Utilize this tactic to make sure patients fill out 100% of their paperwork... Getting patients to complete paperwork is a big challenge... here's how to make it easier. Flip the script. Instead of telling patients "We need you to fill out this paperwork" let them know that the paperwork is crucial to them receiving the proper care. "So we can deliver the proper care and help you feel better, please fill out this paperwork" It's a simple, but important change. Patients need to understand WHY they're filling out the paperwork. Basing your whole healthcare practice on only seeing patients with health insurance seems like a safe bet. It unlocks giant pools of patients for you to see. Seeing a lot of patients means that you have a successful practice, right? Wrong. That used to be the case when health insurance companies didn't require an army of staff for revenue cycle management, and they paid more. A few decades ago you could open your own practice, take insurance, it would get filled, and it would be financially stable. Now, only taking patients with health insurance will certainly make you busy, but it will also make you fail. If not now, then eventually. There are two reasons for this: 1. You can't control your overhead, and it always goes up. Controlling overhead is necessary for any business. Health insurance companies make you hire an army of staff to successfully bill. The HR costs alone are daunting and are only going up. 2. You can't control what you get paid. Another aspect you need for business solvency is to be able to set your prices. Health insurance companies dictate what you get paid, and it of course goes down over time as well. The combination of not controlling your overhead or your prices will lead even the best run practice to ruin. A health insurance based practice will be a busy practice that will eventually fail. The solution is to start looking elsewhere for payments.

Feature requests to improve the patient side of things often go unanswered or pushed onto next year’s roadmap. You don’t have to wait. You can start improving the patient experience and touch points while your EMR keeps doing what it’s doing. As a visual learner, I know the power of a picture. And it turns out, it can be a game-changer for treatment plan close rates. After speaking with numerous practices, I've yet to hear one say their rate is sufficient. That's where technology comes in. Appreciate the callout of our model in the post Christina Farr and Rebecca Mitchell, MD. As with most things, this topic is not binary in "it works or it doesn't work". It depends a lot on what problem a company set out to solve for patients, how you use telehealth but also design the full care experience to solve those problems with high quality and great outcomes (which you can prove), how you change reimbursement for your services to make it economically valuable for all parties, and then also how you complement local clinicians and make their lives better and easier for the care they are built to deliver in person. I believe the models that will be durable and also good businesses (i.e. have a moat, generate margin, scale, attract the needed capital) create wins for all stakeholders and solve real problems that in-person care cannot and is not solving, particularly in a fee-for-service payment model. #virtualcare #valuebasedcare #digitalhealth

What do if you have TOO MANY patients —> Having more patient demand than availability is a good problem to have, but you need to handle waitlists strategically to capitalize on this interest and avoid losing those in waiting to someone that can get them in more quickly. Start by clearly explaining your waiting process and setting expectations upfront: How will they be notified when an appointment opens up? Email, text message, phone call? Are they able to get on a cancellation list for short notice openings? Is there an estimated timeframe or placement on the list they can expect? What steps do they need to take to accept an open appointment? (With OpenSpot they literally just reply “YES” to the text your practice sends them!) Transparency and frequent communication are key. Provide waitlist updates periodically to show you haven't forgotten them. Nurture leads in the meantime by: Sending relevant health tips, advice articles, or introductions to your team. Inviting them to follow your social media channels and subscribe to your newsletter. The goal is continuing to build the relationship, so they don't lose interest in your practice. When an opening finally occurs, they should be eager to book rather than already pursuing alternatives.
