After years away from LinkedIn, I'm breaking my silence to share something deeply personal and professionally exciting. Many of you know me from my decade+-long work producing the Digital Health Summit at CES. But life had other plans for me. Like many, my world flipped in 2020. As a single mom navigating virtual kindergarten and a career, I felt like I was constantly running on a treadmill set too fast. By 2021, my son, Brody, was struggling with severe anxiety and meltdowns. I made the gut-wrenching decision to pause my career to focus on him. But my journey began much earlier. A week after bringing Brody home, I was thrust into an unexpected, relentless challenge. For years I was in the trenches, experimenting and crafting solutions to help my child's HUGE emotions. The usual parenting playbooks didn't work. It was insanely hard and isolating, feeling lost and scared that I might not be the right person for this extraordinary child. It was soul-crushing. I realized that raising Brody required a completely different approach, one I had to build from scratch through experimentation and intuition. Through years of tears, struggles, and relentless determination, I discovered Brody is a Highly Sensitive Child. This revelation validated the unique approach I'd discovered. I came to appreciate just how special these children are - their depth of processing, emotional intensity, and sensory awareness are truly remarkable gifts when understood and nurtured properly. Chatting with other moms, I've realized my story isn't unique, but the lack of support is staggering. So, I'm doing what I do best - I've convened a remarkable group of experts for the ⭐ Raising Highly Sensitive Kids Summit ⭐ happening this week. A new term I've been toying with: "Health AND Equity" vs. "Health Equity." I was on a community nonprofit tour awhile back, and the folks I was chatting with (who were big philanthropic donors) didn't immediately resonate with the term "health equity." I didn't expect them to, not coming from public health or healthcare, but it was interesting to see fierce supporters of upstream service/community providers addressing homelessness, poverty, food insecurity, etc., not immediately making the connection to downstream health and healthcare. I explained the connections, both upstream and health-related social needs, but it got me thinking. Could this represent a broader gap in awareness in the public? If so, it is one that those of us working in any of these spaces can address through our messaging and advocacy, but more importantly: pooling resources and working together for systemic change that advances health AND equity. And health equity :) What do you see in your region? Similar disconnect or no? I am thrilled to announce that INVI MindHealth has successfully closed a $1.5 million Series Seed funding round! This investment is a significant milestone in our mission to transform mental health care. The funds will help us enhance the INVI MindHealth app, integrating expert content on a range of mental health topics and solutions. We'll also be developing "Overwatch," a robust dashboard tool to help leaders monitor and support their teams' wellbeing. INVI MindHealth was born from personal loss and a deep commitment to change. After losing multiple SEAL Team teammates to suicide, I realized the urgent need for innovative mental health solutions. This funding will accelerate our efforts to create a platform that uses predictive analytics, biometrics, and AI to support those in high-stress professions and beyond. We're already partnering with first responders and government agencies, like a Los Angeles-based Special Tactics Team, to provide crucial mental health support. We're also conducting groundbreaking research with a leading university in Texas on psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy for veterans with PTSD. ❤️Worried about AI taking jobs or societal collapse? Besides building new cities and new tech, or Mars escape plans, there are other things we can do, too: like helping humans heal our souls and raise our collective consciousness. 📝Here is one way: do you have a healing gift? A therapy license? A MSW? Have you considered training to become a practitioner for PAT (psychedelic assisted therapy)? There aren’t enough trained medical professionals for the job and it isn’t practical / cost effective. Regulators are actively trying to figure out besides medical doctors, who else can be trained to do this job. As we know, in ancient healing arts, not everyone can be a shaman, for healing the soul is as sacred, if not more than healing the body. But the call is strong for those that are, so you would know. If you already offer your couch 🛋️ and support for friends going on psychedelic trips recreationally at parties and festivals, you probably have a healing gift for this to explore. 🎙️Learned about this from an Uncommon Core lecture at Uchicago alum weekend. The talk was fantastic. The speaker had much wisdom and experience. She really gets it. 📚A very timely free resource for healing practitioners interested in training in psychedelic assisted therapy (PAT), more systematically. As we move into healing of the last frontier of human health: the brain, as the United States prepares for legalization of psychedelics, and as western societies and modern sciences in general collaborate deeper with ancient healing medicines and spiritual arts in this new era, there will be such overwhelming need and shortage of care professionals to support people through these journeys (literal journeys). There is already so much need today, in our fragmented and polarized society. World peace and human flourishing might just depend on it. 