalents (TBD on how much breadth that will get you).
