Thomas Robinson is the COO of Domino Data Lab. In a recent article to Forbes, he explains that GenAI may well be the most visible AI category, it actually stands for just 15% of the use cases deployed by his clients (mainly Chief Data and AI Officers). "While GenAI surely takes the innovation and business impact of a company’s combined AI capabilities to a new level, predictive AI remains the workhorse in model-driven businesses." Don't make me feel conservative, I am certainly not saying that GenAI is overrated. I am rather highlighting that all kinds of AI could be managed with a common governance, which is Robinson's statement: "Hype or Harmony". To echo my yesterday's post about maturity models, I agree that gaining maturity in AI is about creating the conditions of an "all-sorts-of-AI" strategy including: - a full operating model leaving space for innovation and test-and-learn, - a collaborative and all inclusive AI platform such as Domino Data Lab's. Blackwell 26,596 times more powerful than our 8 Intel MOSIPS? At Computex 2024, Jensen Huang unveiled the roadmap for Blackwell, promising a future of accelerated computing architectures that redefine our expectations. These advancements are set to elevate AI capabilities to unprecedented levels. Our A7Technology MOSIPS system, powered by 8 Intel NUC computers, delivers 752 GFLOPS, with each system offering 94 GFLOPS. This impressive setup, however, pales in comparison to the capabilities of the new Blackwell B200 GPU. The B200 not only doubles the transistor count of the current H100 but also delivers an astounding 20 petaflops of AI performance from a single GPU, compared to the H100's 4 petaflops. The B200's 192GB of HBM3e memory and 8 TB/s bandwidth are equally impressive, showcasing how scaling is driving AI capabilities to new heights. This leap in performance is a significant phase shift, surpassing the limits of Moore's law and pushing the boundaries of what we thought possible with CPU architectures. To put this in perspective, a single Blackwell B200 GPU's 20 petaflops make it approximately 26,596 times more powerful than our current system's 752 GFLOPS, which uses eight of the latest Intel CPUs. These breakthroughs in parallel architectures are not just incremental improvements; they represent a monumental leap in AI capability and power, setting the stage for the next era of technological advancement.

Gavin Uberti (CEO Etched) is another talented Harvard drop out, who is betting on a silicon model of accelerated compute which only runs transformers. A great (very narrow) strategy which will have a 20x hardware performance advantage over NVidia Blackwell architecture. No details on their software stack strategy, unlikely to match NVIDIA Cuda. HOWEVER, if the industry move on from Transformers as the central tenet of AI models, Etched will be in a very bad place indeed. The threats and risks to NVIDIA investors starting to emerge. If we also consider that NVIDIA is trading at 21 times forward PS ratio, (Microsoft only 11 times) these are risks to the NASDAQ as a whole.
