The negative impacts of Corn Belt fertilizer have been noted for some time. However, the issue is perhaps less that the fields are now better drained than they were in the past, but that farmers are still applying far more nitrogen (at least twice what the plants are taking up). It seems the goal should be to start with a better understanding of how much nitrogen is in the soil already before applying any more. And then perhaps apply smaller amounts as the plants need it. This may require more time for the farmer, and produce more GHG emissions for the tractors, but it would be interesting to see what the net GHG emissions would be for another tractor pass vs. less nitrogen use. A more expensive way would be to install a water treatment plant on the Raccoon River and charge a few dollars to each farmer based on their total nitrogen and ammonia inputs each year to cover the costs. This is part of a long list of impacts of Corn Belt production on the Gulf of Mexico. This has been going on far too long and it needs to be fixed.

Every time it rains, it takes nitrogen with it. Now is the time to be vigilant in monitoring how often fields are saturated with water. A rule of thumb is that you are losing 3-4% of the preplant nitrogen already applied every day your fields are saturated. Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR) media are used in various wastewater treatment applications. The MBBR process utilizes floating plastic carriers (media) within a reactor to provide a large surface area for biofilm growth, enhancing the degradation of pollutants. Is Brazil Maximizing Its Irrigation Potential? We were recently cited in a Portal Agrolink article discussing the importance of irrigation for modern agriculture. It is crucial for boosting yields and ensuring food security. However, Brazil faces some key challenges: high implementation and maintenance costs, water scarcity (especially in the Northeast and Center-West), inadequate infrastructure with insufficient transport channels and reservoirs, complicated licensing processes, and a shortage of skilled labor in rural areas. Despite these challenges, Tiago Piassum Theodoro and Cristiano Aguiar de Oliveira highlight significant opportunities. Annual returns on investment in irrigation range from 15% to 50%, making it a highly lucrative venture. Government initiatives like the National Irrigation Plan aim to support this growth. Moreover, private credit can reduce bureaucracy and facilitate quicker project implementation. Investing in irrigation is essential for the sustainable growth of Brazilian agriculture.
