Sports media is transforming before our very eyes. Last week saw the first round of the NFL draft, and with it, Pat McAfee's 5th Annual Draft Spectacular live streamed on YouTube. Pat drew 2.2 million viewers to his show, peaking at 322k concurrent viewers. The official NFL YouTube stream drew 888k viewers, peaking at around 30k concurrent (h/t Reed Duchscher for the stats) The comment sentiment gives you an insight into then reasons why: - “This was the most entertaining draft coverage I've ever seen in my 30+ years of religiously watching the NFL draft” - “Usually the NFL draft coverage is like watching paint dry til your team picks, but I was absolutely fascinated by every minute of this broadcast” - “This show was soooooooo much better than the actual draft!” Pat and the team craft an experience that is truly optimised for social and engagement. And there is clearly a huge audience who value a product totally different from what they can watch on TV. Personalised, dynamic, fun. The official NFL was something you could see on TV. It looked like an afterthought. With an average of 12m viewers on TV, it’s clear this still dominates eyeballs for the draft, but alternative sister live programming will eat away at this market share over the next 5 years. And this movement will affect EVERY SINGLE SPORT. Rights-holders and broadcasters will do well to try and ensure these are associated products, vs produced independently. Pay attention. Did you know that ABC turned a $500K investment in Disneyland into the #6 show on television and a 15x return on investment? In 1954, Walt Disney and ABC struck a deal that reshaped the entertainment industry. 📺🎡 ABC invested $500K + guaranteed $4.5M in loans for a 35% stake in Disneyland & 10 years of food concession profits. In return, Disney produced the weekly TV series "Walt Disney's Disneyland" to promote the park. 🤝 The impact was immense. ABC went from zero shows in the top 30 to the #6 show within a year. The live broadcast of Disneyland's opening was a major TV event. For Disney, the deal funded his "harebrained" theme park vision while ABC badly needed the audience Walt could draw in. ABC's $500K investment turned into a 15x return when Disney bought their stake in 1961 for $7.5M. EXCLUSIVE!   Over the next several weeks, I’m going to post a few ‘tips’ or maybe ‘pet peeves’ I’ve gathered over now 25 years (I started working behind the scenes at the age of 16) in the broadcast business.   This post is not an EXCLUSIVE but with how many times that word is misused by broadcasters & newspaper writers, I might as well claim it is. Just because this is the only post worded in this manor on this topic, does not make it an EXCLUSIVE.   1. Just because you interview someone 1-on-1 that does not make it in an EXCLUSIVE interview, ESPECIALLY NOT when that same interview subject does a 1-on-1 the same day with 2 other TV stations! That’s simply called a 1-on-1 conversation, which is great and something you should promote if appropriate but it is NOT AN EXCLUSIVE. 2. If you do a story no one else is doing that alone does not make it an EXCLUSIVE. (I’ve seen people claim EXCLUSIVE on stories that NO ONE else is interested in reporting on many times).   SO… what makes something an EXCLUSIVE interview or an EXCLUSIVE story?   Here it is: You are the only one that has the story or interview AND a boatload of journalists are jealous that you did get it and they did not!   So be kind to me journalists… if you are thinking of using the word EXCLUSIVE to promote a story or interview, apply the EXCLUSIVE test to make sure it qualifies.   Let me know what you think. Is Kansas getting ready to compete with neighboring states offering film & TV tax incentives? 👀 Filmmakers are currently urging legislators to pass the Film Tax Credit Bill in Kansas. The bill would create a Film and Digital Media Production program, offering a sales tax exemption and non-refundable tax credits to qualifying production activities in the state. Educational and economic development programs to incentivize and promote the growth of the film production industry in Kansas would also be established. Some details from the proposed bill are: ➖ Program funding of $12 million dollars annually, of which $10 million would be allocated to film & TV tax credits with $2 million funding workforce training & educational funds ➖ 30% transferable tax credit on eligible spend ➖ Potential uplifts available for multi-film deals, television series, high budgeted projects, investing in local infrastructure, and projects hiring 50% or more Kansas residents  ➖ Initial application required The approval of this bill will certainly help Kansas lure film and television productions to their state, in addition to creating more jobs, expanding workforce development in the industry and aid in promoting tourism. Ads are different on podcasts - they work better. Jeff Ulster has an excellent summary of the arguments. Commercial TV has allowed a total ensh*ion of the experience as accountants try to figure out just how much they can push us before we leave the medium (the same goes for commercial radio). Pods have had a different ad culture - and if they stay protected, we are in good shape as an industry. But - the forces of darkness are gathering. I have noticed some of my favourite shows (talking about you Scott Galloway) now have 3 minute or more ad blocks. I used to enjoy his reads on shorter ad stacks, but now I skip them. I'm hooked on the show, so likely some algo will tell his people they could even do more, but at some point, it makes me resent the ads I do hear before hitting the skip button, which undermines the special power of podcast ads. Since pods are great at delivering niche audiences, it makes the case for branded content even stronger. You can gather a few thousand fans a day/week who care about your area of subject expertise and, since they are often spending 20-30 minutes per episode with you, create a different kind of relationship. In short - and I know everyone who works in the medium knows this, but it bears repeating - if you want to form a genuine relationship with your customers, pods are effective. https://lnkd.in/gZhM4J8W

Creating and developing successful sports content for social media is hard, painful and too often a thankless task for the teams involved. Here are a few rules that I set for myself when trying to lead and build social media accounts in every possible platforms while growing a fan base of millions of followers. 1️⃣ Social media is no black magic You won't drive millions of people to subscribe to your offers just by putting links on Twitter. Launching a Twitch Channel won't solve your issue with an aging fan base. It sounds obvious but in too many cases, too much is expected too fast from social media endeavors. You need to play the long game and pace your efforts. 2️⃣ Learn and develop your teams It's Ok to get outside help but it's even more important to develop knowledge and expertise internally. There are tons of great agencies out there to help but social media is an ever changing landscape and you need a solid internal expertise to make the wise choice, even when it's making the proper agency choice. 3️⃣ Branded Content While it's the go to move for many modern pure players, it's still very much underused by more established rights owners and broadcasters. When looking at monetization on social media and/or servicing your partners/sponsors in a proper manner, branded content makes total sense as long as it's content first, brand second, not the other way around. 4️⃣ It's OK to be wrong We all rave about our great success stories on social media, yet, very much like golf (another passion of mine) working with social media is more often learning to deal with failure. You will produce tons of content that will not go viral and that's ok ! Every post, every story will bring you closer to understanding your fans and what they expect from you. 5️⃣ Analytics are not the end of the world We all look at numbers but in most cases we use the numbers that fit our story of achieving success. The Direct Media Lab is the only entertainment technology news media lab in the country. The lab may have the same name, but it's a little different than the others (we call it a strength). We always try to be at the forefront of issues. We ask what we think about an entrepreneurial issue, problem, or social discourse before it happens; It's too suffocating to do in a small organization, but it's also the most meaningful thing you can do to make your presence felt. But it's hard to be at the forefront of the discussion, so you need friends I'm looking for a friend to discuss and cover the entertainment technology space with. The qualifications below are basic, but if I may be so greedy, I'd like to add one more "Together with DirectMediaLab, we will be at the forefront of these discussions." I have observed a significant gap in the representation of roles within the radio industry. While articles often spotlight on-air personalities, program directors, and executives, there is a notable absence of recognition for Creative Directors, Production Directors, Producers, and Engineers. It raises the question - why are these crucial roles overlooked? It is essential to acknowledge the diverse talents and contributions across all facets of the industry, beyond just the perceived "radio stars." #RadioIndustry #RepresentationMatters
