    Content Delivery World

The vast majority of Internet traffic is HTTP-based and content delivery networks (CDNs) are used to ensure delivery of popular content to large audiences. Instead of relying on proprietary streaming protocols and leaving users at the mercy of the internet bandwidth gods, the streaming media industry has evolved to leverage the dominant HTTP protocol to deliver media in small file chunks while utilising the player application to monitor download speeds and request chunks of varying quality in response to changing network conditions.

The technology had a huge impact because it allowed streaming media to be distributed far and wide using CDNs (over standard HTTP) and cached for efficiency, while at the same time eliminating annoying buffering and connectivity issues for customers.

In this session, you’ll get hands-on with live demos and get more familiar with the technology as we walk through some common 360-degree live streaming workflows, including the Lollapalooza Berlin 2015 music festival that allowed virtual attendees to attend the live concert series and be immersed with the band on stage. Most VR technologies use industry-standard streaming protocols that can be implemented with common streaming servers and platforms. We’ll discuss a couple of examples, including GIROPTIC and VideoStitch Vahana VR, and also review how playback is achieved using common player apps.

    Broadcast Engineering Conference (BEC)

In today's world, video content distribution on the Internet supports an ever-changing variety of delivery architectures. When IP multicast was developed more than 20 years ago, it seemed to be the silver bullet for one-to-many or many-to-many content-distribution applications. However, relatively few commercial multicast applications are in use. On the other hand, the increasingly widespread use of peer-to-peer (P2P) unicast video technology such as Viblast, Peer5, StreamRoot, Hive Streaming, Octoshape, and many others reinforce the real-world benefits of fully distributed peer-to-peer video delivery. In this paper, we discuss the pros and cons of multicast video distribution, and see why P2P unicast video may mean the death of multicast.
