“Job security is always there. But job quality is not.” This was the top answer from a Structural Engineer when asked about the job market. They're absolutely right. I cannot think of a better time in history to be a structural engineer. If someone disagrees with me, please let me know in the comments. Salaries are up. Demand for work is up. And I’m seeing a lot of firms hiring. If you don’t like your job, just answer one of the 50 DMs in your inbox from Engineering Recruiters (it’s cool if you want to start with mine first 😂 ). So what do you do if you're a manager at a firm that needs engineers? Here’s what I would be thinking about: 1) Invest in your current team (salaries, benefits, career growth, education, mentorship, company culture, etc). Finding replacements now is harder than ever and will take longer than you think. 2) Dial in your company’s branding (website, socials, etc.). More than ever candidates are looking to socials to help them answer what it is like to work there. 3) Use all available channels to find candidates. Recruiters, network, website, referrals. Always be networking. 4) Invest in an internship program if you haven’t already. Interns often become future employees. They may also refer other engineers to you. 5) Consider automation and outsourcing. What repeatable tasks can be taken away from your engineers so they can spend more time on important projects? Attention Civil Engineers: This is a desperate plea to ask that we definitely sharpen our social perceptiveness skills, because social perceptiveness is the number one most recession-proof skill. We failed to make the “150 best recession-proof jobs” list. The lead Fresno County Traffic Engineer bills out at a measley $125/hr vs. $450/hr by a typical Lawyer in that same county. I have 4 PE licenses in 3 states. I have more than a quarter century of experience. I got the ASCE awards for outstanding leader and outstanding engineer in legislative activities. I have experienced numerous layoffs and prolonged periods of unemployment. Guess what? I live in a trailer part. It’s our profession’s inadequacies in social perceptiveness that causes these challenges. Therefore let’s sharpen our social n perceptiveness skills. Thank you.

Happy to share that our second article on Coating Performance Evaluation, entitled "Leveraging Bridge and Environmental Features to Analyze Coating Conditions of Steel Bridges in Florida Using Neural Network Models," was published in the Journal of Performance of Constructed Facilities, © ASCE. Thanks to Dr. Lu Zhang for giving me directions and the opportunity to work under her. In this work, we proposed an explainable artificial neural network model utilizing the SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) approach to predict and assess the coating conditions of girder elements of steel bridges in Florida. In addition, we leveraged the data on both bridge-related features and environmental features (e.g., chloride, moisture, atmospheric pollutant, and temperature) to understand steel bridge coating deterioration patterns and how the service environments of bridges may impact such patterns. Have you ever wondered why a boom is shaped the way it is? Any beam, whether it be an I-beam or a hollow section of some type, can potentially suffer from a failure mechanism known as buckling. If you're not familiar with buckling, it is a nonlinear, catastrophic, and instantaneous failure that can occur, often at stresses below the actual yield strength of the material. Many university programs cover column buckling in compression quite extensively but fail to touch heavily on flange or web buckling of beams in bending. There are many calculations available to help determine whether buckling is i)the primary failure mechanism, ii) may be a failure mechanism, or, iii) is not a concern, and most likely, the yield strength of the material will be exceeded before buckling becomes an issue. The thinner the plate and the wider or taller the “flat” section is, the higher the risk for buckling. By including alternative features to a hollow section, such as formed or rolled bottom plates (often called a keel plate if it has a sharp bend or bends in the plate), the flat width that is considered for buckling is reduced, and a thinner plate may be utilized. It’s the same reason that on many big crane booms, you see a rolled bottom plate, sometimes with almost no flat section at all. This helps reduce the potential for catastrophic buckling while minimizing the need for even thicker sections. Of course, there are substantial added costs for manufacturing and often more complexity for wear pads. So, next time you look at a telescopic boom, you might notice that plates have different thicknesses, bends, or radii and it could be that there is a lot more to it than just an appealing look! In the figures below, you’ll see two booms with identical weight, moment of inertia, and loading. The only difference is one boom has a keel bottom. Investigating the effect of date palm fibers on the mechanical properties of self-compacting concrete Amir Hossein Derakhshan Nezhad mahbobeh mirzaie Aliabadi Mohamad sadegh Shahidzade Alireza Dadpour Abstract Behbahan city, located in Khuzestan province, is one of the hot and dry regions of Iran, which has palm groves. In this research, considering the date palm groves in Behbahan, the idea of using date fibers with a length of 3 cm in the mixing plan of self-compacting concrete as a natural, economical and accessible additive was investigated. In the design of self-compacting concrete mixture with date palm fibers, nano silica was used to increase strength, strengthen the transition zone (third phase) and viscosity modifier was used to control rheological properties. Fresh and hardened properties of self-compacting concrete samples with and without palm fibers through slump flow, V funnel, L box, J ring, U box and compressive strength, tensile strength, ultrasonic pulse speed, Schmidt hammer, temperature effect on concrete , permeability was evaluated. The results showed that the increase of date fibers with different percentages (0, 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2% compared to the weight of cement) in self-compacting concrete during 28 days of processing led to an increase in tensile strength from 13.67- 22.67. percent, reduction of permeability from 52.15-15.88 percent, reduction of crack width in concrete slab from 99.9975 - 81.71, reduction of compressive strength from 4.11-22.47 percent, reduction of compressive strength with Schmidt hammer from 04 26.37-5.04% and reduction of ultrasonic pulse speed is 23.05-4.56%. https://lnkd.in/dTRcs-HA

Attention Structural, Offshore, and Civil Engineers The traditional one-third stress increase, a staple in Allowable Stress Design (ASD), is being phased out according to the latest ASCE/SEI standards. This alteration, reflected in the recent modifications to ASCE 7 and the AISC ASD Specification, marks a significant shift in design methodology.Historically, the one-third stress increase served to accommodate the unlikely scenario of multiple transient loads reaching their maximum values simultaneously. However, with evolving standards and a deeper understanding of load dynamics, this approach is being reevaluated. The latest provisions emphasize load combinations that accurately amplify transient loads while maintaining conservatism. Nevertheless,engineering judgment plays a crucial role in navigating these changes, as not all load combinations are explicitly outlined in the standards. Designers must exercise discretion to identify potential scenarios where unfavorable effects may arise. In conclusion, current ASD load combinations, as specified by leading model building codes, effectively achieve load amplification objectives. The redundant application of the one-third stress increase alongside reduced ASD load combinations is discouraged, as it violates code requirements and compromises structural integrity. To stay updated of these developments, familiarity with SEI/ASCE 7-02, the cornerstone of modern building codes, is essential. Ice Production in the Time of the Persian Empire in the Desert: The Yakhchal or "Ice Pit" is an architectural method used to produce ice and preserve food. The Persians were already making tons of ice and freezing food in the desert 2,400 years ago. 1- Structure Design: The Yakchals had a dome shape with thick walls made of bricks and clay. This construction helped maintain a cool temperature inside the vault. 2- Water collection: during the winter water was collected from rivers or from the melting of the mountains. This water found its way to the Yakchals through canals. 3- Freezing process: The water was distributed into small ponds or pools inside the vault. During the night and in the coldest hours of the day, the water froze due to the low desert temperatures at night. 4- Ice storage: Once frozen, the ice is cut into blocks and stored in the lowest part of the Yakchal, where the temperature was coldest. The dome shape and natural insulation of the walls helped keep the ice frozen for many months. 5- Later use: During the summer, stored ice was used to cool drinks, preserve food or even for medical purposes if necessary. In short, the Yakchal took advantage of the natural cold of desert nights to create and preserve ice, using simple but effective storage and thermal insulation techniques.