💖 Do you hear the call to practice healing? Over the last 60 days I have had a few dozen conversations with leaders at both early and late stage healthcare companies, ranging from seed stage to venture to PE-backed. A number of them are trying to solve similar problems in 5 key areas (see below) In order to have a more scalable way to discuss these issues I have created a LinkedIn group called “Building and Scaling Healthcare Startups”. https://lnkd.in/gE82zAXN. This community is intended for relevant healthcare leaders - Founders, CEOs, COOs, CROs / VPs of sales, CMOs, Ops leaders and their teams - to connect with peers and get practical guidance, and possible connections to the right folks on issues like: 1. Product (and Implementation) Market Fit: - How / when do we know if we have Product (and implementation) market fit? - How do we organize PM / Engg / Data Science and Client Services to work best together? - ROI / Defensibility of the Business Case: How do health systems look at ROI? -How do we build and present a defensible business case? - Can we “outsource” change management? - The “Epic will do this” question. 2. GTM investment and Operations: - How do we transition from founder-led sales to more scalable sales? - What is the role of marketing? - How do we price our solutions? - What tools / GTM tech stack works best. - How do we create the right org “molecules” - prod mktg / demand gen / content/ PR; SME / BDR / AE. - How we onboard and train team members for all the above. 3. Culture: - How do we establish the cultural norms and tenets important to us? How do we hire for them? - Build accountability and ownership? Find “owners” vs. “zoo fed lions” 4. Operations: - How do we organize ourselves overall? - How do we execute on key processes needed to scale e.g new feature / product launch, quote to cash etc. 5. How can get intros to the right investors, health systems etc. Building companies is hard and often lonely. So as we all try and solve the same sets of issues in various contexts, perhaps a community might help. In the short term, if we can identify common topics we can schedule live sessions and other potential virtual / in person meetups on. If there is interest we could extend the group to include investors and health systems as well. "The Power of One: Interrupting Systems of Harm through Small, Everyday Actions" Thrilled to be sharing TWO presentations that are both very close to my heart at this year's Redefining Crazy Conference: It's the System, Not the People hosted by the Mental Health Association of San Francisco. https://lnkd.in/gYESS5VD When we think about what it will take to create the just and loving world we long for, it's easy to get overwhelmed. Navigating systems - whether the systems of harm and domination we want to dismantle or the systems of care and liberation we want to build - can feel daunting and it’s hard to know where to start. How can we plug in? What can one person do and will it ever be enough? What we often forget is that even the most vast, and long-standing systems are either upheld or interrupted by the everyday actions of ordinary people. Every action - no matter its size - makes a HUGE difference to the person, the community that needed it. Every day we make choices - either to go along with the status quo or to begin breathing another way of being together into daily life - and our choices have POWER. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., said that the arc of the moral universe “bends toward justice” and Jon Stewart added recently that “it doesn’t bend by gravity, you have to bend it, and right now, there’s a bunch of people trying to bend it back.”  There is a highly-focused, massive-scale effort underway in this country (across party lines and in the Supreme Court) to bend our moral arc AWAY from justice, away from ensuring the safety, well-being, and fundamental human rights for ALL people. The stakes could not be higher. We cannot look away and we can’t do this work alone. Even still, we each have more power than we realize and we can start using it to reshape our world in tiny, yet mighty ways… TODAY. In this workshop, we’ll take a look at how systems of oppression impact each of us at 4 different levels - at the individual level, interpersonal, institutional, and ideological levels - based on the intersecting dimensions of our many social identities and our everyday, lived experiences. Using these 4 levels as a guide, participants will begin to personalize a path of daily, sustainable actions that promote healing, wellness, and getting free at each of the levels we experience harm…

It was great to chat with Jen Libby, MSW, LCSW, founder/CEO, Promly and Danielle Dick, cofounder, Thrive Genetics, Inc., author, The Child Code, about mental health innovations and opportunities. *Links to full convo in comments We discussed a few things including: 1. Their career journeys 2. Trends, challenges and opportunities in #health Jennifer Libby has been a psychotherapist for over 20 years treating at-risk adolescents. She has been sounding the alarm for many years about the rapidly emerging youth mental health crisis exacerbated by less than responsible social media platforms. Frustrated by the slow movement by the social media industry to “do better” for kids, and in response to her own family tragedy, Jennifer founded Promly as a healthier alternative to legacy social media. Jennifer’s advocacy for better treatment of youth by Big Tech was well received recently in Washington, D.C. where she spoke to a large group of U.S. House Representatives regarding her on-going efforts (informed by client experience and Promly’s Gen Z advisory board) to have YouTube remove and/or disrupt the algorithm for the “how to tie a noose” and “how to hang yourself” videos that provide step by step video instructions often created by teens themselves. Of note, suicide by hanging in children and teens has increased by exponential numbers in the last 10 years. It is examples like this that drive Promly to re-imagine how social media can “do better” for teens. Jennifer also speaks publicly on a variety of other mental health concerns impacting teens and has provided consultation with numerous agencies including Center for Humane Tech (producers of the “The Social Dilemma”) on best practices for teens and tech.  --- Danielle Dick, Ph.D. is the Greg Brown Endowed Chair of Neuroscience and a Professor of Psychiatry at Rutgers University, where she directs the Rutgers Addiction Research Center. She is an internationally recognized and award-winning expert on genetic and environmental influences on addiction, child development, and human behavior. She has led and contributed to more than 20 grants from the National Institutes of Health, with grant funding totaling 55 million dollars. She has 450 peer-reviewed publications and has won numerous national and international awards for her work. She has been named one of the most highly cited researchers in the world across all fields of science. Check out my latest podcast with the Global Healthy Living Foundation. Thanks to my longtime health care policy and advocacy colleagues Robert Popovian and Seth D. Ginsberg for allowing me to do this! We have so much opportunity to improve our health care system on many levels. We all know that. I am very focused on #sustainablemedicine. What does that mean? Health care that is efficient and can sustain itself. Health care delivery that ensures the patient is first and we avoid wasting resources, materials, time, energy and confusion to ensure optimal and sustainable medical care. Health care is so siloed. While my health care team is incredible, as my medical conditions became more complex before my kidney transplant (one year ago in two days) so many more people were involved and I was left thinking- who is on first for me? Who makes the right decisions for me or advises my husband and family when I cannot? I was reminded of this again when my dad had a heart attack one week ago. Thankfully he did amazing and is home and back cooking and doing his normal activities (amazing!) But, he waited almost two days for a cardiac cath. Two days waiting is horrible when you don't know your diagnosis, but so is the wasted time, medical care, efficiency, and other unnecessary costs that could have been avoided.. had there been enough staff and connectivity to get his treatment done within at least a few hours after he was admitted with a heart attack happening during admission! The patient should be our purpose- for ANYONE in medicine. And our health care system- from the care provided, to the associations that drive patient outcomes, need to be sustainable. Smart planning. With a swiftly-completed clinical trial, the team at Teal Health has brought the idea of simple, at-home testing for #cervicalcancer one step closer to reality. This will be another critical tool in the fight against this disease. The HPV vaccine, now often given to teenage girls, has reduced incidence - but it came out just 18 years ago and the average age for the onset of this deadly disease is 45. This is yet another bright spot for #womenshealth in 2024 (what a year this is shaping up to be!) and a terrific use of the FDA breakthrough status designation. And can I just point out that this is another innovation for PWBs (persons with boobs) brought forward by a #femalefounder?

If you use AI to write copy or generate an image, I believe that should be disclosed in the same way you would disclose that you have used stock images. This is not about what performs better, this is about honesty. It's not a long vs. short copy test or whether sad vs. happy images work better. In those cases, the donor responds to something they see and which matches their expectations. The short and long copy have been written by a thinking human which is what the donor expects. The donor will understand that in many cases, the letter has been written by someone else on behalf of the CEO. The images, whether happy or sad, whether of actual beneficiaries or stock, were taken of real people. So if you use AI to do that job without telling the donor, you are messing with the donor's expectations ie. you are essentially lying to the donor. It's already hard to build trust with donors - if you're going to do it, just be honest and disclose. BUT happy to hear other views on this. I would also like to see further tests in a context in which donors better understand the reasons why a charity may use AI. Will they respond better if they truly understand there are good reasons? Or will it be one of those situations where they SAY they want charities to save money/ protect privacy/ reduce trauma but their actual donor behaviour shows they respond better to real images and copy written by a human?

12 months ago I was frustrated as a clinician, with the systems I was working in and the dissonance I felt with my potential and my professional life. In these moments, an email from Creative Careers in Medicine popped into my inbox and I applied for the Australian Clinical Entrepreneur Program (AUSCEP). I would never have predicted what would have ensued over the next 12 months. I got accepted into the program and had nothing to bring except for a ferocious hunger and curiosity to learn. For context, I thought VC stood for vice captain. I’d like to reassure everyone that I have successfully redefined this abbreviation for myself. It’s taken a HUGE 12 months but here is what that adventure looks like: - 188 one to one conversations >30 mins with different people  (yes, I counted) - 103 startup events or training days attended - Expanded network to 989 genuine connections and 1138 followers from a starting point 308 connections - Went through Startmate's Product Management 101 (S23) with Harry Hamilton where our team took out the trophy for the Hackathon - Went through Business Fundamentals and the Software as a Medical Device Specialisation as part of Cicada Innovations' NSW Commercialisation Training  - Went through ANDHealth's BRIGHT: Innovate  - Went through Blackbird Giants (C6) - Going through the CSIRO's Innovate to Grow  - Learnt how to earn the right to exist at the venture-backed Eucalyptus - Pitched at Fishburners x Microsoft for Startups Health Tech Pitch Night - Got thin sliced by Carlo Bellini and A/B tested the high growth startup vs. founder path - Grew closer to my wife and two kids, built then moved into a new home - Shared the vision with family, obtained buy-in from them and iterated family operations over 3-6 months to carve out a 70 hour work (play) week - Rediscovered my why and found intense clarity and conviction - Made a subsequent leap of faith from full time clinician to founder pursuing my life’s work - And most recently flew to an undisclosed location on a private jet If you’re curious, 10 of us from AUSCEP are showcasing what we’re building. 225 people registered already and I’d love for you to be there.  📅 Date: Wednesday, 23rd August 2023 ⏰ Time: 7:00pm - 8:30pm AEST 📍 Venue: Virtual
