📌EARLY PR Release Statement on Fearless Fund Lawsuit Outcome 📌 EARLY PR is disappointed in the federal appeals court’s recent decision to block the Fearless Fund from completing its mission of solving funding inequity for black and brown female founders. The decision is a deliberate attack on the progress of racial equity and justice and disregards the unique challenges Black women encounter in business. By blocking this grant, the court attempts to deny Black women equitable access to contribute to economic growth and innovation. Black women are the fastest-growing demographic of entrepreneurs. Yet, receive less than 1% of venture funding. Supporting Black women's businesses is an economic imperative that drives community development and job creation. EARLY PR is proud to be one of the many who will continue to champion marginalized business owners committed to building an equitable society, not unlike ourselves. These values are reflected structurally in every aspect of our business. Each month, we highlight small businesses in our newsletter, continuously speak up about injustice across our social platforms and offer discounter consulting services to brown and black business owners. Not to mention, our entire scope of client work also reflects these values. As a Black-woman-owned business, EARLY PR understands the struggle of racial and gender bias Black women experience and the difficulty of getting business recognition as a minority-owned business. Despite this setback for our shared communities, EARLY PR remains resolute. We will continue to advocate for equitable funding and recognition for all women, LGBTQ+, and marginalized business owners. When I listen to a podcast episode, it's always with a few filters, including: -what can I learn about the topic as presented? -what connections can I find to my current context (in Iraq)? -what can I bring forward into my life, learning, practice(s)? In the latest System Catalysts podcast episode, with Ashley Bell and Brandon Comer of the National Black Bank Foundation, I learned a lot about America's racial wealth gap. I learned more about redlining and the impact it still has. And best of all, I learned how investing in Black-owned banks can help close that gap—to the benefit of everyone. (And their collaborative approach can be borrowed for any context—where delivering value for all is at the center of the work.) Now, it was hard to listen to a discussion about redlining, and not think about Iraq. For my Iraqi colleagues, redlining was a racist banking practice in the United States. Banks pulled out maps and literally drew red lines around neighbourhoods where minority residents lived and decided that residents inside those red lines couldn't access banking. They couldn't get loans to buy a house or start a business. Things work very differently here in Iraq, but I think you immediately understand the impact of making basic services inaccessible to minority groups. So what made me think of my context in Iraq? My Iraqi colleagues can't access PayPal or Amazon. They can't buy licensed software like Photoshop. They can't access so many of the platforms that would allow them to freely work digitally. The internet is full of glam IG accounts with "digital nomads" working wherever they choose, yet my colleagues can't work that way at home. The context is different, but functionally, Iraqi professionals experience another version of redlining. The folks behind the National Black Bank Foundation knew that they had to create their own system of equity. What could it look like for Iraqis to have financial equity and full digital access to the outside world?

To address the root causes of problems facing children and youth, Global Fund for Children grassroots partners in the ARC initiative are learning how to listen to each other, themselves, and their communities. Supported by WE Trust and Seamont Foundation, ARC is currently centered on enabling stronger community- and youth-led action in Bangladesh, India, and Nepal. In the past, the ARC partners have worked on a variety of child-focused issues, often in line with the priorities of funders or their own organizational goals. Now the community, including children and youth, will decide what direction these partners take. This is community-owned action in practice. We Alokito Kori are proud partners in Bangladesh currently working on the CLCP approach encourages communities to take ownership of the challenges they face and to design, implement, and assess a response to these challenges.

📚 Yesterday morning, I attended the launch of a new joint report between the Black Equity Organisation and the Fawcett Society and, as my colleagues at Stand can attest to, I came back to the office brimming with the insights from the report, raving about the discussion by the incredible panellists, and the feeling of a need to do more to create the change we need to see. The report looks into education, policing, and mental health services in the UK, drawing out the similar harms caused across these different public services. Throughout the work, four key themes emerged: ❗Excessive force and detention ❗Adultification and ‘the strong Black woman’ trope ❗The erasure and invisibility of Black women’s experiences ❗A ‘one size fits all’ approach to public service The report has found that, "too often Black women are treated excessively harshly, not listened to, assumed to possess a higher threshold of resilience, and their stories are either missing or downplayed in data, research, and institutional reviews." I would strongly urge everyone to read this crucial report, to reflect on what more they can be doing to advocate for Black women, and work to create the change needed. Also, a huge shout out to the panellists, Nikki Adebiyi, Aisha Sanusi, Dr Alison Heydari PhD, Danielle Bridge, and Paris Williams, who were led by Timi Okuwa in an insightful discussion. The Solutions Project has elevated an underfunded network of hundreds of organizations into a nationwide grassroots infrastructure for climate justice. Through grantee communications capacity-building, technical assistance, and amplification partnerships with influencers, media, and brands, we disrupt climate “doom and gloom” or victimhood storylines with narratives of hope, joy, and community self-determination. When philanthropy follows through on equity commitments, frontline communities can scale their innovations, benefiting people and the planet. In 2023 alone, our mission to fund and amplify grassroots climate justice solutions meant: ✅ Over 23 million people benefited from The Solutions Project grantee policy achievements, including cleaner energy, water and air. ✅ $16 million was awarded to 127 core grantee partners  and 119 additional grantees through the collaborative ecosystem funds we administer  ✅ 13 billion views estimated in press/online coverage for The Solutions Project and grantee partners whose capacity we strengthened Philanthropy cannot afford to backtrack when so much is at stake, especially for most impacted communities of color. Maryland's Enough Act strategy has the potential to make a significant impact in ending child poverty worldwide, and if adopted by other global leaders, it could bring about substantial change. The essence of this strategy lies in addressing poverty at its core. By uprooting poverty from its roots, we can effectively eradicate it. If world leaders implement this strategy in the poorest communities, we can expect to see remarkable progress. Children in Africa, for example, would have access to essential resources such as : #education #healthcare #cleanwater #food #shelter #socialservices When every child has access to these basic necessities, they are given the opportunity to break free from the shackles of poverty. It is crucial for world leaders to recognize the potential of the Maryland Enough Act strategy and take action. Juneteenth commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans and serves as a powerful reminder of the long struggle for freedom and equality in the United States. This historic day provides an opportunity to reflect on the ongoing issues of systemic racism and social justice, including the current state of mass incarceration. By acknowledging Juneteenth, we can foster a deeper understanding of how historical injustice, such as slavery and segregation, have evolved into modern-day disparities within the criminal justice system. This awareness can drive meaningful discussions and policy changes aimed at addressing racial biases, reducing incarceration rates, and promoting rehabilitation and reintegration of formerly incarcerated individuals. Ultimately, Juneteenth can inspire collective action towards building a more equitable and just society.
